We are moving hous esoon and need some packing boxes. I've asked on Freecycle but so far no one has come back to me. Am trying to keep the cost of the move down so don't want to pay much for boxes. Has anyone got any other suggestions of where I can get some....thanks!

Who are you using to move you? Or are you doing it yourself? Shurgard and other storage places sell boxes and wrap.

Onlyaphase · 03/11/2008 16:10

Your removal company (if you are using one) will drop off boxes and packing materials for you if you ask.

Our local Waitrose used to leave a stack of boxes by the door for people to use for their shopping, we always used to nick them for other things too. Do any of your local supermarkets do that? They won't be massive (often they're wine boxes or similar size) but it all helps....

I got some from Asda when we moved. I'm sure Argos sell them too, in packs and flat packed.

misdee · 03/11/2008 16:19

i paid for ours. worked out at just under £1 a box.

when we moved i got all mine from dh's work. He works at a plumbing centre so always has millions of boxes. You could try somewhere like that and see if they'll save the boxes for you? They only throw them away

ikea

I asked at the supermarket - Tesco recycle theirs usually but if you ask then they'll keep some aside for you.

MrsTittleMouse · 03/11/2008 16:41

Quick hint - when you get your boxes make sure that your DH knows what they are and what they're for. It isn't very good for the budget if you buy overpriced flatpack cardboard boxes and your DH tears them up and puts them out with the recycling.

Dh went to Halfords. He got LOADS of great sized boxes, they had been for bicycles, for childrens car seats, etc. We also got some from Tesco and Sainsburys. But the Halford ones were top. He spoke to the manager, who said "come back around 7pm, then we have unpacked all the stock, I will keep them aside for you in the backyard". Great!

You can also try places such as dixons or pc world, he got some "oldfashioned" monitor boxes from them.

We also bought some from the great yellow storage company. Argos also sells packing boxes.

We got ours from ebay!!, then a few days before the move the removal company gave us some.

Wow! Thanks for all the replies! We are hoping to get a couple of blokes with a van so wasn't expecting much in the way of boxes from them. And trying not to pay. Some great avenues to try out there - thank you!

Ask on your local Freecycle, lots of people are happy to give them away after moving.
if you are in Norfolk I have soem goign spae...

Pannacotta · 03/11/2008 19:17

sorry just saw you asked on freecycle, worth askign again though, they come up quite often on my local group.

themoon666 · 03/11/2008 19:19

Best place of all is McDonalds. Strong sturdy boxes and as many as you can get in your car boot. All free.

Just go in and ask for who is in charge that day. Ask em if they have any spare boxes as you are moving and have heard they often throw boxes out.

I just then drove roudn the back and the bloke sent me about 30 boxes out, and said if i wanted anymore to come back any time.

chocolateshoes · 03/11/2008 20:09

thnaks! Would never have thought of McDo. Have drawn up a list of places to try tomorrow - I will succeed!! No, I'm a long way from Norwich Pannacotta - thanks anywya!

We just moved and bought boxes from http://www.mad4boxes.co.uk/mad4boxes and they did the job fine. Next day delivery n'all.

AnybodyHomeMcFly · 05/11/2008 21:56

Maybe too pricey tho -although you get quite a lot for yr money. I also got free wine boxes from majestic - good for small things
