What colour carpet do you have on your stairs and landing?

Having loads of building work done at the moment, and plan to replace carpet (only carpet in house except nursery) afterwards. Currently have bog standard pale beige one, but it has looked minging for years. Not sure if a darker colour is a good idea or not, as don't want to make area dark (will go right from ground floor to second floor room), so currently flitting between beige again, chocolate brown, or pale green.

What do you have, and how do you keep it looking clean/stain free (or don't you?!)?

Cream one.

Isn't too bad actually.

But no shoes worn in house, so that helps.

I am getting a seagrass-ish/hard wearing brown one. Had cream and it was wrecked in 2 years.

Cream, but with beigey/brown flecks. Plus a "shoes off at the door" policy reinforced to the children as key is inserted in lock every day! And it is shampooed monthly.

We went for a darker beige/light brown colour on the stairs and landing. It's been down for about 18 months and has no stains or marks on it (half of it is missing due to an insurance job but that's a different story).WE have a huge basket byt he front door and all shoes are put in it before comign in the house so that helps

I have a madly coloured striped one!! Mix of yellow, blue, terracota, brown, beige, green you name it

Sounds foul but is FAB - really bright, but harwearing and you can spill whatever as it is not boring dark and one colour

Just can't see us succeeding in a shoes off policy. Dh ignores any house rules that I try to set, as does dd largely.

We just got a new one fitted and it is darkish oatmeal. It should hopefully wear okay as we also don't wear shoes in teh house.

cream here. It's quite new, and quite light, so who knows what it'll look like months/years down the line.

I have chocolate brown, with cream walls. Looks lovely 2 years on and doesn't show any marks

We have a darkish red. Was here when we moved in and it is less offensive than it sounds. Tatty though.

Crunchie - my friend has a hall carpet that sounds exactly like yours. It looks great.

We've got a light green one. It was here when we moved in (through most of the house in fact) and I can't say I would have ever picked it but actually it's fab. It's very muted and seems to go with everything and the paint in the hall, stairs and landing is all white so it's the only colour and is nice.

As for keeping it looking stain free....

But it doesn't ever look really filthy.

They have this bargain one too at £13.99 but it's 100% wool so maybe not hard wearing?

Ours is a sort of Digestive biscuit colour.

I wanted neutral, not too light (as it would marks ) and not too dark . It has a texture to it (rather than your usual tufted? style) which helps disguise any minor marks, bits of fluff etc

It seems to have been the right choice.

Crunchie -I love the sound of yours! I saw a gorgeous striped runner but it wouldn't have worked very well on our stairs as they go round the corner half way up so the stripes would have gone a bit weird and not "flowed" IYSWIM.

Doesn't look too bad, as I never let people go upstairs in their shoes.

oooooo ours is dark blue with a domestos stain in it and due to be replaced - i want a stripey one now . Ours has to do a small landing as well hmmmmmmmm

Used to have lush plush deep red - this showed dust etc too surprisingly.

Moved and have lighter oatmeal with flecks...you can't see any marks on it yet.

If it's hall is full of light, I'd go for anything but as our hallway darker i went for lighter colour.

Ooh love that runner WW, but too many turns in our stairs to get a runner looking right.

Ours is beigey/grey colour. Think it is called limestone. I'll do a link later if I can recall the brand. Makes a very dark landing look much lighter.

Only had it a couple of months but haven't wrecked it yet. We're not a taking shoes off house.

The place we bought it from recommended steering clear of wool carpets with children. Much harder to remove stains, apparently.

Just realised that you can get those stripey ones as wider carpets, so don't have to have them as a runner. Loving your work WW - we might have a winner here. Now will just have to find a fitter and see if he reckons that we could get stripes to work with all of our angles .

Bloody hell MM - they nearly all have wool in! Did you get somewhere local to do it, and if so, who and were they good?!
