Can’t find blinds or curtains so cannot move in!

Hi everyone,

I am moving into a property which has, as I see it, very standard sized sash windows. Typically 150cm w with a 200cm drop.
My issue is that I cannot find curtains or blinds that are long enough anywhere and I have spent weeks walking around IKEA, Dunelm, looking at Debenhams, B&Q, traipsing around John Lewis and I’m at my wits end

I also want thermal curtains to keep the heat in, but not blackout blinds in every room! I had really hoped to move in in the next couple of days so that my son can get used to his new house before he goes back to Nursery but I simply cannot find any curtains or blinds. The made to measure prices per blind/curtain start at £200 per item and it’s just not in my budget . I actually think I’m about to cry over curtains!

anyone able to suggest a retailer I might have missed? Given how many people on this planet have blinds and curtains I surely can’t be the only one with this issue!

Get some stick up blinds and a travel blackout blind for ds for now, then you can spend more time looking for curtains you like.

KnickerlessParsons · Today 10:59

A) you can get curtains made to whatever size you want
B) you can surely move in without curtains?

Have you looked at online retailers such as blinds2go? There are several similar sites and you can input the measurements you need.

Besidemyselfwithworry · Today 11:01

Charity shops are FULL of curtains round here - even if they aren’t perfect you could get some cheap ones and then save up to replace them?

very long or very wide windows aren’t standard for readymade curtains but places like dunelm often have offers on made to measure options.

Mulledjuice · Today 11:01

have you measured again?

allthemind · Today 11:02

Everyone moves in and sorts this later?? As others have said, stuck up temporary blackout ones for now.

You can order made to any size curtains and blinds from loads of places including JL. I always get perfect fit blackout mesh bkinfs which are quick to deliver and clip on. You dont need curtains with those but if you still want some aesthetically then just get curtains at your leisure.

Why can’t you move in?? We stuck up bin bags on our DCs bedroom windows this summer while we were waiting for the blinds we ordered to be delivered.

There seem to be lots of thermal curtains on the Dunelm website that are 228cm drop, are you also looking for some very specific colour?

allthemind · Today 11:03

Yes Ive used blinds2go and blinds direct and similar.

Sewaccidentprone · Today 11:05

Lots of places sell longer curtains but only online.

for a 150cm wide window you’ll need quite wide curtains too for draping.

we got our 200cm long curtains from IKEA.

brighthorizonsahead · Today 11:05

Thank you for your suggestions, the dema to measure websites are so extremely expensive. That’s what I was trying to say, I’ve put in 150×200 and I seem to get £200+ per window .

This is my son’s window and strangely non of the curtains I have looked at have been long enough. 180/190 at the very most are the longest drop I’m finding

Just checked Dunelm website. They have a few hundred in the size you need. 🤔

PagingDrBeat · Today 11:06

Next have some ok curtains that will probably fit that size window. Standard longest drop is something like 229cm which is what you need for 2m, assuming you have 30cm room above the window frame

somanychristmaslights · Today 11:07

Dunelm have loads on their website. Not sure what the issue is??

Tortephant · Today 11:08

Dunelm, these drops are available ready made.

if they aren’t out it’s ok to ask, they carry stock that’s often in the store room

tealandteal · Today 11:08

You also dont have to buy them all at once, just get some for your room and your son’s room and you can do the rest of the house as you go. Nothing to stop you moving in

Sewaccidentprone · Today 11:09

ours Are 240cm drop, but the curtain pole sits well above the window. Which I think is 180cm high.

IVeryMuchDoNotThinkSo · Today 11:10

My drop is 220 and I've got curtains from next and dunelm.

PepsiBook · Today 11:11

I don't see how no curtains are available?
We very recently bought some for french doors, there's were tonnes of choice literally every shop we looked at.

Why does it stop you moving in? Put something up the window for tonight, cardboard/black bag. It's only temporary.

fancytoes · Today 11:13

Stick on travel black out blinds.

Charity shops.

Stick up a cheap basic curtain rod and stick a throw over it with some clips.

Thermal option: My handy MIL got a quilt/thick bedspread and made it into a single curtain for a door, cheaper than a big inter-lined curtain

Not sure if you were being hyperbolic for comic effect, but suggesting you can’t move in because you can’t find a curtain is a bit bonkers!

RandomMess · Today 11:14

Dunelm do plenty long enough, you will only need one curtain width wise, so one pair will do 2 windows.

70yrolddriver · Today 11:17

We lived with Amazon Blinds in a Box for a couple of years. Very sturdy, thick paper, you just stick them on. Easy to trim if too wide and they come with some plastic clips to keep them raised during the day.

NotMeNoNo · Today 11:19

Are you bothered that you cant find exactly 200cm long curtains? Buy the next size up and have them shortened. Or some inexpensive temporary ones so you can move in.

yonem · Today 11:20

Buy some floor length ones and cut them down? You can use iron on hemming tape if you don’t sew.

You can also just hang a sheet over the curtain rail until you get it sorted!
