Sorry in advance for the essay 🫣
I’m currently in a decent-sized house (practical layout) with its own driveway. The house itself is fine, but I’ve never really liked the location – it’s a fairly bleak, concrete cul-de-sac (claustrophobic) with little greenery or character.
After years on the swap list, I now have a potential swap to a beautiful period maisonette on a tree-lined street in a much more sought-after conservation area.
It’s considerably more spacious than my current house, with beautiful huge sash windows, very high ceilings, lots of natural light, its own front door and access to a private garden. It occupies the first and second floors but is arranged over four levels, which gives it a very unusual, house-like layout.
I’ve always loved period properties, and the location is somewhere I’d actually enjoy walking around and spending time in – it’s a quiet residential area but within walking distance of cafés, bars and restaurants.
There are trade-offs: higher rent and council tax that come with the area, potentially higher heating costs with a period property and high ceilings, and I’m also concerned about soundproofing, although there is no one above.
After trying to move for years and struggling to find somewhere that feels right, I feel this may be one of those opportunities that doesn’t come around again.
If I turn it down, I won’t continue searching – the whole process has been too exhausting.
Has anyone made a similar move from a house to a period maisonette for the sake of a better location and more character? Did you miss having a house, or did the better location make the trade-off worthwhile? What would you do?
