Neighbour painted our fence

pinkjessie · 31/08/2025 15:17

Our Neighbour has painted our fence on their side - which is absolutely fine but they have also done the posts on our side and its black! Looks awful from our side. Advice on what to do/say to them. We put the fence in before they moved in. (Looks worse in real life the contrast to the natural wood and black paint).

What do you want them to do to rectify it? That would form the basis of what you need to say to them.

Wildfairy · 31/08/2025 15:40

To be honest id probably paint your side, it doesn’t look great,

minipie · 31/08/2025 15:43

I actually don’t understand how they did that. Did they take the slats off on their side, paint the posts and then put their slats back?

Temporaryname158 · 31/08/2025 15:45

I don’t think it looks bad at all to be honest so just leave it or if you want to id paint your side to match

CaroleLandis · 31/08/2025 15:47

It doesn’t look awful.

Your side does need painting though.

Soontobe60 · 31/08/2025 15:49

How did they manage to paint the posts all the way down without getting even a splash of black paint on the back of the slats? TBH, that photo looks very odd.

ThejoyofNC · 31/08/2025 15:49

I mean, it's an improvement on the current green mould tbh.

SirChenjins · 31/08/2025 15:49

How did they get into the posts to do that?!

I think I would just paint your fence asap to protect the wood and blend it in.

2dogsandabudgie · 31/08/2025 15:55

Am I missing something here because all I can see is green paint.

Iwiicit · 31/08/2025 16:01

It looks fine to me. I absolutely couldn't get worked up about that. Life is way too short to waste your precious time getting worked up about such a non-issue.
Having a good relationship with your neighbours is worth its weight in gold.

MissMoneyFairy · 31/08/2025 16:08

How did they do it, there's a pabel at thd top, is there side all black now, I'd go round and take a look, is your side really that green or is it mouldy untreated wood.

Arthurnewyorkcity · 31/08/2025 16:11

Yikes. Your side looks horrendous. I get its your fence and they had no right to paint it without permission but your side really needs some tlc

rwalker · 31/08/2025 16:30

Is try and pressure wash it off if it was today

personally I think it look horrendous

It's not the point. I wasn't asking for opinions on what our side looks like. Its our fence. It's natural wood

Your natural wood fence has alge growing on it turning it that green colour. You need to treat it at lest or the wood will rot.

I think what they has done is fine and don't see an issue. It would have been nice to be asked first but at lest they are preserving the wood.

LibertyLily · 31/08/2025 17:07

I can't understand how they've done that either! However, sorry @pinkjessie but I agree that painting your side black too would look better.

We inherited unstained wood fencing/trellis that was starting to go green with algae when we bought our current cottage last year. I've painted it all black and it looks so much nicer - and more importantly for us (as it's a smallish courtyard compared to our previous 0.5 acre garden) it has given the impression of a larger space because the fence now disappears into the distance.

KnickerlessParsons · 31/08/2025 17:11

They’ve done you a favour by protecting the wood.
I know it’s not the answer you were looking for but you really should paint your side too.

are you sure they painted the posts and they weren’t always like that? It’s awfully neat.

longtompot · 31/08/2025 17:17

Tbh @pinkjessie the black just looks like shadow. But I would speak to them and say they need permission from you before painting your fence

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 31/08/2025 17:18

Well your side clearly needs doing so just paint over the bits on your side with whatever colour you choose 🤷

Not for much longer if you don't start to take care of it

It's Treated wood! 🙄

Ok so I don't think the picture was good. It's not neat. It's all splodged. We have a large garden, bordering on 5 other properties. All our fences are natural treated wood but now one side has odd splodged black posts. The black does not look better. And it shouldn't be visible on our side at all.

You could tell them it's your fence, you installed it back in x year and you have got no problem with them painting their side but you would like them to take the paint off on your side because you don't like how it looks.
