Neighbour painted our fence

Our Neighbour has painted our fence on their side - which is absolutely fine but they have also done the posts on our side and its black! Looks awful from our side. Advice on what to do/say to them. We put the fence in before they moved in. (Looks worse in real life the contrast to the natural wood and black paint).

Bloody hell they've painted that black paint on really neatly!!

ThatGlimmeringSea · 31/08/2025 17:37

Legally if you own the fence then they shouldn’t be painting it at all, even on the side facing them, without your permission.

You could tell them it's your fence, you installed it back in x year and you have got no problem with them painting their side but you would like them to take the paint off on your side because you don't like how it looks.

Thank you. First sensible answer I've had on here. Hoping they can just paint strip it off.

I would paint your side as it does look shabby. A coat of paint will help to weatherproof it as well as making it look better. I would also have a word with your neighbours and let them know that the fence belongs to you. Therefore they must ask your permission to paint their side of the fence in the future. That way you can come to a mutual agreement on the colour you want and share the expense.

We can't afford to paint our fence. Our garden is huge and we prefer shabby to black.

Painting the whole of pur garden fence is not an option here and if we were, black would look extreemly tacky

Using paint stripper with make it look even worse. Get them to repaint a colour of your choosing.

Your side needs something done to it and you can barely notice the black. But if your bothered go and chap on there door

minipie · 31/08/2025 18:11

Contrary to others I like the way your side looks OP, looks natural and blends in with greenery. Not sure if other posters are sponsored by Ronseal or what.

If they are difficult about removing the black then would it be an option for you to grow some climbers up the fence? Would look lovely IMO.

RobinEllacotStrike · 31/08/2025 18:17

How nice of them.
bet it looks lovely from their side.

Beautyfadesdumbisforever · 31/08/2025 18:20

I would be annoyed. Wooden fences are pressure treated and are just fine unpainted. A bit of algae won’t hurt it suits a more natural style of gardening.
If it’s a paint that’s on the surface they should be able to strip it off, a heat gun might do it, then a quick sand. Have a look at cooper green an old fashioned greenish translucent preservative that might help blend in the posts after they have been sanded.

I actually don’t understand how they did that. Did they take the slats off on their side, paint the posts and then put their slats back?

I agree with you, how did they do it.

When you say first sensible answer, do you mean someone said what you wanted to hear?

I'm impressed with their painting skills.

Is the fence totally on your land? If it on the boundary, ie half on yours half on theirs, be prepared that they may request you to move your fence off their land.

Me too! That took a very steady hand.

To be fair to your neighbours, they have done a really good job and probably hated the green algae look as it can brush off on clothes, pets etc.
They should have asked permission as legally it’s your fence but most people don’t, just for the sake of being amicable with them though just ask them to make good your side.

mrsm43s · 31/08/2025 18:52

Your algae coated fence looks awful and needs painting for protection or it will have rotted away in a couple of years.

When painting your side, paint over the visible posts etc in whichever colour you choose.

Not treating your fence is a false economy (and it looks awful!)

Flossflower · 31/08/2025 19:03

A pressure washer will get rid of the paint. They do not have the right to paint your fence.
A lot of people are saying that it looks like your side needs doing but I disagree.
Pressure treated wood does not need to be painted and I prefer the slightly faded look.

Nearly50omg · 31/08/2025 19:19

Jet wash it off

TeenLifeMum · 31/08/2025 19:23

It looks quite effective to me. I wouldn’t fall out with my neighbours over it tbh.

Shelly369 · 31/08/2025 19:24

I’m still struggling with how the neighbour managed to paint those inner posts so perfectly.

HelloHattie · 31/08/2025 19:24

You should consider treating your fence. It looks awful.

I agree, I like to see natural wood and it’s entirely up to the owner whether to paint it or not. I still want to meet the person who managed to paint those inner posts so perfectly.

CherryOakAsh · 31/08/2025 19:31

How annoying! If you own the fence then the neighbours have no business painting it or doing anything else to it. Slathering black paint all over it could be deemed criminal damage. You could ask them to restore the fence to how it was before they painted it - though I doubt it will be possible, unfortunately.

If they wanted a black fence they should have put up a fence of their own on their side of the boundary and painted their own fence black instead of yours!

pinkjessie · 31/08/2025 16:59

It's not the point. I wasn't asking for opinions on what our side looks like. Its our fence. It's natural wood

When you put up a boundary fence you have to accept that they can do what they want on their side, you surely don’t expect to have control over both sides just because you put it up, normally a boundary condition like a fence would be agreed by both sides before erecting

Not sure what you can do, but if you decide to paint, you could also paint over these edges

Ideally you would both agree on a colour that suits both of your tastes, you could try saying this to them but doubt if they will want to repaint so soon after just painting
