Help me update my bedroom with this grey bed!

I have this style divan bed and headboard: https://www.dreams.co.uk/dream-team-hatton-headboard/p/651-01788-configurable

But in this kind of grey:

https://www.wilko.com/en-uk/aspire-furniture-catherine-lansfield-soho-single-grey-saxon-twill-headboard/p/0637824?msclkid=d0e43440c74d1fb86ab353d674e37b5e&utmsource=bing&utmmmedium=cpc&utmcampaign=PMax%3A%20DSV%20-%20All%20DSV&utmmterm=2326085568810566&utm_content=Furniture&gclid=d0e43440c74d1fb86ab353d674e37b5e&gclsrc=3p.ds

We live in a new build, the furniture is white/light oak skandi style, carpets are warm grey, greige really. I am about to drop £1000 on a new bed frame in order to decorate the room with warmer neutrals, but I am feeling terribly wasteful when the bed is in excellent condition and I am just being a snob because the tide has turned on grey.

I don't want to be that person. Is there anything I can do in terms of the colour I paint the walls, the way I dress the bed, perhaps accessories like an accent chair that'll enable me to modernise the room (it needs decorating, only room we haven't painted) that doesn't require me to change the bed frame?

Get a staple gun snd recover the headboard with a different fabric.

peuisgkres · 26/01/2025 22:32

It's the divan base too, I really don't think I could do that to a good standard without it looking like a 2 year old did it. I won't even be painting the walls myself, I'm absolutely rubbish at anything like this (including having 'the vision'....hence why I have a grey bed in the first place!)

Do you need to have a padded headboard? If not, how about replacing it with something in rattan, some bolster pillows for sitting in bed, and a valance to cover the divan (I know lots of people loathe them, but I have no issue).

H&M usually have a few different valances; seen lots of rattan headboards on La Redoute.

if you liked the bed in the first place don’t ditch it now just because it’s not trendy anymore!

LivingLaVidaBabyShower · 26/01/2025 22:38

Headboard style is nice
I'd go white bed sheets with dusty rose and moss green type vibe blankets / comforters

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 26/01/2025 23:15

Do you actually like the colour ? You don't need to update your decor with every single fad that goes round .

I’d throw a bedspread over it. There are some beautiful velvet bedspreads that would cover it and then you can double up on pillows and cushions.

BarneyRonson · 27/01/2025 00:13

Paint the headboard with chalk paint. Check out Annie Sloane tutorials on how to paint fabric. Armchair successfully painted in my house, no flaking or cracking.

Moveoverdarlin · 27/01/2025 00:19

Painting headboards, re-upholstering it?? It really isn’t that bad. Whilst grey has fallen out of favour you could put any colour pattern or colour bedding on that bed and it would go with anything.

I think it’s pretty inoffensive. I’d stack it with pillows and cushions and you’d only end up seeing the top.

I’d just invest in good quality bed linen, throws, big cushions, bolster cushions etc.

Garlicnorth · 27/01/2025 02:59

Grey does go with everything, so pick a gigantic rug that appeals. Put it under the bed, extending beyond it. Paint your walls to match or tone with the rug or, if you picked a patterned one, match one of its shades. Add a couple of cushions to match, and bob's your uncle 🙂

Pictures from Dunelm. I used photos with grey sofas, these aren't particular recommendations (I like the multicoloured ones!)

change up the bedspread (as long as the spread has a hint of grey) it will coordinate. paint the walls white.
or a solid color bedspread in a contrasting color.
either way there is no need to change the headboard.

Bluelagoondrmr · 27/01/2025 03:38

Does the headboard attach with slots - if so you can just buy a new headboard in a style you like. Buy a box valence for the base - you can still access any drawers and it gives a much softer look. Job done. www.dunelm.com/product/non-iron-plain-dye-ivory-fitted-valance-1000089385

I think it’s very easy to incorporate grey in a warm neutrals bedroom. Just make sure your undertones are warm. A lot will depend on your personal style.

Is it more scandi neutral, or neutral transitional with pops of colour, or something else.

Please don't ditch the bed just because it's not in vogue anymore. You need to dress the bed with layers- use warm undertones. You can put a bench or stools at the foot of the bed that are made of natural materials to bring in more warmth. Grey is a neutral colour, so easy to pair with other colours. Pick a couple of colours and repeat them in bedding, artwork etc. You can also consider having a rug underneath (even if you have a carpeted room) or just a runner if budget doesn't allow for a rug. I would also style the bedside tables with lamps, photos, vase etc. Hope you find some inspirations in the attached photos.

Thanks everyone, I'm veering towards keeping now. I def think the key will be in the bedding and curtains.

I was originally thinking something like elephant's breath on the walls.

Our bedside tables are similar to these but the drawer fronts are white: https://homedone.co.uk/bedroom/curved-oak-ish-bedside-table-oak-ish-finish.html?gadsource=1&gbraid=0AAAAADcUmKeYc847tDvrBusnaQ1NKEBNW&gclid=CjwKCAiA-ty8BhAAEiwAkyoa338Ru4j6jNRiqIq6wEYG7s60XipadkEghLkTZpy1efvCGD-fUXR53RoC70wQAvDBwE

I like the last image in those images.

This is very close to the grey of our bed and those walls are quite a warm neutral so I suppose that's the look we are going for.

OP it's really easy to re-upholster a bed - I've done mine several times and a friends divan which was much easier than my bedframe! But if you are not confident then using bed linen, throws and cushions will disguise the grey and save wasting a perfectly good bed / headboard. Have fun with it - don't try to replicate something you've seen on Instagram, make it your own beautiful / elegant / cheerful (or whatever you want) space.

Clarinet1 · 27/01/2025 12:17

I think if you add some bright things like a bedspread, cushions, an accent chair in jewel tones like teal, emerald, shocking pink or perhaps one two outrageous prints (parrots? big flowers?) or maybe something a bit ethnic, you will find the grey becomes an acceptable background.

Edited for typo!

Snippit · 27/01/2025 12:33

Gentle Fawn by Dulux is a beautiful warming colour, and seems to go with everything. As someone else has mentioned, introduce a large throw, introduce a rug, cushions on the bed, change or upholster lamp shades.

SereneCapybara · 27/01/2025 12:37

I love the main image that @FlourSugarButter posted, because it shows how you can make that gunmetal grey work with warm beiges and neutrals - especially with a tartan or check or patterned rug that incorporates both colours. That's really clever and stops the grey from looking cold or dated.

peuisgkres · 27/01/2025 12:51

@SereneCapybara yes I think that's exactly what I needed to see, currently have the bed (and rest of room) dressed in a very c2018 kind of way so was struggling to see how I could bring it up to date keeping the grey.

I think my approach is going to be lots of textures on the bed, natural coloured bedspread and throw with white waffle bedding, some natural coloured curtains (currently white) and warmer neutral walls (also currently white) Will try different samples.

May well introduce a colour with some accessories too, but will see the natural with the grey first.

I think I may well spend that whole £1000 on all the accessories mind 😂

This is DD’s (20) bedroom, recently painted cream. Bed and wardrobe are mid grey, 5 years old. She’s still buying accessories, but you can just about see the pinks and blues that she’s adding. Good luck - I have a grey sofa and want to add neutrals in the lounge, so this thread has been very useful!

@peuisgkres you can also buy slip covers for the headboard and base, also called headboard ’wraps’, with base covers to match. Might be worth a look. Come in faux suede, chenille etc.
