I have this style divan bed and headboard: https://www.dreams.co.uk/dream-team-hatton-headboard/p/651-01788-configurable

But in this kind of grey:

We live in a new build, the furniture is white/light oak skandi style, carpets are warm grey, greige really. I am about to drop £1000 on a new bed frame in order to decorate the room with warmer neutrals, but I am feeling terribly wasteful when the bed is in excellent condition and I am just being a snob because the tide has turned on grey.

I don't want to be that person. Is there anything I can do in terms of the colour I paint the walls, the way I dress the bed, perhaps accessories like an accent chair that'll enable me to modernise the room (it needs decorating, only room we haven't painted) that doesn't require me to change the bed frame?

I agree about adding a rug under the bed, even with the carpet. It creates a much warmer look and adds some interest, particularly if your carpet is grey too as it would separate the bed and carpet.

@Overtheatlantic I just idly clicked that link thinking I hate bedspreads, and now I have desperate bedspread envy and am trying to justify buying it even though it will mean repainting. Well, it needed doing, honest…

Just have a loose cover made for the headboard and base (eg Etsy or local place) or buy a valance like this which is thick so the colour underneath won’t show through.

Elephant’s breath is grey. I have a lot of grey with Greige and I love it

You are making me quite paranoid. Joking!! But I still see plenty of greys in the white company and got my bed from there and bedding. I have designers guild manipur oyster cushions and they are silver but have been a staple fashion item for twenty years. Also my walls are farrow and ball setting plaster. I think the contrast with the grey is really nice but now I’m wondering 😂 I do feel like this is why we live in a throw away society though replacing things that don’t need to be.

One last thing and I’ll shut up. One room. I decorated all cream and white. Cream bed. Nordic white lamps. Cream carpet. Odd bit off brown throws. But I slept in it the other week. And it just felt soulless. No character or warmth.

@CareerChange24 lol. I've been convinced to keep my bed, I agree about throwaway society, I'm not going to cover it either. I think it's the way my room is currently presented that is making it look dated, plus, as my room is just white currently the headboard is the focal point. I think once I get the room decorated, it'll blend.

You can buy divan wraps, I got one from Etsy.

Our divan was a cheap looking purple colour but I found a lovely velvet blue wrap, looks really good. If you did opt for something like that you could probably get the seller to make a matching cover for the headboard that slips over the top.

My in laws have their whole house painted light grey. Their sofas and accessories are warm beige, and furniture bare wood. It all goes really well together and totally balances out the grey and feels so warm and cosy. I think grey done right can be lovely.

Trends come and go. If you like something, do it

Tide has turned on the all-grey-no-colour look but grey remains an excellent neutral and backdrop for cosier and more colourful bed spread/cushions/curtains etc. Bring in some pattern and texture and it won’t feel at all like the monochrome look that’s now out.

I wouldn’t personally recommend elephants breath. I have it in my living room and it doesn’t look great in electric light (lovely in daylight) and it’s hard to match with colours - I don’t think it would go with that headboard (noting it’s all subjective and if you love it don’t let me hold you back!) I like Ammonite from the farrow and ball collection and some of the creamy whites (yellow undertones) could add a warm backdrop to whatever you choose for bed etc. A really lovely lamp shade , maybe in a more country style could change the vibe of the room, too. Good luck!

Can the headboard not be removed? I got a lovely antique brass headboard on facebook marketplace for £10, makes my room feeling lovely and homely.

Yes we bought one of those stretchy wraps for my DD’s grey padded headboard. It works really well. Then the rest of the bed has an oversized duvet on it which covers the divan base. You can see a tiny bit of the divan base near the bedside cabinets but cover is sage green and it blends in fine.
