I can't find my thermostat

Any suggestions of hidden places for thermostats? It's a 2 bed terrace, hardly a mansion. I've been here over 2 years but didn't really need to use the heating 'properly'.. just flicked it on and off when I wanted. Now I've got a baby to keep warm/not overheat and I can't find a thermostat anywhere to set a temperature!

Look for it instead of being on Mumsnet when you have a young baby to keep warm.

It can be anywhere

Usually downstairs

FFS. Does it make you feel better responding like this?

Wow

KnickerlessParsons · 21/11/2024 22:52

Ours is in our dining room.
I think they are usually in the coldest part of the house eg hallway if you have one.

user1471530109 · 21/11/2024 22:52

You very likely don't have one! I've owned in 4 houses in my life. Only 1 had a thromostat. I just turn mine on or off. I control temp of radiators on boiler and at their valves.

Loub55 · 21/11/2024 23:03

We never had one in our previous 2 bedroom house. Just set the timer on the boiler and the radiators had thermostatic valves

haggisaggis · 21/11/2024 23:22

We didn’t have one in our last house. Each radiator had individual thermostat valves and the main heating controller was used just to set times the heating came on and off. Same in DD’s student flat and my late mother’s house.

dementedpixie · 21/11/2024 23:27

Not every house has a thermostat. Mine is a dial one on the wall in the downstairs hallway

Noooooogsh · 21/11/2024 23:31

We thought we didn’t have one when we moved in and assumed the boiler was a bit rubbish, turned out it was a wireless thermostat. Hidden at the bottom of a bag of various manuals and warranty booklets left by the previous owner. Any chance there’s a random place someone has put it for safe keeping?

mitogoshigg · 21/11/2024 23:33

Mine is in the hallway, but I've had them on the boiler, in the living room and in the under stairs cupboard in the past

MemorableTrenchcoat · 21/11/2024 23:34

You may not have one. They give you a lot more control, so worth having, even if the radiators have TRVs. A smart thermostat is the way to go nowadays, and fairly easy to fit.

Tupster · 21/11/2024 23:37

Do you have a timer? My thermostat and timer are in the same wireless device. Have you seen a white plastic digital device anywhere?

Invisimamma · 22/11/2024 00:08

You probably don't have one if you can't find it.

Look into a Hive they are a good cost-effective solution.

Really unnecessary comment, she has said she has looked for it. Mumsnet can be a really helpful place for advice with stuff like this.

Carrotdonut · 22/11/2024 00:17

There might not be one installed. Or as I found out when I moved in my current home, the previous CF owners actually took the thermostat, leaving a very obvious set of drill holes in the the hallway. You can easily buy a generic remote thermostat and have it installed.

unsync · 22/11/2024 00:21

You may have radiator thermostats if it's a fairly new system. They allow you to set the temperature in each room, in combination with the boiler being on a timer. Pic to show you what they look like. They'll be at one end of the radiator.

HotCrossBunplease · 22/11/2024 00:24

Can you take a picture of the main control box? People may be able to tell you if it is one that is normally paired with a remote wireless thermostat.

I've lived in my '50's home since end of last century... we don't have one.
The times I've been accused of either lying or being extremely short sighted or stupid were many....
As per other posters, I've either put it on timer (that was the old boiler, I've since upgraded... but now I control it via each of the radiator valves at the base of the radiator.....
Must be nice to know you arnt alone in the "hunt the thermostat" game 🤣

Copperoliverbear · 22/11/2024 00:30

I have thermostats on each radiator no wall dial. ( like the above picture )

Anoisagusaris · 22/11/2024 00:33

Don’t have one, nor do we have them on radiators. House/heating system is 20 years old.

Yikes. The building regulations in force at that time required at least TRVs on the radiators. I would at least consider fitting a wall thermostat, they’re not expensive.

DiscoBeat · 22/11/2024 00:54

Ours is a wireless one so it's possible the previous owners had one too and lost it or took it by mistake? You could try contacting the energy company to send another one. Hope you get it sorted.

Don't be a dick.

Growlybear83 · 22/11/2024 09:14

My mum had a wireless thermostat, which was fine when she first got it, but once she developed dementia, it was one of the things she hid in a daily basis, and I usually found it in her handbag 😆. It was a small box, about 3" square, so it would be easy to overlook if the previous owners had tucked it away in a drawer.

Chemenger · 22/11/2024 09:18

Our old house didn’t have one, just thermostatic valves on the radiators.
