Looking for a lovely place to live in Sussex. Not coastal

We’re looking to move to a village or town in East or West Sussex. Ideally north of the south downs. So not coastal. Somewhere with a convenience shoos, coffee shops, pubs etc and on a bus route. Any suggestions please? Ideally within 45 drive to Haywards Heath thank you

The obvious answer would be either the villages near Haywards Heath or Horsham and surrounds (the latter def fits
what you say, but can be pricey).

What kind of budget etc are you looking at, and what is important to you? (Horsham has great schools, decent transport links, a variety of housing etc, but is a busy market town with good facilities and a lovely community).

Uckfield is quite nice. I don't live in Sussex but have visited a lot and Uckfield was our nearest town. There's supermarkets and a station and an Arthouse cinema with a good restaurant. And other stuff but that's what we used most.

Cuckfield
Ardingly
Turners Hill
Balcombe
Bolney

There are loads of villages in that area.

mumma24 · 28/06/2024 16:37

Thank you @Flubadubba max budget is £650,000 for a 3 bed. Our kids are adults now so good school areas not needed, lovely walks would be nice, not too far from good shops

Great thank you @heldinadream

Lindfield is the obvious one but may be a bit too close to Haywards Heath.

Horsfed Keynes?

mumma24 · 28/06/2024 16:39

Thank you @tattychicken will check out those villages

I second Lindfield and Horsted Keynes. However you get more for your money if you are some distance from the London to Brighton line as all the London commuters live near that line and it drives prices up.

DrNo007 · 28/06/2024 16:46

Lindfield and Horsted Keynes are near Haywards Heath station so popular with commuters.

mumma24 · 28/06/2024 16:54

@DrNo007 thankyou, will check those out but may be over our budget for what we what. We won’t need to commute to London

I know Sussex well, that is quite a low budget sadly for a lot of Sussex’ villages. Why not coastal? Seaford, would be 45mins from HH, better value for money.

TheDogsMother · 28/06/2024 17:09

How about Petworth or Midhurst ?

Waitingfordoggo · 28/06/2024 17:12

Hassocks? Large village/small town, a handful of pubs, small supermarket, can walk on to the Downs from Hassocks. Short journey to HH and to Brighton either by train or road (advise to never drive into Brighton though!) Haven’t looked at the property prices in Hassocks lately, though I would think you could get something decent on that budget

Blingismything · 28/06/2024 18:26

Midhurst is good

XVGN · 28/06/2024 20:30

Storrington. Does it still have a Waitrose?

Saschka · 28/06/2024 20:39

Ringmer? Lewes? Both well within 45 mins drive, and lots of stuff in your price range.

Otherwise Newick, Burgess Hill (there are some nice bits), Hurstpierpoint, Hassocks?

Petrine · 28/06/2024 20:42

Yes it does still have a Waitrose @XVGN

NotARealWookiie · 28/06/2024 20:47

Lewes?

tattychicken · 28/06/2024 20:49

Petworth and Midhurst are lovely but over 45 mins from Haywards Heath.

Nightblindness · 28/06/2024 20:53

Henfield exactly meets your criteria though I understand it has grown a lot over the last 20 years. Lovely community, much missed.

mac111 · 28/06/2024 21:18

As a previous poster said Uckfield and surrounding villages are nice - Uckfield has all the basics, pool, cinema, choice of supermarkets and it's roughly equidistant from Tunbridge Wells, Eastbourne and Brighton for more choice. You'd likely get a lovely house with your budget.

SeanMean · 28/06/2024 21:31

@Petrine are you a Stoz local?

So am I.😄

Koolsgang · 28/06/2024 21:34

I was going to say Lewes too but I know it’s on the expensive side.

mumma24 · 29/06/2024 06:01

Thank you @Putting
