Looking for a lovely place to live in Sussex. Not coastal

We’re looking to move to a village or town in East or West Sussex. Ideally north of the south downs. So not coastal. Somewhere with a convenience shoos, coffee shops, pubs etc and on a bus route. Any suggestions please? Ideally within 45 drive to Haywards Heath thank you

Look around the a24 / a283 / a29 area. Petworth, Storrington, Pulborough, Billingshurst, Steyning are bigger towns / villages with GP surgeries, supermarkets etc. Ashington / Washington / wisborough green are smaller villages with fewer amenities and higher house prices as fewer housing estate type developments. All are within good walking distance of good countryside, lots of vineyards!

@rainbowstardrops prefer the countryside to the coast and it would be nearer to Gatwick and family members that live in Surrey/Sussex borders

You have been given a lot of suggestions already. Please would you review those and let us know which you have already checked out, what you liked, what you didn't like, etc. That'll encourage a few more appropriate suggestions. Give us your top 3 list so far.

I think someone else mentioned Henfield, and I second it. Loads of great footpaths for walking (Downs link runs through the village), many local pubs, cafes and shops, small museum, nice highstreet, nearby farmshops. On a bus line that goes between Horsham-Brighton and I think another that goes west/east. Worth a visit, gives nice feeling with lovely flower baskets up and down the highstreet etc.

@ApricotStarling thanks sounds perfect for us

Hi there, how did your research go? Any updates?

mumma24 · 15/03/2025 16:00

@BarneyRonson we’ve decided to focus more on East Sussex as our daughter has just moved to Kent/sussex borders.
mayfield, rotherfield, fletching, Burwash, buxted, Wadhurst, Ticehurst, Framfield areas not moved yet liked to be near one of the large towns, uckfield, heathfield or crowborough, Tunbridge wells. We‘re also considering Cranbrook over in Kent

Have you looked at Tenterden? I haven't been there but it was always on our list of potentials before we moved to Devon. It'd be nice to hear what that is like.

mumma24 · 15/03/2025 18:26

@BarneyRonson yes lots recently as my daughter has only just moved to a village south of tenterden called wittersham. We love tenterden. Lovely high street of shops and really pretty, great pubs, a steam railway and much miore. Let me know if you want to know more

I’m in a similar position and had ear marked Henfield. Anyone thinking of putting their house on the market?!!

cardboardvillage · 16/03/2025 21:00

Wadhurst?

MissTS · 06/07/2025 16:46

Does anyone live in or near Hazelmere, Fernhurst or Fittleworth? They’re obviously all different with various pros and cons. (Hazelmere and Fernhurst have more amenities and trasport links but Fittleworth is peaceful and quiet with a good sense of community. Looking in all areas and would love to hear pros/cons from anyone who lives there. Family friendly is a plus but not essential.
