Declaring household members?

PIL's sold their house last year with the intention to travel the world. They moved around a little but have since realised that they don't have a fraction of the money that travelling requires and are now homeless and in a word, skint. They've moved in with us (that's a whole thread in itself) however are not contributing to any bills. What do I need to update to reflect they live here from a legal point of view? MIL keeps rambling about being added to 'poll tax' but online it says she only needs to appear on there if she's a joint owner or partner. Can anyone give me a starting point please before I go and travel the world to avoid them!

Oh bless you! You know there’s not even close to being enough social housing for people who have no home currently and have been waiting years. They stand a snowball in hell’s chance of getting anything.

OP is your MiL wanting to have a utility bill as proof of address I wonder?

Social housing availability varies, general needs being more in demand than age restricted properties. My suggestion was made before I read the OP’s PIL were under 60.

This is just one housing association with an open application system for older people: www.sanctuary.co.uk/find-home/rent-home#available-properties-39921457

@Fivemoreminutespeaceplease

Could they sign up with house sitting agencies? They get to go all over and stay in some lovely places? My friends parents do this they're retired and feed pets and walk dogs etc but go to some really nice places at the same time and get paid for it!

Yes OP. When I sold my house but my new house wasn’t ready, I stayed with BF and it was a nightmare to prove my identity for the move without something with my name and current temporary address on. BF put me on the water bill in the end (joint is fine!) just to get things moving. So you may have to bite that particular bullet I’m afraid.

they might also have to change the address on their driving licence too, just to have that extra ID / proof of address.

good luck getting them out op. I have bitter bitter experience that is very similar to this. It isn’t easy, even if they seem willing (my particular “guest” wasn’t!)

@Seymour5 yes availability varies. But you’d be very very hard pressed to find a council or HA that will house two people of working age, who have made themselves intentionally homeless, and who have savings in the bank. And I for one would be cross if they did. This is NOT what social housing is for.
