Larder cupboards? Can you recommend one please?

doing our kitchen and I really would like a freestanding pantry larder cupboard. Has anyone had one they recommended and LOVE please. I’ve looked at some that are fabulous open, but when closed just look like a a wardrobe and underwhelming. I would like it to stand alone on a wall as a feature. Still looking around at kitchen so would consider a build in one too that looks great. Thank you!

I've seen a couple in one of my recent home magazines either Ideal Home, Real Homes or Living etc. I'll have a mooch later as I remember thinking they looked gorgeous.
Do you have a budget?

Shamelessly place-marking 😊

BlueMongoose · 18/10/2022 13:45

Not what you're after, but may be worth considering for some- we were replastering, and while we were at it, built a pantry, just studding and a doorframe, which the plasterer plastered in. Not very deep, as you don't gain a lot of shelving with a deeper one, and barely more than 3' wide. It looks good to me, part of the room, and as it is floor-to-ceiling has masses of shelving (we put extra studding in where we'd need to screw in shelf supports).

Blue is thought about that but don’t really have the room. My mil has a proper pantry like that and I’m very jealous!
I’ve seen them in Cotswold company for 1k ish and they are lovely but do look a bit like a wardrobe.

I'm putting in stand alone larder cupboards from this company:

They arrive in early November. I'll update with info on quality etc.

Custardpudding · 19/10/2022 12:17

Odfox they look nice! Lots of choice there! I’m going to have a good look later. In be really grateful if you post back what you think. I’ve been looking on Instagram at larder cupboards and everyone who posts a pic of theirs says they love it. I have a spare wall in my kitchen ( currently being worked) and would love a nice feature larder cupboard. I’ve waited years for a new kitchen so just want it looking special.

We've got a Cotswold Co. one that I adore, so much storage. They don't do the one we have any more but it is very similar to this:

www.cotswoldco.com/dining-room-furniture/pantry-cupboards/double-larders/westcote-cream-double-larder/

It is big but very useful, we have a very small kitchen so this is great for extra storage.

On a practical note, for people reading your thread but wanting something different, we repurposed a fridge freezer unit.

Removed the fridge freezer, put a microwave on the shelf and fitted wire basket drawers all through. Tall one at the top for cereals. Very shallow one I the middle for spices. One the exact height of two stacked tins of eg. Baked beans.

I don't know how I lived without it. It's basically all my food storage now. Obviously it just looks like any other kitchen cupboard, but it's so very practical.

Whiskeypowers · 19/10/2022 13:15

Do you want a pantry or a larder?
they’re not the same thing necessarily if you want to store temperature dependant items in them!
if it’s just tins and the like then location isn’t an issue

Any chance you could pop a photo on here? I’m planning to relocate my new fridge/freezer so will have a space where my old one used to be. My intention is to install a pantry unit for all my food which is currently in several smaller cupboards. I’ve been spending hours online to get ideas for layout etc as the location next to the back door is not ideal so I’d love to see what you have done.

picklemewalnuts · 19/10/2022 14:04

Will do. It's scruffy but efficient! And cheap!

It could be much tidier, but the rest of the family use it! Grin

It's tough when you haven't got the room. Even our first little one-and-a-half bedroomed house (1980s) had a pantry. Our last house (1960s) had a great pantry under the stairs, with an actual window (wish I still had one like that) & a shelf made from a paving stone- we kept our booze under that and it stayed cold all year round!
It's a pain when houses are built without pantries- lots of things are not the right shape/size to fit in cupboards. Flour sacks, and hoovers, for two examples.
I hope you find something that works for you.

Custardpudding · 20/10/2022 11:04

pickle that’s just great!
I have two corner cupboards at mo and spend my life on my hands and knees with a head torch looking into the back of it. Nightmare! They have to go. I’d like the larder cupboard ( like a wardrobe ) to fill the wall as a feature and put baking stuff in. Flour etc

I would love a larder unit of the type you mean, but will always build in one like mine in future.

I hope for an 'appliance garage' as well. A unit with all the electrical things kept plugged in, pulled forward to use, then pushed back again, with doors of some kind.

Thanks, that’s brilliant, exactly what I want! I’d not considered putting my microwave in a unit but rally like that idea. I’d need to buy a new one though as mine is quite big and old.

picklemewalnuts · 21/10/2022 17:19

Bought the drawers online and fitted them. Bargain basement job!

tunnocksreturns2019 · 21/10/2022 19:39

My wonderful late DH made me one in a space where the previous owner had a fridge freezer

Yes I have too many sprinkles and yes I deal with difficult emotions via lining things up 🤣

ScaredSceptic · 21/10/2022 19:54

@tunnocksreturns2019 that is fabulous!!! Your DH must have been a very talented man.

ProperVexed · 21/10/2022 19:56

@tunnocksreturns2019 That pantry is a thing of joy. What a clever man!

paisley256 · 21/10/2022 20:02

@picklemewalnuts omg you've just changed my whole life with those wire shelves! 😍

picklemewalnuts · 21/10/2022 20:06

They are the bees knees, Paisley! Took some careful work with a measuring tape, mind- we aren't experienced DIYers!

Tunnocks that's a thing of beauty!

PickAChew · 21/10/2022 20:07

I have one of these, but the taller version, bought when they manufactured for indigo (and I paid about 2k for it, 4 years ago and was agog when I saw the current price!)

www.peakfurniture.co.uk/product-page/the-oak-parlour-cupboard

It's vast and beautiful and, yes it does look like a wardrobe because it's made using a wardrobe carcase 😂
