@BlueMooMoo, in our case they first knocked through the loft and first floor walls, then ground floor. That was about 4-6 weeks into the build (first had to demolish various other parts, dig and pour new foundations and add new supporting beams).

20 skipfuls of rubble later, it’s beginning to take shape.
Wow! So are you doing a loft conversion as well?

Yellownotblue · 02/04/2022 00:06

No, the loft was already converted - we’ve demolished an attached garage and are building a three storey extension (ground, first floor and loft level).

At the moment pigeons are roosting in our old bedroom :D I’m fine with that as long as it’s not bats! The side wall is completely gone.

Back to our favourite topic, what did you all chose for bathroom tiles? Did you stick to one type per bathroom or go for a combination?

Ive gone for a herringbone teal colour in the shower and a bricked off white tile for the bath and sink.

I don't want it too tiley so currently working out exactly where they should go. Up to the ceiling or just to the top of the shower? Sink isn't near the bath so can do different heights for these areas but still figuring out if that will look ok.

GardensandGrandDesigns · 04/04/2022 07:14

When we did our bathroom 3 years ago we had a textured tile feature wall above the bath and then plain tiles on all the other walls. Then dark floor tiles. I'll try and post the pic I got inspiration from.

Perfect, it sounds like I’m on the right lines. For one bathroom I’m thinking of terrazzo floor and behind shower with off-white tiles elsewhere; for another I am also thinking teal behind the shower and another neutral colour.
I am finding the range of choice exhausting!

LivingInaBuildingSite · 04/04/2022 20:27

For the loft (kids) bathroom I went for the large panels, can’t remember the official name for them.

So big panels in the shower cubicle, adding the bath corner and an upstand behind the sink.

In our main bathroom I choose a Lappatto tile from somewhere, was it Tile Giant? It’s a dark greyish that can go on floor and walls. Around the wet room shower corner, all the floor, a short upstand instead of skirting, and up the wall to the ceiling behind the heated towel rail.

Haven’t really decided for downstairs loo. Hoping to match the hallway karndean into the loo for the floor. Will have to think of what’s happening with the walls.

LivingInaBuildingSite · 04/04/2022 20:30

This shows the lappato tile, it’s sort of anti slip.

Oooh, we are have very similar textured tiles put inside our shower. Do you recommend them? Still happy with them? Thank you xx
GardensandGrandDesigns · 05/04/2022 07:13

Yes still looks good. Do you live in a hard water area? As that does make tiles near the shower fade. It has happened to ours but I still like the effect.

nomoneytree · 05/04/2022 16:42

@GardensandGrandDesigns I have those tiles in my bathroom now!!

Thank you! We’re having a water softening system put in. Fingers crossed it works as our water is really hard.

I love these tiles, have loved them for years! Ours are a lighter colour but otherwise essentially the same wavy texture.

nomoneytree · 06/04/2022 16:17

Arrrgghhh drains problem. Apparently our main drain is too deep. At least an extra £4K.

GardensandGrandDesigns · 06/04/2022 18:12

Oh no ☹️☹️☹️

NewHouseNewMe · 06/04/2022 19:02

The tile idea and photo are amazing, thanks for all the advice!

@nomoneytree - oh no! What do you need to do to the main drain?

My builder said today that mine was the most complex he’s done. I almost felt sorry for him! I guess it explains all the money..

GardensandGrandDesigns · 06/04/2022 20:25

We paid for our kitchen, utility and entrance hall furniture from DIY kitchens today. Delivery is 25th July for bespoke so glad we've put our order in. I've ordered 2 single oven housing units which I did for symmetry. I'm not sure if it is better but frankly I'm pleased that by ordering it's final and I can stop worrying if I've designed it well enough!

JoanDarc · 07/04/2022 13:46

Joining after lurking for so long, our extension starting in next couple of days after a year of planning. We’re extending a detached house out from an existing single storey side lean by a couple of metres, so only adding 19 sq m downstairs with upstairs covering the new/ existing extension so this will be around 35 sq m. I’m feeling slightly sick, totally disorganised and terrified for the lack of control we’ll have over our lives for the next 3/4 months.
We’re lucky our builder is a good friend who has done remodelling work in the past for us. Thought I would be much more excited but fear is definitely the overriding emotion. I’m also overwhelmed with the amount of decisions we need to make, thought I would enjoy choosing interiors ie, kitchen, quartz, tiles, flooring etc but it just feels all too much. Hoping for reassurance that this is not unusual!

Yellownotblue · 07/04/2022 16:44

@JoanDarc, welcome aboard and your feelings are definitely not unusual! I’m also feeling overwhelmed by the decision making. It is literally hundreds of decisions that you need to make, often with a domino effect.

Meanwhile, our project has been hit by sanctions against Russia Angry

Our timber flooring is stuck in Russia and the supplier is on the brink of collapse. We’ve already paid a 50% deposit which they can’t refund. We’re now urgently trying to amend our order so we use whatever flooring they’ve got in their U.K. warehouse, which is not subject to sanctions. Goodbye lovely herringbone floor. I’m not happy...

So there you go - even when you’ve made finely tuned decisions, they can all get turned upside down very quickly!

Yellownotblue · 07/04/2022 16:53

To be clear, I’m not begrudging sanctions per se!

GardensandGrandDesigns · 07/04/2022 18:26

I understand, that's got to be so frustrating. Hope you get your flooring sorted out soon.

Newhome321 · 07/04/2022 20:52

Can I join.
We are 5 weeks into our project: loft conversion, bedrooms, bathroom and living 1 renovation plus porch build. We are living in and it has been overwhelming this week. My friend has been kindly offered us a place to stay this week then a week away next. It is extremely expensive renting out in our area(sw London) so we have to bite our bullet.
Everyday, there is only slow progress make. The loft delay is due to the staircase which will take another 4 weeks. The other rooms were just started(removing chimneys, carpets, ceilings etc.). Another 3 months more to go by minimum. Awggg!

Elmrosie · 09/04/2022 14:57

We're still waiting to get started. We are awaiting the architect's drawings, but we've now trying to figure out what we need to do about complying with CDM 2015 and in particular appointing a Principal Designer. The architect doesn't offer this service as standard. What have other people done?

GardensandGrandDesigns · 09/04/2022 15:59

What is CDM 2015? Never heard of it.
