I agree! I'm so sick of budgeting on rewiring, heating, piling just all the non glamorous things you don't see!

MissFritton65 · 16/02/2022 22:06

@GardensandGrandDesigns totally but my 8 steels are apparently gorgeous!🤣🤣

GardensandGrandDesigns · 16/02/2022 22:08

8! Wow!!!

NewHouseNewMe · 16/02/2022 22:17

@GardensandGrandDesigns I empathise as we are going through similar. Due to a planning mistake, we have to add more steel after starting and unforeseen costs are mounting. It’s pretty stressful.

@MissFritton65 I may have asked this before but what is the length and width of your island? I’m trying to envisage my kitchen and can’t do it at all.

MissFritton65 · 16/02/2022 22:20

@NewHouseNewMe it's 3m by 1.6m

NewHouseNewMe · 16/02/2022 23:41

Very useful - that’s almost mine to a tee. Now I can visualise it!

Sewfrickinamazeballs · 17/02/2022 18:51

Our first steel went in today, 8 more to go! They have also knocked through all the old extension so now I can see the space and it's huge!

I think we are going to have to admit defeat in a month and move out whilst they rip out and refurb the existing house. Due to our shocking wiring, we are losing electricity to chunks of the house we are living in already. Looks like it will be about £3-4000 to rent somewhere for 6-8 weeks. Ouch. And this is only if I can find an air bnb happy to have a cat.

We are also having to adjust our weekend plans a bit so one of us is here overnight as we just have two bits of ply nailed over doors keeping us secure.

Hoping everyone stays safe in this crazy weather.

whataboutbob · 17/02/2022 20:25

@d1157959543599b000178 I just realised I put the wrong link for the flooring in my kitchen . It’s vinyl from www.colourflooring.co.uk/

PoshWatchShitShoes · 17/02/2022 21:53

Just popping in the say hi 👋 Hope everyone's well.

We moved back in a week ago and it's amazing. It's all worth the pain and stress!!! Still haven't unpacked everything and haven't got around to setting up any tvs, but I'm currently lying on my kitchen snug sofa and loving the view 🥰 I love the floor, the backsplash, the island, the pendants, the bar stools. Happy happy 👏

Our builders are actually still here doing final snagging and repairing all of the issues caused by the shit plumber. The youngest labourer got a boob flash when he walked straight into my bathroom this morning without knocking. Bet he won't be doing that again 🤦🏼‍♀️😆

whataboutbob · 17/02/2022 22:21

Good to see you back on here @PoshWatchShitShoes I’m guessing the leak and flooring are sorted now? Great to hear it’s all come good and you’re loving the end result. Pics please!
Had my own flooring scare ( likely asbestos floor tiles a d council wanted me to remove them [after] the kitchen was all fitted but all good now.

BlueMooMoo · 18/02/2022 18:23

Hopefully signing up! We started plans in April 2017 and are finally finally hoping our build will actually start in March.
(Is this the longest prephase ever? Might be Grin)
We are in Surrey and are hoping to come in under 300k for a relatively small part double storey and part single storey extension including some internal remodelling. We've already had to reduce scope to not include garage conversion and other remodelling and fit out. Why yes, our original budget was 180k. We booked our builders back in Christmas 2019.
Let's hope this time sticks and I can participate in the thread.

GardensandGrandDesigns · 19/02/2022 08:02

Happy Saturday everyone!
We finally have our long awaited building reg drawings. I swiftly sent them on to the builder as they mean absolutely nothing to me! Lines everywhere, feel totally out of my depth looking at them.

Question though... A couple of our suppliers (glazing and kitchen) are having price rises at the end of the month. If the builder checks through what I'm ordering, would you order now? Seems a bit early before we have broken ground but we have the money and it will hold the price. We can set whatever delivery time we like. Thanks!

sluj · 19/02/2022 09:06

@GardensandGrandDesigns, yes definitely do that if it will save money and you know what you want. However I would recommend using a credit card for that and other large purchases just in case they go bust in the meantime or there are other problems. The credit card gives you extra consumer protection. My window supplier in Herts went bust the week before fitting 😒 Read the reviews too as it turns out my one has done this several times before and just kept changing the company name on the front of the very impressive showroom.
Still, all well that ends well and I am planning a happy weekend painting skirting boards now 😀

RinklyRomaine · 19/02/2022 09:16

I would. Plenty of delays in supply too. Still waiting on my blasted French doors although the rest of the glass is in. They are about to refit the roof light as despite being fitted to manufacturer specs, it has had a massive puddle sitting on it all week and needs to be slightly slanted.

Kitchen arriving today! Plan is to fit from Monday which is exciting. Or would be if we hadn't all come down with hideous colds.

RinklyRomaine · 19/02/2022 09:16

I name changed, I forgot to say. Similar L based name before 😂

GardensandGrandDesigns · 19/02/2022 09:23

Thank you both! We've paid off our 2 credit cards to get financially healthy before the extension so time to load them up again! Very excited about these purchases 😁

NewHouseNewMe · 19/02/2022 09:23

@sluj is the dodgy window company linked to one with initials in the St Albans area? We are literally placing an order today (on credit card).
@RinklyRomaine give me another clue as I can’t work it out! I’m shocking at cryptic crosswords too.

whataboutbob · 19/02/2022 10:33

@sluj closing your business down every five years is the classic strategy of businesses that want to avoid any accountability. Sadly you can only sue the business, not the business owner. Found out the hard way.

RinklyRomaine · 19/02/2022 10:39

@NewHouseNewMe I was a flaccid salad item with a faintly Victorian variation before.

Sounds like you are pretty local to us there. @sluj I worked in local media round there for many years and the double glazing companies which did this were legendary. The few who stuck around for years were always expensive but marvellous. Fireplace companies too.

GardensandGrandDesigns · 19/02/2022 11:10

Please don't be HBD St Albans!!!!

NewHouseNewMe · 19/02/2022 11:24

We need @sluj back quickly to clarify @GardensandGrandDesigns Grin

@RinklyRomaine got it now!! Thankfully as I was doubting my own intelligence there for a moment. Nice name change.

It seems a few of us are around the same area then!

@BlueMooMoo welcome and good luck with the build. My initial and final estimates were similar to yours but are going up fast. Does it include windows and kitchens, both of which I think have jumped?

GardensandGrandDesigns · 19/02/2022 11:26

I'm now frantically googling @NewHouseNewMe

It includes 11 white upvc windows and 10k allowance for kitchen. We are awaiting a final requote before they start officially (we have had holes for foundations dug to ensure we didn't overrun our planning permission). @newhouse how many sqm are you extending by?
notangelinajolie · 19/02/2022 13:46

@PoshWatchShitShoes

Love your utility, especially sink which is the sink of my dreams.

Please could I ask what colour you have painted the walls and cupboards in your utility? Is it a different colour to your kitchen or is it the light making it look darker?

The colour I want is in my head but I'm struggling to find it in real life Confused Smile

sluj · 19/02/2022 14:19

Sorry I have been out ordering the dining table. The company we bought from was called Element Windows, Pindar Rd, Hoddesdon, formerly Chase Windows and formerly other things before that. I hope no one is tied up with them. They literally went bust the week before fitting and apart from a message on THEIR answerphone, we never heard from them. Fortunately they had already fitted the sliders and we has not paid for the other windows or lantern roof so we didnt end up out of pocket just delayed by several months. We had no guarantee for the sliders but the second glazer added them to his guarantee for us.
Hope no one is involved with them. It's a chap called Gary who is the company owner.
