If you moved away from Hackney, where did you go?

Currently live in Victoria Park (ish) and looking to move. Have no idea where, and need to start thinking about it! Wfh means we can go anywhere. (Could be another part of London, could be elsewhere.)

So thought I’d ask others who were once in the same situation as us where they went!

I live in Enfield and we seem to get a lot of migrants from Hackney here, mostly young couples with growing families. You can buy a house with a garden for the money you'd get for a flat in Hackney, and yet we're on a direct train line from Stoke Newington & Hackney Downs into Enfield Town (about 25 mins).

I’ve heard people moving there! Must go and properly look!

It depends why you want to move.

For a bigger house? To cut living costs/reduce mortgage? For a different atmosphere?

For more space. We do love the community, but not enough to sacrifice the space! Also a greener, safer place might be nice.

We just have no idea where to go!

From Hackney to Devon. Hated that, so back to London but this time to a leafier borough in the south east. I still miss Hackney a bit, or perhaps what I actually miss is the association I have with the place of being carefree and child-free and having loads of friends and a social life!

I could never live outside of London now.

Schooly · 20/08/2021 13:17

Yes I’ve been in Hackney young and child-free and now very much not! Grin

Curious to know which borough in SE London? Do you like it?

I loved in & around Hackney for over a decade before coming south of the river and despite initial reservations I love it here now. SE19 is nice, SE27 area and West Dulwich are great.

MojoMoon · 20/08/2021 13:53

Walthamstow appears to be the classic choice for Hackneyites moving from flat to house.
Wanstead for more suburban feel and close to big open space on the flats.

Norwich? Small city, more for your money but still some things to do and easier access to rural areas. Also York and Cambridge would be on same category. I know you can WFH but a small city would provide for more local job opportunities should your work situation change in the future. Don't want to be stuck somewhere with few jobs if your companies fold/get made redundant etc.

I moved from Victoria park to sw1 Smile next move will be out of London within the next year. Well that's the plan.

wiltonism · 20/08/2021 14:00

Clapham, then Frome in Somerset like some kind of hipster cliche.

Lottapianos · 20/08/2021 14:03

We moved from Victoria Park to a flat in Stratford. Don't do this! If it's green and spacious and safe you want, Stratford is not it. Stayed there for 6 years, and like you, wanted green and space and a house rather than a flat. We're now in Havering and it's lovely. Quiet neighborhood, close to country walks and lots of green, but also 10 mins walk to a tube station or 10 mins bus to overground station and 30 mins to zone 1. Best of both worlds. We still visit Victoria Park often! We have no kids so no idea about that side of things

Moved from renting in Bethnal Green to buying in Leytonstone, getting more space as our family grew from 1 to 2 children.

We love it here, lots of space with Wanstead Flats and Hollow Ponds up into Epping Forest. Still very easy to cycle to the Olympic park, Hackney Wick or into Victoria Park.

CaramelWaferAndTea · 20/08/2021 14:07

Live in Leytonstone. Most people here seem to have moved from Hackney when they were having/had kids...

Usernamenotavailabletryanother · 20/08/2021 14:09

Moved from the Bonner gate side of Victoria Park to Leytonstone. Everyone here is from Hackney 😂

It was actually a huge culture shock despite being only 4 stops away- it’s more peaceful and suburban, feels less ‘London’ despite being in zone 3. But we live next to Wanstead flats which is just incredible, wouldn’t move back. The community here is brilliant too, friendliest place I’ve ever lived.

Usernamenotavailabletryanother · 20/08/2021 14:10

Arf at the Leytonstone cross posts 😂

We moved from Victoria Park to a very lively commuter village in Surrey with lots of pubs, cafes and community stuff going on. I massively miss the diversity and culture in London but it has been a safe and happy place to raise a family. But Victoria Park is one of my favourite places on the planet and if DH would agree to move back to London now DC are grown (he won't) I'd offer you a house swap in an instant. I love the East end so much.

Another family member moved from Hackney to the coast of Scotland and has never regretted it.

chipsarnie · 20/08/2021 16:25

Leytonstone. It's becoming a bit of a cliché. I'm amazed there's anyone left in E9 given the numbers of Hackneyites that have moved here in the last few years. Literally 60% of our street's Whatsapp group moved here from Hackney.

MoChridhe · 20/08/2021 16:31

Recently bought place on my street in Upminster have come from hackney.

itsalldope · 20/08/2021 16:43

Walthamstow is choc-full of Hackney immigrants.

Yazoop · 20/08/2021 18:09

I went to Walthamstow and then several years' later a couple of miles further to North Chingford. I'm definitely not the only one with a similar trajectory (see also: Woodford, Wanstead, Highams Park - all full of Hackney migrants)... But it is all good :) Feels like best of both worlds: more space and more chilled and more green but only 15 mins on the overground to Hackney and about half hour to central London.

LauraChant · 20/08/2021 18:12

We moved from Hackney to Colchester. Seems quite a well trodden path.

JustcameoutGC · 20/08/2021 18:22

We ended up in Hitchin. 3 ex hackneyers in our small street. Can get back to lower Clapton in about an hour.

ChubbyCat · 20/08/2021 20:20

Camden to Bristol. Still miss Camden but didn't want to live in a flat forever. Bristol is good, and have a house now.

bronzeheat · 20/08/2021 21:12

We moved from Kingsland Road to Highgate. It's green and safe, although not many families moved here from Hackney. We mainly chose it for the schools - DD got a place at one of the private schools which goes to 18, so we'll be staying for another 16 years at least!
