If you moved away from Hackney, where did you go?

Currently live in Victoria Park (ish) and looking to move. Have no idea where, and need to start thinking about it! Wfh means we can go anywhere. (Could be another part of London, could be elsewhere.)

So thought I’d ask others who were once in the same situation as us where they went!

Born and bred in Hackney. Moved from Dalston to Catford in the 90s because I couldn't afford to buy in Hackney. Then moved to Bromley.
When I was at school people moved from Hackney to Walthamstow, ( before it had a "village"), to Leytonstone, and then maybe eventually Essex. Never, ever South of the River! 🤣

Loving reading these! Some common spots then!

Walthamstow has always had a "village". I went to the village festivals in the earlier 90's, and I lived there at the end of the 90's. Walthamstow has been gentrified and the village is at the eye of that particular store, but it's always been there.

Moved to Folkestone with my son from Hackney. Do still miss Hackney so much but right thing financially. Soon after I moved my polling card got forwarded from Hackney, stuck to it was the polling card of someone who moved from near my old address to Margate! I wanted to send them a postcard and wish them luck!

Born and raised in Cassland Road. Parents moved to a new town in the mid 60s, then to Benfleet. When I moved out I went up north, then abroad and now in the south west. I have very fond memories of Hackney but I could never live there now, couldn't afford to even if I wanted to.

We moved from Hackney to Higham's Park. Lots of us here I think! Love the green space, miss the choice of coffee/food - there are good places, but not as many of them, and not all right on your doorstep. We're finding the lack of a car much more annoying than we did in Hackney. But don't regret it at all.

It depends on what you want and if for family moves etc. Relatives who moved out of Hackney over lockdowns now living in Bath outskirts but the wife has got a job in Bath, their daughter got into a good first school there. They did want to move to SE London but can’t sell their warehouse converted flat overlooking Vicky Park for what they want so are renting it out. Brother moved back to near Hackney village this summer and they’re thinking to move to Brockley but that’s because family are in SE London and good commutes for them (Clerkenwell/central London). Before they were looking potentially Epping, maybe nicer East London eg Leyton etc or Walthamstow.

Gonnagetgoing · 23/08/2021 14:07

That’s right near where my brother lives literally on that road!

I know an ex colleague who lives in one of the terraced houses on that road near Wells Street and opp the posh square. I’m torn because I like the area but not sure I’d want teens growing up there.

Gonnagetgoing · 23/08/2021 14:11

I know Walthamstow as house shared there and then DB’s wife managed the gallery there. Not that impressed to be honest. The high street is rubbish (near the equally rubbish bus garage) and it has pockets which are nice but I’m not sold on it. Nice pubs, shops, Village lovely but not lovely some other parts.

We moved from Hackney to Romford as train links are very good - there is a fast train which gets you to Stratford in 8 mins
So far we are confident we made the right decision, lots of green spaces and our road is very quiet which makes a nice change from Hackney plus still easy enough to get back via car or train as we do like visiting victoria park / broadway market on a weekend

FolkSongSweet · 23/08/2021 15:08

Our friends from Hackney have moved to Bath, Leytonstone, Forest Gate and Bristol so far.

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 23/08/2021 15:17

I was never Hackney but three good friends were. One's gone to Stoke Newington, one to Hove and one to the West End of Glasgow.

SisterAgatha · 23/08/2021 15:22

I’m from Enfield but I wouldn’t pick it in your position. I’d pick Catford/Hither Green/Beckenham area.

I am second gen ex Hackney - my parents picked Enfield, so did DPs parents. But DP’s aunts picked Catford and I feel like they got the better deal. Similar but different. His cousin goes out in Greenwich a lot and it’s so lovely.

You are so much closer to everything south way, and house prices are similar.

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 24/08/2021 09:27

Victoria Park to the north Kent coast.

Ds is now returning to the motherland...university at Mile End Grin

AllAroundTheWorldYeah · 24/08/2021 09:43

Also a greener, safer place might be nice.

Victoria Park is greener and safer than most of London so you might struggle to find somewhere unless you're willing to move out of the city.

Jasmine11 · 24/08/2021 20:14

Hackney to Kingston then Ham.

earsup · 25/08/2021 00:42

Born in victoria park road....mum paid £2000 for 6 bed town house off the glc council...!!...still in the family...a lot of the later trendy type neighbours all later moved to walthamstow, leytonstone and leyton...aunt is sitting on house worth about 2m now....but happy so wont move...other relatives cashed in...bought for pennies in the 60's and 70's and sold for over 1m and went to norfolk and spain....happy spending..!!

silentpool · 25/08/2021 01:52

A lot seem to move to Walthamstow and then move again when it's time to start school - so I would factor that in. Walthamstow had some good points such as the Village and easy access to the City and West End but it was gritty and had a good number of social issues.
