Shoe storage in hallway

At the moment we have a smallish table with 2 wicker baskets in our hallway that we use for storing lightweight shoes, hats, scarves etc and have lamp, flowers on top. Next to that we have a hideously ugly 2 layer metal shoe storage rack. Most of the time my 2 teenage boys and husband simply leave their size 11 shoes on the floor and the shoe rack empty, meaning the entrance to the hall is carnage!!! I may as well get rid of the ugly shoe rack but what do you all have for hallway shoe storage for about 12 pairs of enormous shoes. Inspiration please. I've Googled for hours but would like real life inspiration Smile

We have this. Built by a company on Etsy. They make lots of different sizes and you can pick either one of their colours or any F&B.
I love it.

Yours looks fab, @Mindymomo - can I ask where it's from?

BakeOffRewatch · 19/06/2021 22:01

What’s your budget?

I’d get a “three drawer storage bench”.

PigletJohn · 19/06/2021 23:08

A kitchen unit intended as wine rack cupboard. It is divided into pigeon-holes. It happened to be left over and is a dark wood finish which looks reasonable. They are widely available.

you can put a pair of shoes in one hole if they are flat/soft/not huge. Others need one hole per shoe.

If I was building one, I think I would go for a sort of hall bench you can sit on to change your shoes, with a rack underneath. Also seen in school changing rooms.

And a pirates chest to throw all the shoes in that have not been put away.

There is a particular design of shoe cabinet I saw in a furnituremakers; it looks like a chest of drawers, but each "drawer front" pivots forward and down rather than pulling out and has two tapered shelves inside. When I went back to the works thinking to buy one, they had discontinued it, but it's a known design you sometimes see, and can be quite elegantly made. I've seen them on ebay but you would want to inspect the materials and build quality.

How it works.

note it can be quite narrow for a hall. This one has only one shelf per "drawer"

Love yours @stooped - can you remember which Etsy store you got it from, please?

Mindymomo · 20/06/2021 08:15

@Umbra. We got it from the Cotswold Company. It was pricey at £425 but I’ve waited a long time to find it. It comes made up, you just put the shelves where you want. It’s very sturdy and finally does the job. There is 4 adults in my house, so we all have a shelf each and the bottom one has junk like umbrellas, hats, gloves and scarves. It was saying out of stock, but I checked regularly until it was back in stock.

We're getting this for our new house, currently we have a small cabinet with a box in for hats etc but it's not big enough for DH's giant shoes.

Herecomethedaffodils · 20/06/2021 13:34

So we have ordered this. Sooo excited as it is actually in stock and I have a delivery date of next week. It is pricey but having had their furniture before, we found it to be solid and exceptionally well constructed. We also figured that in the future, it is a flexible enough piece of furniture that we could move it to a different room (when we have fewer pairs of huge shoes to accommodate). Thanks for all your suggestions, there's some really good ideas. I really like the bench seat idea with storage (especially with baskets as I prefer not to see all the shoes!!!) and maybe could have one like this when the kids have fled the nest and we're old enough to need to sit down to get shoes on and off!! Thanks all 😊

@stooped thank you Smile

I have an old set of shelves with enough space for five pairs of shoes. I have a coat hook with enough hooks for five coats. There are five of us.

I spend my life carrying shoes upstairs to be stored in the kids wardrobes and when dh fucks with the system with multiple pairs of shoes, they get sling in the garage, which annoys him but not enough to stop doing it Angry

Blueboys2009 · 20/06/2021 23:00

we have an old toy box that's been stained/varnished - a bit like this: www.argos.co.uk/product/4876584?clickSR=slp:term:wooden%20toy%20box:1:157:1
But whilst it's great at keeping the shoes off the floor/out of the way, it's just a chaotic free-for-all inside the box!
