King size or super king??

So we're moving to a bigger house later in the year and I'm trying to plan out some of the rooms. Our current house is pretty small and so we just have a standard double size bed in our master bedroom to allow for other furniture too.

I've been so excited at finally having the space to have a lovely big bed that I just assumed we'd get a super king bed, but now that I look at the dimensions and the space I'm wondering if a kingsize might be a better size for the room, and maybe a king is big enough? We're both average size if that makes a difference, or a little on the taller side.

What do most people have? Is a king size big enough? I'm so used to my double which feels small that I want to get it right!

Oh and kingsize pillows are wonderful with the square 65x65 pillows for SK beds

pickledcrumpet · 24/02/2021 11:42

Just looked up measurements UK super king (180x 200) roughly equivalent to Australian king (183x203cm). We upgraded from queen (153cm x 203) to king and it is amazing. Particularly on hot nights as you don't have to touch. Making the bed is more tricky but mostly because our mattress is super deep. Definitely get a bigger duvet if you can. I also noticed bedding is more expensive.

friendlycat · 24/02/2021 11:53

If you don't quite have the space for a Super King there is a European King size - bigger than King and not as big as Super King.
But you end up with special order on the bed and the mattress. Bottom sheet is also special order, then put kingside pillows on. Super King duvet goes on the top. I've got this option as super king was just going to be slightly too big for the room as there is a kink in the wall etc that uses up space.

I noticed a terrific difference going from a regular double to this option. But I would have had the SK if space allowed. But then I would have put an Emperor Duvet on the top.

I’ve just ordered a super king and I’m trembling in excitement for it to arrive.

I’ve never been interested in spending money on nice cars or holidays, but I’ve ALWAYS wanted a massive bed!

foulmouthflora1 · 24/02/2021 12:06

Get the biggest and best your budget and space allow. We have an Emperor which is wider than a Super King. You spend so much time in bed, why not do it in luxury? When we moved I measured the new main bedroom to make sure the bed would fit comfortably. DH thought I was mad when he suggested we could always get a smaller bed and I shot him daggers!

ivfbeenbusy · 24/02/2021 12:09

Super king but you'll need to remortgage every time you need new sheets and duvet covers! 🤣

wintertime6 · 24/02/2021 12:12

Oh there's definitely a lot of love on here for a super king! The room is big enough for it I think. The wall behind the head of the bed is a bit smaller than the width of the room because there's a walk in wardrobe behind that wall, between the main bedroom area and the door, so I just need to measure again to check that it would look ok against that wall. Might need to have narrower bedside tables, but that's ok because I'm hoping to have wall mounted bedside lights so won't need space for lamps on the bedside tables.

You've convinced me that super king is the way to go, as long as it's going to look ok in the room.

I sleep alone in a super king. It’s amazing 🤩

I aspire to an emperor. Slept on one at a hotel and had to be forklifted out by a couple of strapping lads when it was time to check out...

We went from a king to a super king last year, I wouldn't ever go back. That extra bit of space is amazing. Especially when the kids invade the bed in the morning. Plus DH is 6f3 and 18st so we need the space Grin

TheABC · 24/02/2021 13:25

Heck yes, Super king all the way. I have woken up before to find both kids snuggled up next to us and I can still fit comfortably on the bed.

Plus if you have a tall DH, it gives you more room for sexual manoeuvres. Wink

Skinnytailedsquirrel · 24/02/2021 13:40

Superking if you have room. We have one with two separate mattresses (which can zip together but we don't bother). His is firmer than mine and it makes turning the mattresses (and getting them in/out of the room/house) so much easier.

Choccyp1g · 24/02/2021 13:44

King or Superking, but DOUBLE DUVET EACH.

bouncydog · 24/02/2021 13:50

We got Superking in 1983 and have never had a smaller bed apart from ocasionally on holiday and it's awful!! You get used to your space. We have a zip and link (easier if it needs to be moved) and mattresses to suit our weights! I definately would not recommend one single superking mattress as they are very heavy and awkward to move.

foulmouthflora1 · 24/02/2021 13:52

Another plug for zip and link.

All this talk of two duvets is a REVELATION! How have I not known about this before now?

YippieKayakOtherBuckets · 24/02/2021 14:53

Another vote in favour of super king zip and link. I love our super king bed and wouldn't go back but getting the mattress in was a traumatic experience.

On the subject of duvets, I have sewn three buttons to the top edge of the duvet, one at each corner and one in the middle, and then sewn little loops of elastic to the corresponding points on the internal top seam of the duvet cover. Wash and dry the cover inside-out, then attach the elastic to the buttons and it holds the top edge in place as you shimmy the cover down. It works a treat!

SJaneS49 · 24/02/2021 15:14

Both DH & I have had bouts of insomnia in the last couple of years - super king if your room will take it all the way!

Hallyup5 · 24/02/2021 15:19

We've got a king size. The only difference between that and the superking is the width, not the length, so it wouldn't make a blind bit of difference to us as my husband is always on my side, regardless.

If you want a big bed, there's a company called Get Laid Beds that make a 9x7 foot bed 😯

Bluntness100 · 24/02/2021 15:21

Super king here also, you could drive a truck between my husband and I at night, which is fabulous as he’s a pita sleeper.😃

Loopyloututu2 · 24/02/2021 15:23

I absolutely love my upholstered super king - it’s so comfy and spacious HOWEVER it’s a nightmare changing the bedding so bear that in mind. I have to do two loads - quilt cover first, then bottom sheet and pillowcases and I do the mattress protector every two weeks - it gets all tangled in the tumble dryer and takes ages to get properly dry. I feel like I’ve done a workout when it’s all back on!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 24/02/2021 15:34

Super king is much more comfortable for 2 people - but a zip and link would make turning the mattress/es much easier (similar to having 2 single duvets on the bed).

wintertime6 · 24/02/2021 16:00

I've looked at the plans again and the wall behind the head of the bed is 3 metres so I think it should be fine for a super king and 2 bedside tables. Ooh I am so excited! Will definitely look into the 2 separate mattresses, that seems like a idea.

kizkiz · 24/02/2021 16:10

We have a super king, but I'm 6'7" so still have to sleep at an angle and with toes hanging out. I aspire to an emperor or bigger Grin

friendlycat · 24/02/2021 16:48

Do also measure the actual bed frame size as these are often bigger than the actual mattress size that slots into it. Otherwise a bed frame that the mattress sits on top with no surrounding frame.

PickAChew · 24/02/2021 16:54

King size. Double feels so cramped in comparison. If we had space for a super king, I'd want separate duvets because I find super king too heavy to lay under and difficult to get covers on and off.
