How many times have you moved house?

DH and I are early 40s and have owned 3 properties. We started off with a small two bed flat, then moved to a small house, and currently in a 3 bed cottage. Perfectly adequate for our family, though we're toying with the idea of making one last 'move up' to a 4 bed place. Then I guess once the kids grow up and move out, it'll be downsizing for just DH and me!! Which set me wondering... how many house moves have you made so far... and how many more do you envisage? At what point is it still 'worth' moving up - ie if your kids are in the 10-14 bracket as ours are, would you move again or stay put on the grounds that it's not a million years before they'll be off to uni/moving out etc? And also.... when do you start thinking about downsizing? While the kids are at college? Or settled into marriage and jobs? I'm now wishing my life away, honest! I'm just curious.

Three times with DH. Now in "family home". May move again, but don't want to for the foreseeable. Love my house.

crunchie · 28/10/2007 19:20

I had a flat in London which I bought just after meeting DH, we sold it and moved to a village near colchester and bought a 4 bed cottage.

DH and I have decided if we never move again we will be rich!!

SpookyDooooo · 28/10/2007 19:23

4 times with dp but we don't own our own house, once on the ladder or have a house we will be more settled i am sure.

Hideehi · 28/10/2007 19:24

From a 3 bed semi which I bought on one income as a single parent, those were the days, to a 3 bed town house to a 4 bed bungalow in a worse area.
I don't know what we're doing wrong but we aint going up the ladder really.

LadyTophamHatt · 28/10/2007 19:25

7 times myself.

soon to be 4 times with dh.

WideWebWitch · 28/10/2007 19:25

Gosh

rented in Bristol
rented in London
bought in London, sold, which financed being a sahm
rented in Devon (2 places)
rented in Bristol (1 place)
now renting in SE and intend buying next year
so we will be buying the biggest place we can afford on the basis that we can always have an au pair/lodger and that might be useful one day
but mainly once we buy we will stay there for a long long time. We won't buy unless it's our dream house and we will intend staying there and leaving it to the children (assuming it doesn't need to be sold to pay for our care)

Hideehi · 28/10/2007 19:27

Sorry, all about me me me !
In terms of our next move it will be in 5 years time.
I will want the kids upstairs instead of the huge garden we have with the bungalow.
Not sure weather we will sell this one though as I'd like to keep hold of it for when the kids leave home and it's jusr DH and I again, although having said that I wish I'd kept the town house for the same reasons.

tomme · 28/10/2007 19:27

5 times in 8 years with DH, 4 of those we owned.

4)moving to our owned 1st 2 bed flat.
5)moving to 3 bed terrace house
6)Moving here, 3 bed semi.

7)Should be exchanging this week- 5 bed house.

MissInvisible · 28/10/2007 19:30

5 houses in nine years, im 30 now.

first house 2 bed semi new build clsoe to were we grew up

second 3 bed semi (1930's bay fronted)nicer area, still local, bigger houses

third house back to first area in 3 bed semi new build as was made redundant while on mat leave and down sized as we panicked!

fourth house 3 bed semi new build in fantastic area (just turned out to be too remote adn schools so good they had no space for dd until she was older)

fifth and final(this) house, 3 bed semi(1930's)back to second area, local for EVERYTHING but lovely area, huge house, near friends, dd school.and want to stay here..the ONLY probelm we have is parking and the fact our neighbours are numbnuts who walk around with their eyes closed when parking right in front on our house!..but i squeeze in and give them the fright of their life knowing i havent been apssed my test long

ScaryScienceT · 28/10/2007 19:31

We have 6 marriage homes. We are in our current house for the long run - the only reason to move would be if the company moved us.

MissInvisible · 28/10/2007 19:32

god i thought we were bad, although we HAVE owned all of these?

Yorky · 28/10/2007 19:32

Wow, I'd moved once before I left home at 18.
Now married to the forces and DS will have lived in 3 houses before his first birthday!
My parents upsized when we were 15,13,11 and still live there and we come home or they have friends to stay often enough that it would be inconvenient to be somewhere small.

eandh · 28/10/2007 19:33

actully moved twice

1)lived in my mum and dads house till I was 19 (they have only ever lived in the same house!!)

2)bought 3 bed victorian terrace with dh (the bf) in 1999

3)sold and bought 3 bed house in 2001 and
we're still here with no plans to move I love my house0

When I met DH I had a 1 bed flat and he had a 3 bed terrace, both in similar Zone 2-ish areas of London. We then moved in together, into a 2 bed flat in a very central Zone 1 area. Then we had our son and moved into a 3 bed terrace. Then last month we moved into a 4 bed house, which we feel we will be in for the duration now, really. We are planning to extend the downstairs at some point next year, and will probably convert the loft to give us 2 more bedrooms at some point in the next 5 yrs, too (we like space!). The only reason we'd move again is for a different area, not for more space, as the house is a fab size with great potential for expansion. We like the area loads, but now we have made the move to the the leafy suburbs (argh! we were such city slickers!) we keep saying 'hmmm...maybe the country would be nice)...

smurfgirl · 28/10/2007 19:45

As a couple we have lived in 3 houses and we lived together in halls of residence where we met. We rented with other students until we bought our first house last year.

I have moved 8 times in my life, I am 23.

Our next move will hopefully be to a 'family' house.

dd666 · 28/10/2007 19:47

5 times whilst living at home, 6 times since living with dp (we rent good job really)
so when my sisters move im first in there cause iv done it so many times i can scrub new house in day! lol

LIZS · 28/10/2007 19:51

We're on our 3rd owned property . Together we have lived in 6 , 4 in last 6 years ! Current one is family sized house , well located for the kids' current school but ds will leave in 4 years time and dd in 7 so may reappraise then.

NomDeBroomstick · 28/10/2007 19:57

I am 25. I have moved 16 times in my life.

I have owned 4 houses since I was 18, 3 with DH. (now in my 4th).

We live in a large house with scope for extension etc in a good location, there's plenty of space for us as a family (with potential to extend the family without having to squash in or move). Our next move may well be something similarly sized but in the country (DH thinks he'd like it in the country, I disagree - I've lived there, he hasn't).

We may well downsize when all our kids have flown the nest, but that is long way off

BitTiredNow · 28/10/2007 20:05

22 times all together. (If you let the forces wives onto this it will be one massive 2 sh*ts) I am a pad's brat (army slang for the child of a member of the forces) and also married to someone in the Army - since we have been married we are on our 7th house in 9 years - have moved house twice with day old babies - the movers help a lot then!

Hekate · 28/10/2007 20:09

3 times before dh and a further 5 times together. DH moved 9 times (incl an international) before we met. so that's 17 times between us.

We're experts!

Lilymaid · 28/10/2007 20:09

We moved around a bit before marrying and in early years, but am glad in some ways that we have managed 10 years in current house so that DSs have been able to get through secondary schools without moving. Now looking towards downsizing from the 4 bed estate house to something bijou when DS2 is off at university. If we don't downsize then, they may come back to live with us later ...
