How many times have you moved house?

DH and I are early 40s and have owned 3 properties. We started off with a small two bed flat, then moved to a small house, and currently in a 3 bed cottage. Perfectly adequate for our family, though we're toying with the idea of making one last 'move up' to a 4 bed place. Then I guess once the kids grow up and move out, it'll be downsizing for just DH and me!! Which set me wondering... how many house moves have you made so far... and how many more do you envisage? At what point is it still 'worth' moving up - ie if your kids are in the 10-14 bracket as ours are, would you move again or stay put on the grounds that it's not a million years before they'll be off to uni/moving out etc? And also.... when do you start thinking about downsizing? While the kids are at college? Or settled into marriage and jobs? I'm now wishing my life away, honest! I'm just curious.

oh, believe you me, i hate moving. it just seems to be my fate in life.

Elphaba · 29/10/2007 13:53

Would we move again? While the children are at primary school there is no need. May move when they older or when they've left home but I can't see a move on the cards for years yet.

4 times with parents, off to uni (3 different addresses), I'll just count 1 in my first job (live-in) but I 'moved' 3 times to different buildings while there, back to parents for a year, then down south where I lived in 2 different house shares and two rented flats before buying a 3 bedd terrace with DH, then up north again with DH to our current 4-bed semi, and planning to move somewhere bigger in the next couple of years.

SO that makes 14 so far, give or take...

tasja · 29/10/2007 13:57

I'm 29 and I moved 11 times.
DH is 28 and he moved 19 times.

Dh and I are on our third house together. The last one was about 100yards away from the previous one.

We are agreed that we will not move now until the house is too much for us or we want to give some money to the dcs. We envisage staying where we are (barring unforseen circumstances) for around the next 20 years. It is the closest I will ever come to my dream house and location (given financial and practical restraints) and there is no where else I would rather be.

GreenGlassGoblin · 29/10/2007 14:02

and I'm going to keep moving until I can live somewhere I don't have to listen to the neighbours tv/stereo through the wall... Then I'll stop

Lived in 3 different houses in the UK as a child. 2 different houses in Saudi Arabia.

A flat and numerous hostels in Australia.
Owned a property when I was 21 and then sold it.

Lived in rented accomodation when at Uni.

My husband and I moved house last year....it was our third time in 4 years. We bought our first property in 2002!

Blimey....No wonder I don't mind moving house. I seem to have done it rather a lot!

7 times with dh (over 13 year period), 5 rented, 2 owned. Plan on moving again in the next 2/3 years to our long term 'family home', and then staying put.

Capers · 29/10/2007 20:32

At least 21 times and not including travel, temporary arrangements e.g. staying with friends, travel, back to parents etc.

Still renting so goodness knows what I'll amass in a liftetime.

Strangely, still pack like an amateur.

Since DH and I have been together we have lived in 10 different houses - each move was because of his job and no, he is not in the forces either. It's a very lonely, nomadic existence, and none of the houses we have owned, so we always have to re-decorate/new curtains/get rid of or buy furniture. Latest house an absolute shithole and I hate it (actually I hate the place we live full stop. One of the perils of being married to my DH) I miss friends and family mostly. You can make new friends, but when you are only in a place for a couple of years, those close friendships are rarely forged, they are more acquaintances and nearly always through work, so your new friend options are limited.
