Ovens that are microwaves too

We're planning our replacement kitchen and Wickes have recommended an oven that doubles as a microwave rather than having a second oven and a separate microwave. I'd never heard of these before - can anyone tell me if they're any good please?

Yes - we've got one in our new kitchen (incidentally designed and fitted by Wickes). Works really well, although I think it's a bit 'slow' if you're just using it as an oven so raising the temperature a little helps.

Wouldn't be without it now I've got it, plus it's saved valuable space on the side.

Celeriacacaca · 11/02/2020 14:56

Thanks Sedentary, that's very helpful.

We have one. It's our second oven. As it's a smaller capacity we can use that if we're just cooking a small amount. And by having the microwave in it, it saves on space.

Both ovens are from Neff. Had them since August and very pleased with them so far - both the oven and microwave element in the combi work well.

TheDogsMother · 11/02/2020 14:58

They are brilliant. Ours is multi function over, microwave and grill. You won't regret it

BIWI · 11/02/2020 15:04

Here's a photo of ours - sorry it's only a side-on view, but shows the amount of space they take up.

We had an AEG one. It was good, but a little on the small side for a full Christmas dinner. It was tiny kitchen though! In our new kitchen (equally tiny) we bought a steam oven instead, which defrosts things and steams vegetables really well, and is a bit bigger. It can't do porridge or hot chocolate like a microwave though!

isseywith4vampirecats · 11/02/2020 15:24

we have a free standing one that is a microwave and convection oven its brilliant especially as there are only two of us so for small items its good

Imonaplane · 11/02/2020 15:58

I also have the Neff one. Had it for 3 years and am still very pleased with it.

We used to have a combination microwave/oven/grill, I didn’t like it because it was difficult to clean the top (of the inside) properly with it having the grill element

Celeriacacaca · 11/02/2020 16:49

Thanks all, that has helped a lot. Lovely kitchen Biwi!

Biwi. Same as ours but we have them the other way round !

Peachi82 · 11/02/2020 17:23

Do you get these as normal sized ovens or are they always smaller?

Aswellaslocal · 11/02/2020 17:46

We have very similar and the only issue is the height of the combi. Okay for me but dc struggle putting things in

AlunWynsKnee · 11/02/2020 17:53

I like our Bosch one a lot. We have a single oven below it but I use the combi in preference for smaller things.

We have one of these, it's our only oven. It's quite a decent size - I've just made a bolognese for two nights plus the freezer in a big stock pot.
It's also a grill but we don't use the grill function except when DS decided to grill a pizza

BubblesBuddy · 11/02/2020 18:14

Don’t have it as your only oven. I have a Neff combined oven microwave and, although it’s great, it’s not big. I would only have it as a second oven. Mine is actually my third oven. It’s really not suitable for your only oven if you actually cook in any way seriously. What does Which say about this oven? Is it any good as an oven? I would have my doubts.

bettybattenburg · 11/02/2020 18:19

Why do you have 3 ovens?

takeyourrubbishhome · 11/02/2020 18:28

We had a Neff one in our old house (same setup as @BIWI) and have just spec’d the same for our new kitchen. Our combi micro was excellent. Yes it’s a bit smaller than a full size oven, but sometimes that’s a good thing. It was reliable and used to cook cakes well. Can’t wait for the new one!

BIWI · 11/02/2020 18:30

@Aswellaslocal Yes, that's a very good point! I'm a shortarse too, and have to be careful putting things in/taking things out. If I were to do the kitchen again, I'd lower the ovens by about 6 inches I think.

BubblesBuddy · 11/02/2020 18:59

I have a large kitchen and when I entertain I can cook items in separate ovens. So effectively two singles and the combi oven. Lots of people with Agas have 3 ovens.

dressingdrown · 11/02/2020 19:03

I've got one - 45cm combi-microwave.

It works well in all it's modes unlike it's predecessor which was really just a microwave.

My friend has the same one and if I bake at her house (usually to occupy children when I'm babysitting) I use it in preference to her main cooker which has ver my imprecise temperature controls.

Mine is a Miele but most of the manufacturers make them now.

I seriously swithered about getting a steam oven but am glad I didn't.

dressingdrown · 11/02/2020 19:05

Oh and I use my 60cm oven most as an oven because it has pyroltyic lining and is easier to clean!!

Not because the combi is deficient in any way.

GlamGiraffe · 11/02/2020 19:11

Like Bubbles mine is my 3rd oven. It's very useful to have 3 ovensvifvuou book a lot of for large amounts of people @bettybattenburg.

I have a Miele one. It's fantastic. I dont use the grill option in it but as an added oven its very versatile and of course the microwave is very useful. I had a Neff. one previously which was also very good. As others have mentioned. I would say they are too small to be an only oven.

RandomUsernameHere · 11/02/2020 19:17

I've got exactly the same setup as^^ Biwi, also from Neff. The combi has been good so far (had it 2 years).

PigletJohn · 11/02/2020 19:44

not keen on Wickes own-brand appliances.
