Shocking composite door cost

First time buying a new front door. Wanted a nice composite door but shocked at the prices I’m being quoted. Have you had one supplied and fitted? How much did it cost? We were told whoever fits the front door must be fensa certified (fensa website also states this) therefore buying a door and fitting it ourselves is not an option. REALLY need your experience guys. Need to make a decision ASAP. X

Have you asked for quotes from smaller local businesses or the massive national window companies who will go to great lengths to convince you you’re getting the best deal but are actually ripping you off?

We ended up having our composite front door from a small local business and it was much cheaper. Worth shopping around.

€2,100 inc VAT for front door plus glass panel at side of door- also got rest of the house done, would have been more expensive if just the door done.

£1400 Solidor fitted here recently.

I thought you could get one without a fensa certificate and then when/if you sell the house you just pay £50 for an indemnity certificate? I’ve just got a non fensa window and that’s what google said anyway.

I think building control will sign the work off for a fee, if you use a non FENSA registered company,

We paid £3,000 for front and back doors with extra glass panels around both. That was not the cheapest quote we had but around the lower end

Following with interest. We are looking to replace our old, wooden, leaky door very soon too. Had one quote in so far, £1295 😳. Nothing flash - just two panels of glass within, letterbox and handle.

I hate composite doors. Would you not just get a good quality wooden one?

Paid £1000 supplied & fitted for mine (and recycling the old door)

For comparison I paid approx £650 for a normal UPVC back door, fitted & included cat flap.

I paid £1300 for mine about five years ago.

You could probably get a steel security door for a similar price, with a 5 bar lock and frame included if you search. Hard to break into a house with those. Just don't use the company that is in NW London, name beginning with M, they are pants.

Local company, 4 years ago, about £1,200.

Why does a composite door require a FENSA certificate when presumably any other kind of door doesn't?

I had a quote for a Solidor from a local company for £1500 for a standard door which I thought was a lot but maybe it’s average for Solidor?

One person's shocking is another's going rate - what was the quote?

it depends on so many factors.
we have rock doors, front and back. back was around 800 including installation (smaller door& simpler design)
front was around 2000 but the door was larger, period design, and included the window above the door.
just the door in the same design as back door would have been around 1000.

a wooden door to the same safety specs would have been double.

Paid £1300 using a local company in August this year, quotes varied from £1250-1500.

doors need to be sturdy and safe and last a long time.

My back door was well over £2000, but it's bigger than average in an old house. It opens straight into the kitchen and the draughts made it unpleasant to be in there.

I wanted the very best, most thermally efficient I could get, but must admit I was shocked at the quote. However, the difference with the new door is phenomenal and I've never regretted it.
It's also very secure.

About £1000 but it was several years ago, for a rental,property. Seemed a lot but it came with 3 safety levers, a nice glass fanlight and all the hardware. Plus installation was very quick and efficient, no mess, and no,painting needed. Still looks v nice 7 years later.
Previous door - the original wooden Edwardian - was flimsy and we were told could easily be kicked in. The co. was Yale Doors but I don't think they're operating any more.

Because, funnily enough, your preferences didn’t come into my decision!

I prefer wooden doors too, but composite doors are safer and don’t need any maintenance. Ours gets a lot of direct sunlight in summer and battered by the weather in winter, so it makes sense- unfortunately

I haven’t had a chance to look into it yet, but I know the Academy Door has 10 point multipoint locking, anti snap, pick, bump & drill cylinders should prevent most burglars (though I’m sure they’ll just break the back windows instead 🤣. They’re SBD - police recommended. As well as FENSA.

They are well built internally (some you can punch your way through) and for a bit extra you can have a door without a handle (which I prefer for front doors )

I’d go with them without looking into it much more if I liked them, but I don’t really like the look of them 😖🙄

I won’t be paying £1750 though. I don’t like them £350 more.

Need to see what quality the cheaper one is
