It’ll be about 3m by 2m.

We have our washing machine and dryer, and it's where I store cleaning equipment, the laundry basket and extra dry goods

LolaSmiles · 28/07/2019 14:47

It would depend on the size of the kitchen.

Ideally I would want a worktop, storage for muddy boots and pet things, a big cast iron sink for mucky stuff so I don't have to use the kitchen, and washing machine and tumble drier.

Poppins2016 · 28/07/2019 14:53

My ideal utility room would have a sink, a washing machine, tumble dryer, a pull down clothes drying rack, coat pegs (for mucky gardening coats!) and a boot rack. I'd also want a tall cupboard to store an ironing board, vacuum cleaner, etc (preferably with space to hang a laundry basket inside the top of the cupboard).

Lllot5 · 28/07/2019 14:55

What everyone else has said and maybe a extra freezer.

Wingedharpy · 28/07/2019 14:57

A scullery maid.

VictoriaBun · 28/07/2019 14:58

We've got our washing machine, a unit with 2 drawers and 3 cupboards , with a Belfast sink.
One of those pull up to the ceiling racks that allows you to dry clothes indoors. Also a full wall length cupboards ceiling to floor, which has loads of extra dry food goods and cans and jars for brexit stock and also my airing cupboard, plus another freezer.

IHeartKingThistle · 28/07/2019 15:00

We got rid of the sink in ours and don't regret it. It just ended up as a dumping ground. We have floor to ceiling cupboards, washer, dryer and an airer that pulls out from the wall. The recycling stuff/can crusher too and wall racks, one for football boots, one for potatoes and onions etc.

bonzo77 · 28/07/2019 15:01

Big sink. Washing machine and tumble drier. Storage for all cleaning stuff and for coats / wellies. As many ceiling hung clothes pulleys as there was space for: 3x2m would probably mean 2 or possibly 3 of the biggest pulley maid. Radiator and good ventilation and door to outside. Storage for my stash of dry goods / cat food / cleaning products / light bulbs / tool boxes. Good lighting for doing ironing. Counter space for folding.

I REALLY want a utility room.

We haven’t got one yet but are planning one in new house extension.

Recycling is a good call. And a pulley and tall cupboard. I’d qui5 like a pull down ironing board.

IHeartKingThistle · 28/07/2019 15:06

Ooh I'd love a pull down ironing board!

I saw a kitchen once that had an ironing board that pulled up -voila!- out of a drawer. It was amazing.

FixTheBone · 28/07/2019 15:07

I'm glad someone mentioned it - ventillation.

Get a controllable extractor fan for when you're drying stuff.

It's also not a bad place to put your combi-boiler, and, if you're feeling inclined, you could get a large, fixed ironing board or even an ironing press - we have 9 of us in our house - wish I had the space for this.....

Happyspud · 28/07/2019 15:07

I’m putting one in now but it will have washer, dryer, sink, extra dishwasher, 3 large laundry baskets, shelves with baskets for clean laundry by person and then high medicine cupboard and storage for cleaning products. Also drying rail over a radiator. I’ll have a Shiela maid above the Aga in the kitchen and a separate boot room and larder elsewhere. Otherwise the utility would have had to accommodate those needs.

TheFaerieQueene · 28/07/2019 15:11

I have a washing machine, tumble dryer, spare dishwasher, wine fridge, sink and lots of base and wall units. I keep the work tops as clear as possible. I use the cabinets for an overflow larder and overflow cleaning stuff. I also keep the iron and ironing board in there too.
I have a separate boot room so the utility is a ‘clean room’ if that makes sense.

ImNotYourGranny · 28/07/2019 15:11

A comfy chair. I have a utility room in my basement. It's the coolest place in the house, has wifi and seems to repel every other member of my family. Perfect place for peace and quiet. My kids don't realise that sorting laundry doesn't actually take 2 hours. Grin

TankGirl97 · 28/07/2019 15:46

Ours is about that size. We have washing machine and tumble drier, tall freezer, sink, boiler, storage cupboards for vacuum and tools. More cupboards for arts and crafts stuff, shelving for cleaning products. Microwave also lives in there.
I’d also like space for drying clothes, coat pegs and boots/shoe storage and ironing. Unfortunately it’s not big enough for all of it.

minipie · 28/07/2019 18:55

We’re just building one - 2.4m x 1.6m plus an extra alcove that just fits the laundry machines stacked.

Here’s what I’m putting in it:

  • laundry machines stacked
  • shelf above them for laundry baskets
  • extractor fan (moisture controlled) above that
  • sheila maid
  • heated towel rail for wet coats, maybe a fold down drying rack above
  • small undercounter freezer
  • very small wine fridge
  • large broom cupboard for hoover, broom, mop, cleaning products
  • small but deep sink
  • small pull out unit for laundry liquids
  • 2 rows of wall cabinets (it has a high ceiling) for misc household stuff. All the stuff that is currently scattered around the house in random drawers and I’m the only one who can find it Hmm. Also bulky food
  • slot at the end of the units for ironing board
  • hook behind the door to hang up a ladder
  • mini drawers on the worksurface for paperwork

I still have some spare wall space between the door and the towel rail so I’ll see what I can squeeze in there Grin maybe hooks for PE kit etc

I wouldn’t put recycling in there, I’m too lazy and know if I had to go to a separate room to recycle it wouldn’t happen Blush so have a split kitchen bin with recyclable and non recyclable sections.

ParadigmGiraffe · 28/07/2019 20:03

Lots of great ideas thank you. Wine fridge, of course....

Ours is small but there's a sink which we use for filling the bucket and cleaning pet bowls, washing machine, tumble drier and overhead cupboards. Also a window.

Also, lots of general "stuff" like dustpan, ironing board etc get shoved in there. It's a mess but it's handy.

BubblesBuddy · 29/07/2019 03:02

I have similar to everyone else and definitely have a big sink with a separately plumbed in deep draining board. Great for soaking and hand washing. We too have an under counter wine fridge. Also a big heated towel rad.

I had an overhead pulley drying rack but they can get in the way if you have lowish ceilings. I now have a clothes rail along most of one wall. It’s above a work surface with drawers under it for batteries, light bulbs etc. Below that is recycling storage and welly boot storage. I have a large broom cupboard and that takes the ironing board as well as cleaning products. The room also has French doors to the outside. I never iron in there as it faces south.

I also have cubby holes above the sink and fridge for washed items that don’t need ironing. We store vases under the sink and washing machine and tumble dryer are stacked with detergent storage above. I wouldn’t change anything.

Bluesheep8 · 29/07/2019 08:36

We have:
1 and a half bowl sink with waste disposal
Washing machine
Under counter fridge
Double cupboard under sink
Double wall mounted cupboard with wine rack between the 2 cupboards.
There is room for a tumble dryer but haven't got round to installing one yet.

MadamePompadour · 29/07/2019 08:44

Mine is small but has a washing machine, tumble dryer, tall freezer, pull down drying rack, dehumidifier, a cupboard mainly full of obscure baking stuff, 2 large pantry shelves mainly full of alcohol, 2 small shelves full of cleaning products, a small worktop where dh dumps tools.

Kubo · 29/07/2019 08:47

Watching for ideas 🙂

Aragog · 29/07/2019 08:55

Ours has:

Washer
Dryer
Tall Freezer
2.5 cupboards at ground level and two cupboards on the wall, with work top around it all

In it we store laundry stuff inc walk baskets when clothes are clean but waiting to be ironed, ironing board and airers . There's room to stand the airer to dry clothes too.
Cupboards also have the serving dishes, plastic tubs and boxes, kitchen stuff not used every day.
Work top has wine and beers, mixers etc that don't need to be in fridge plus I stand things on there like bread maker, popcorn machine etc.

Aragog · 29/07/2019 08:56

Ours does have an extractor too I meant to add.
We decided against adding a sink as didn't feel we needed one. Still happy with that decision.
