House over the back was reroofed last year during the heatwave.
They were 'not' fit builders.
I was tempted to yell out the window "put yer shirt on!"

avocuddl · 19/07/2019 21:52

Yay wherefore!! So excited for you! We are also starting on Wednesday! I'm so nervous!!

avocuddl · 19/07/2019 22:39

@WhereDoesThisToiletGo of course!

Noroof · 20/07/2019 18:50

Tile shopping for shower room today!

Lol we did the same @Noroof - we were at Boydens at 8am escaping the builders. They have done a huge amount of work today though. Loft completely plastered and ready for second fix this coming week, old kitchen plastered, new doors steel in, walls mostly built.

I like all those tiles @Noroof.

We’ve spent a unproductive day trying to fit the kitchen. We’re both feeling a bit despondent. New week brings new enthusiasm! (I hope) Smile

Noroof · 22/07/2019 07:38

Ok appliance shopping. Oven...Aeg? Cda? Bosch? Hotpoint?
Must be under 500.

Does the hob need to match do we think or mix brands? Help

WorrisomeHeart · 22/07/2019 09:09

Get a free one month Which subscription and do all your research via that. I’ve gone for an AEG hob and a Neff extractor based on the Which reviews - basically my criteria was must be a Best Buy, a decent price and fit the space obvs. It really helped (even though I’ve not got the cool hob to hood function that I would have had going for both AEG).

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 22/07/2019 11:58

What's a hob to hood function? Turning on the hob automatically turns on the hood?
I started a thread about not wanting appliances smarter than me.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 22/07/2019 12:01

SKIP!!

(the builders' shirts are off already. My reaction?
"are you wearing sunscreen?")

With regards to financially trustings builders, I think this is the hardest part as you never quite know. Apart fromm references, knowing how many jobs they have on the go etc, you have to go with gut to some extent. Also I think knowing a builder is really busy, and having to wait for them to start your job is a good thing. Means they have cash flow.
We paid no deposit and no money up front for anything. Good, financially stable builders will have credit with all suppliers that they work with. They will not be living hand to mouth.
Our payments we in 4 instalment, the last instalment being the biggest and not to be paid until all snagging was complete and signed off. Each invoice detailed what we were paying for so I could physically see the corresponding work.
We worked on the basis that had they have gone bust, in theory another firm could have picked up the project from that point - with renewed quotes etc, but we would have only paid for what had been done.
It does all feel like a leap of faith though - and it's only out the other end that I feel confident in the process!

PazRaz10 · 22/07/2019 12:15

@lightlypoached It is likely that that 10% would be available at any time - it's a very typical sales technique. Unless you are 100% happy you won't want to shop anywhere else or change things, I would continue to think about it.

soakedat3 · 22/07/2019 13:04

LOL WhereDoes! It's the mum inside us. I offered New Dad factor 50 :D It's to be really hot tomorrow. They will burn!

We are still at a standstill. Not a happy bunny!!

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 22/07/2019 13:37

I don't want Boss Builder ringing up tomorrow to say that his lads won't be in as they've got sunburn

Bakersdelight · 22/07/2019 14:07

Has anyone on here installed Blindspace or similar for concealing blinds for patio doors?

WorrisomeHeart · 22/07/2019 14:40

@WhereDoesThisToiletGo, yep that’s exactly what it does!!

Kitchen builder reckons we might have a roof on by the end of next week. They are absolutely powering through. First fix plumbing done today for the kitchen and I have had it confirmed that the washing machine will be plumbed back in by the end of next week!

MyNameIsJane · 23/07/2019 06:29

I’ve had a quote for the quartz worktops last night. £££

Toilet & en-suite look nearly finished when we popped in last night. We took a weekend off to go to Margate.

Bedroom furniture is being delivered today.

WBWIFE · 23/07/2019 07:27

Found the most perfect navy called Monsoon nights by Valspar! Who knew picking paint was so hard.

Bought all our lights the other day, that was really hard work too!!

Plasterer should be coming today to finish last wall and we can then start tiling and get our bathroom in.

He's then going to plaster the kitchen so it cna dry out and I can paint ready for fitting next week.

Kitchen is being delivered this week at some point and it will be being fitted next weekend with help from DH friend he works for. They're swapping trades for each other as favours so technically free 😁

I'm not sure when it will all feel like it's coming together? I guess once the flooring is down!

WBWIFE · 23/07/2019 07:30

@Noroof I've gone for hotpoint double oven and built in microwave. The microwave can make crispy roast potatoes in 10 mins apparently!! I also went For hotpoint hob but the hood didn't match

TheFatberg · 23/07/2019 07:30

@MyNameIsJane we went for quartz as well. I feel less bad about the cost as we ended up with money off our kitchen which offset the price. It's going to be fitted this week.

@WBWIFE I really like that paint. It doesn't feel like it's all coming together for us yet and we're so close to the end. It helped having flooring and painting done though.

WBWIFE · 23/07/2019 07:32

@TheFatberg I never normally go dark but do love the feel of this.

I hope ours comes together soon we need to be in mid August really. The house was a lot more work than we anticipated but hopefully it'll be worth it in the end!

WorrisomeHeart · 23/07/2019 07:55

Oh that navy is lovely. I am also agonising over paint colours for the loft room - am tempted to go for a deep blue because the light up there is good but my anxiety says go neutral 😂
We’ve done a mist coat on the part of the en-suite that the radiator is going on and I just want to get it all done now. I’m on leave this week with DS but not sure he will be particularly helpful.

Noroof · 23/07/2019 09:29

I was going for the beko oven as I really rate their appliances but when I saw it in the flesh the stainless steel was really a silver plastic coating so I pumped for the Bosch. I suppose the oven is one of the more visible appliances so needs to look good. I'm now sweating on about induction hobs and it all matching. The slight irony being I hardly use the hob... usually just use the instant pot and the microwave. Ah well

Noroof · 23/07/2019 09:31

Love that navy. I'm sweating on the paint front as I'm shit with colours but the entire house has been magnolia and I hate it so I'm forcing myself. We will have to paint: the kitchen, 3 bedrooms, 2 living rooms, shower room and hall. Eek

TheFatberg · 23/07/2019 09:33

We went for all white throughout with paint. I couldn't face making a decision about colours and we can always change things later.
