AIBU or should herringbone tiles be 'straight'

Tilers are part way through tiling our bathroom. We've got one wall in small brick tiles which we asked for in a herringbone pattern. I expected them to do this straight with all cuts at 45 degrees. They've done it on a random angle - should I have specified they needed to lay them at 45 degrees? Even the B&Q tutorial starts with an explanation of how you cut the first tile at 45 degrees to ensure the tiles run in a 'straight' line floor to ceiling.

They're back in the morning to finish and we need to work out if we can live with it. We've been 4 weeks without a bathroom 😭

Oh god it looks like your wall is drooping!

I couldnt live with that.

mytieisascarf · 13/12/2018 17:21

Nope- I'd have to ask them to fix it. That is ridiculous.

TulipsInbloom1 · 13/12/2018 17:22

Is it only that wall? If so id get them to strip the tiles, smooth and then finish everything else. Id then book a proper tiler in who knows how to do herringbone. Id not trust these builders to do it right.

MisstoMrs · 13/12/2018 17:23

That isn’t right. Sorry Angry

skenn3285 · 13/12/2018 17:24

Yes it's just one wall, the others have large tiles and they look great!

Would it ruin the tiles removing them? (Possibly a stupid question! Never tiled anything before)

I would expect the builders to replace any tiles at their expense. Theyve done it wrong.

Cmagic7 · 13/12/2018 17:28

Oh no, that's not right!

user1494670108 · 13/12/2018 17:29

That looks all wrong, it may be that they tile over them rather than remove them but either way it is definitely their problem to sort out- do not pay them!

bringbackthestripes · 13/12/2018 17:30

That is awful! It would be easier to pull them all off before it all sets tbh but as they have made the mess it should be down to them to sort it.
I couldn’t live with that.

FadedRed · 13/12/2018 17:32

Totally unacceptable, they should be straight. Four weeks without a bathroom is disgraceful- why so long?

skenn3285 · 13/12/2018 17:37

This one is actually our en suite in the loft we're getting converted. We had to rip out our main bathroom to move the wall to fit the loft stairs, various delays have meant replacing that (which should have been done in a week) has meant the loft is now moving quicker! Don't mind which is finished - I just need a shower.

costacoffeecup · 13/12/2018 17:40

That's terrible! The tiles are lovely though. How could they get it so wrong?

organiseandbrewery · 13/12/2018 17:44

Oh dear, that's definitely not right, it would drive me potty having to look at that. They should put it right at their expense.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 13/12/2018 17:45

It looks wrong but looking at the very bottom row of tiles, the corner of each tile repeats at the same level

ShatnersBassoon · 13/12/2018 17:56

It is too wrong to be able to get used to. You'd feel like you were showering uphill!

They can't have set the first ones square and carried on regardless. They'll need to put it right at their expense.

DrWashout · 13/12/2018 18:23

Beautiful tiles but that is not OK.

DryHeave · 13/12/2018 18:26

Oh no. It looks like pixelated pornography.

MaisyPops · 13/12/2018 18:29

That's really bad. They should fix it for you at their expense.
As tradespeople they really should know how to do that properly.

Disfordarkchocolate · 13/12/2018 18:33

Definitely should be straight, I can't understand how they thought this was ok. They need to replace them at their cost

Chewbecca · 13/12/2018 18:37

I must be really silly as I can't see what is wrong with it?! In what way are they random? I love the look by the way.

thefuriousfuggler · 13/12/2018 18:39

Loving "pixellated pornography" [grin} But yes, that is shite and they should re-do it at their expense.

thefuriousfuggler · 13/12/2018 18:40

....and I will re-do my Grin at my own expense Blush

SoaringSwallow · 13/12/2018 18:54

The bottom row is not correct. They need to be equilateral triangles and those are not. They do all appear to be exactly the same amount off though..!

Whoever tiled that must have noticed before the finished because at the sides they'd be needing ever larger tiles on one side and smaller on the other!

It needs redone. And most definitely at their expense. If not, report to trading standards (is that the right body?). It's unacceptable.

GreenTulips · 13/12/2018 18:57

It's like sea sickness
