Best places to live West Yorkshire

Maybenexttime08 · 13/10/2018 07:44

Hi all,

Having lived in the south for the last 15 years, we’ve decided to relocate to West Yorkshire.

With 2 boys age 10 and 7 I would love some advice on best places (commutable to Leeds or Manchester) to live - good schools, friendly people, affordable!

Any info would be mega helpful!!

It depends on your budget, there are some lovely places surrounding Leeds like Horsforth, Yeadon, Roundhay etc but anywhere with a LS postcode is quite expensive. We live in Bradford, there are some lovely places like Saltaire and Ilkley but you have to factor in that things like car insurance is expensive in most areas in Bradford.

Maybenexttime08 · 13/10/2018 08:20

Thanks - our budget is max max max £500k and want somewhere quite rural but with good schools. Just worried we’ll end up with a long commute if not careful!

There's a thread on here about Leeds. We recently moved here after 18 years in the USA and chose Leeds as we wanted to live in a city, great links to London, lots to do, but I will warn you house prices surprised us - much higher than anticipated. We love it though and move to our new period home in Headingley in 2 weeks! Ilkley and Otley are lovely but too far out for us and no cheaper. Guiseley is nice too but too suburban for us. I'm from Bury and Ramsbottom is a great area if you're looking at Manchester.

The Calder Valley (Sowerby Bridge, Hebden Bridge, Todmorden) is lovely. Hebden is quite alternative and houses tend to be expensive so a lot of people now are moving over to Todmorden. It has a sports centre, good schools, a brilliant park and market hall and the houses are more reasonably priced than in Hebden Bridge. It's also on a train line between Leeds and Manchester so easily commutable, although I'm not sure what the drive would be like every day.

With 500k you'll get something fabulous - this is gorgeous in Leeds but next to the park Gledhow Wood Road, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS8

Or this in Headingley St. Chads Avenue, Leeds

ToBeClear · 13/10/2018 08:24

Ignore me you said rural - I don't do rural lol

Sammilouwho · 13/10/2018 08:27

For 500k you can get a gorgeous house in Ilkley!
Gordon Street, Ilkley, LS29

That’s a great budget for the area, my in laws live near Selby, in a little hamlet not far, the commute is a pain as there are no buses or whatnot, that is North Yorkshire though, but it may be worth looking at.

Chickencellar · 13/10/2018 09:09

How about denby dale ?

Chickencellar · 13/10/2018 09:27

@Chickencellar what a view!

The EA that wrote the description needs to be shot though. Terrible.

Maybenexttime08 · 13/10/2018 10:56

Thanks @Chickencellar - that’s on our favourites list.. As is this one!

A bit expensive but you never know.

Does anyone know anything about this area? Ballanden, Rossendale??

OP posts:
ToBeClear · 13/10/2018 12:28

Rossendale is lovely but lancashire - very popular- houses go fast.

Bluesheep8 · 13/10/2018 14:46

Look at the outskirts of Huddersfield...Slaithwaite, Meltham, Marsden. Stunning rural views and walks and in easy reach of Huddersfield town and Leeds and Manchester. We relocated to the area a couple of years ago and love it Smile

Maybenexttime08 · 13/10/2018 17:09

@bluesheep8 - thanks - will take a look now! This local knowledge is so useful!

W lowered our asking price today, so fx’d it gets things moving!

Sweeping statement but I think in general north Leeds (heading out towards North Yorks) is nicer than in between Manchester & Leeds. Huddersfield isn't particularly nice.

UrsulaPandress · 13/10/2018 20:31

Saddleworth is the pits. Don't move there.

theboxofdelights · 13/10/2018 20:41

I would head towards Harrogate too OP, Alwoodley area of Leeds and A61 villages.

Maybenexttime08 · 14/10/2018 09:18

I know it's not west yorkshire, but was is Doncaster like?

OP posts:
hammeringinmyhead · 14/10/2018 10:12

Bonny Donny! Not great. Cheap for a reason and would be a bitch to commute to anywhere but Sheffield.

I'm from Linthwaite in the above mentioned Slaithwaite, Marsden area near Huddersfield. Lovely place and people but the high school (Colne Valley) has been awful for about 10 years and was last rated Requires Improvement. Holmfirth High is better (but expensive to live in).

I would swerve Halifax and Bradford (I was born there).

GreyGardens88 · 14/10/2018 10:50

One of the villages between Leeds, Harrogate and Wetherby. Probably the most like the South you will get in the North

pinkdelight · 14/10/2018 13:14

Another vote for Todmorden! Gorgeous environs, great market, good schools and sense of community, arty events, indie shops and lotsa southern exiles plus nice local folk and handy links to Leeds & Mancs.

Maybenexttime08 · 14/10/2018 13:19

The trick is the schools! I need a really good state secondary which is really narrowing down the search!

OP posts:
Hoppinggreen · 14/10/2018 13:25

HD3 area of Huddersfield
Good state schools ( Primary and secondary) plus Private options if yiu want
£500k would buy you an absolutely gorgeous house and you can get to both Manchester and Leeds easily
A brand new boutique hotel - The Manor House has just opened in Lindley and the restaurant and bars are lovely. There is also the award winning Eric’s restaurant and he’s just opened a fancy wine bar too. There are other wine bars and restaurants here as well plus you aren’t far from Huddersfield, which to be fair has grotty bits but the restaurant scene is really excellent- we have the only Georgian restaurant outside London I believe.
Calder Valley is nice but prone to flooding and there’s mainly one road in and out so it can be a problem. The road was closed recently and it was a nightmare.

spacefighter · 14/10/2018 13:26

But Garforth and most of east Leeds isn't a great place to live.

Best places to live West Yorkshire
Hoppinggreen · 14/10/2018 13:26

maybe depending on where you moved to in HD3 you would be able to access Salendine Nook High School, which is where most of DDs friends go and I’ve heard is very good.
