Best places to live West Yorkshire

Maybenexttime08 · 13/10/2018 07:44

Hi all,

Having lived in the south for the last 15 years, we’ve decided to relocate to West Yorkshire.

With 2 boys age 10 and 7 I would love some advice on best places (commutable to Leeds or Manchester) to live - good schools, friendly people, affordable!

Any info would be mega helpful!!

I travel to Manchester often from there and have never found it to be an issue. I jump straight on the M62. I went to uni in Huddersfield and actually found it took longer to get onto the motorway queuing at Ainley Top than it does for me now to travel from J31 to J24. Once past there it's all a much of a muchness travel wise

namechangedtoday15 · 14/10/2018 22:14

If you don't have to be in Leeds every day, South Manchester (Trafford) is hard to beat for schools and an easy commute (by tram / train) to Manchester. Leeds in commutable but not daily unless you're happy to beat the rush hour.

BikeRunSki · 14/10/2018 22:16

OK, fair play LMW1990. I stand corrected.

Chickencellar · 15/10/2018 07:45

I wouldn't want to commute every day from altofts to Manchester. M62 can be awful for accidents , Google maps suggests this morning it would be 1hr50 because of delays .

hoochymama1 · 15/10/2018 08:51

Yes, yes to HD8 Grin

BikeRunSki · 15/10/2018 09:13

Waves at hoochy, notapizzaeater, shaggedthroughahedgebackwards, butty and Fatima.

FWIW, I commute from HD8 to Leeds everyday, via the M1. I have been doing so for 18 years! The M1 Smartmotorway works have made a huge, positive difference to my journey. Even at 8 am/5 pm my journey typically takes 45 mins, rarely more than an hour and occasionally 35 mins. Admittedly, my office is one of the first buildings you come to approaching Leeds from the south on the M621, but the journey has been vastly improved by the smartmotorway. Occasionally get the train from Denby Dale or Wakefield, but I mourn the loss of the 484 (or was it 482) bus that went practically door to door.

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 15/10/2018 09:21

No way would I recommend commuting across the M62.

A lot of the recommendations do depend on how far you are happy to commute, and whether you would drive or prefer to be on the train. Lots of the places mentioned are lovely but the commute would be a pita. e.g. Denby Dale (though lovely) would be an hour and a half by either train or car to Manchester, better driving to Leeds but it's still not a commute I'd want to do every day. But I do know people who are very happy to do that, and you definitely get a lot more house for your money.

£500k is a very good amount wherever you decide to go. I'd just be careful of getting drawn to 'wow' houses which don't then fit the rest of your lifestyle.

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 15/10/2018 09:22

And cross posted with BikeRunSki to show someone who is happy with that commute! :)

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 15/10/2018 09:24

I'm just out the north side of the city centre so it would be another 20 minutes or thereabouts onto BRS's commute, which is probably influencing how I view it. (I'm also lucky in being able to cycle in to work in 20 minutes.)

Hoppinggreen · 15/10/2018 09:35

HD3 gives great access to the M62 in either direction, I’ve commuted to both Leeds and Manchester from here (and DH to Sheffield)
Traffic can be bad at rush hour(s) but not if you are used to the M25 or similar!
Hello bikerunski not had one of these for a while!

BikeRunSki · 15/10/2018 09:38

Hi HoppingGreen. Keeping up the fight for the good name of Hooderzfield!

buttybuttybutthole · 15/10/2018 10:53

The thing about hd8 is that you're literally 45 mins-1hr. from Manchester Leeds and Sheffield. I used to easily get to Leeds in 35mins if traffic was good.

You have self contained villages with their own infrastructure, communities, shops, schools etc. Almost all schools are outstanding. And I think people there are really happy, because you have beautiful rural countryside, a sense of community, but also the opportunity for good employment due to the fantastic transport links.

I don't live there any more Sadbut hope I'm selling it!

If you specifically want to commute to Manchester, Holmfirth, upperthong, netherthong (yes they're real names), Meltham, holmbridge and Holme are similarly good choices Smile

Hairytangerine · 15/10/2018 11:02

Saddleworth is not the pits!

Over budget but example.www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-74701388.html

Rural but 30 mins to Leeds or Huddersfield

Amazing community

UrsulaPandress · 15/10/2018 11:10

Hairy Sssshhhh.

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 15/10/2018 11:20

Just to wind Ursula up, Saddleworth is indeed lovely Grin

But not 30 minutes to Leeds ime.

UrsulaPandress · 15/10/2018 12:53

I've done it in 25 minutes. At 2am.

Hoppinggreen · 15/10/2018 13:32

Not keen on Saddleworth to be honest
Nice to visit but too many golf club types - sorry ursula

Bluesheep8 · 15/10/2018 16:20

I disagree with a pp about Huddersfield not being nice. Moved to HD7 a couple of years ago and love it here. Also rented in Meltham and would recommend there too. ..

Maybenexttime08 · 15/10/2018 21:36

Found this little gem in HD9 - thanks everyone!

This is sooo useful!! So much food for thought

Nice house OP. About 10 mins down the road from me. New Mill Riad is a pretty busy main road, but that looks like one of those big houses that is set back from the road.

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 16/10/2018 07:18

Lovely house OP, it is on the outskirts of Holmfirth which is lovely

Do you know yet if your job(s) will require you to travel to Leeds or Manchester most often?

Holmfirth (and rest of HD9) is probably more central between the 2 cities and a bit nearer to Manchester than HD8 but if you are more likely to be commuting to Leeds on a regular basis then most of HD8 is nearer the M1 than HD9 and would take 10-15 mins off your commute

Hope that makes sense

lifechangesforever · 16/10/2018 07:28

Although Halifax certainly has its not so nice areas (DH being from one of them!) it has fantastic secondary schools - North Halifax Grammar and Crowley Heath, both are consistently voted as the top non-fee paying schools in W.Yorks. We may move to be in catchment later down the line.

I live in Birstall, which is amazing for commuting - I work in Leeds so I get the bus because parking is ridiculous money and we're right on the junction of the M62/M1 and M621.

If I could choose anywhere in Leeds? Would be out towards Burley and Wharfedale, somewhere near Leeds Grammar.

lifechangesforever · 16/10/2018 07:32

Agree that parts of Huddersfield are lovely - relatives live in Holmfirth which is really nice, Huddersfield city itself? Grim.
