Disguising weird bathroom "thing". Which looks better, if either?

Sorry, very trivial...

I got my bathroom refurbished recently, but there remains a weird little square panel above the toilet. Don’t know what it’s for and the plumber didn’t think it important, and I couldn’t be bothered with getting it removed.

The walls are getting plastered and painted in the next couple of weeks and that will be the room finished (a bit arse from elbow, I know)

Anyway, I planned to cover the weird bit with a frame of some kind and came across a spare during someone’s clear out at work. It’s perfect in that is deep enough to go over the weird wooden thing

My question is, does it look daft bedside the round mirror? Does it look acceptable landscape or portrait? Is it too big either way? I think I need smaller...

Portrait, definitely

littlewoollypervert · 24/07/2018 22:52

Portrait best I think. Size is ok.

freetoagoodhome · 24/07/2018 22:53

Thanks.

Seeing them here, I agree. But does it actually look okay like that? Or just best of a bad bunch? Should I find something else?

Could you buy a bigger mirror which covers the whole area of the round mirror and the bit you want to hide?

TheRealHousewifeofCheshire · 24/07/2018 22:55

Looks a bit silly but better portrait but hard to say if frame is better than the panel thats there as we have not seen it.

EdWinchester · 24/07/2018 22:58

Can't you just have one large mirror?

freetoagoodhome · 24/07/2018 22:58

This is what’s behind

Do you mean just a mirror panel? Probably. But the round one wasn’t cheap (to me) and I like it Blush

I'd phone the people who did the refurbishment and ask them what it is, and if you can remove it.

swapsicles · 24/07/2018 23:05

Personally I wouldn't cover it maybe put something in it, how deep is it?
The oblong frame just looks odd next to the oval mirror.

frasier · 24/07/2018 23:08

Just remove it if you can and plaster over. Is it some sort of ventilation? Does it open?

I think the picture frame looks odd so would either get the little panel removed or just paint it the same colour as the wall.

frasier · 24/07/2018 23:11

A bathroom cabinet would look better than another mirror.

frasier · 24/07/2018 23:11

Or a picture! Put a picture in the frame.

freetoagoodhome · 24/07/2018 23:11

I’ve lived here 12 years and it’s never been touched. But to remove it would probably mean I need in there in a fortnight Grin

OP posts:
frasier · 24/07/2018 23:12

Oh, is it a picture frame? Thought it was another mirror lol!

frasier · 24/07/2018 23:15

Out of those I like shelves with towels on. Strategically placed!

Bouledeneige · 24/07/2018 23:17

Sorry it looks odd to have the circle and square frames. I'd either investigate having the boxy thing covered or removed - checking out whether it has a function. Or just leave it.

I'd definitely not have a mirror over a loo for men to look at themselves weeing. That would be a bit weird.

freetoagoodhome · 24/07/2018 23:20

@frasier I can’t open that link? Tells me the site isn’t available in my country.

I already have glass shelves in the recess at the end of the bath, and the room is totie, so don’t want to clutter it more, though I know the extra frame does anyway!

frasier · 24/07/2018 23:22

Just google “what to put above the loo” and click images.

Some lovely ideas

freetoagoodhome · 24/07/2018 23:27

Aha! Some lovely ideas, definitely. You have made me pine for my nice wooden shelves that I wanted, but the plumber talked me out of and so I got glass instead.

I think the round mirror has to go, so that I put in something angular Sad

TheDishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 24/07/2018 23:35

I think round and rectangle look Okay, I don't think it looks odd. It doesn't look quite right because the wall isn't painted and there's no picture on the frame but I think once it's finished it will look nice. But portrait is definitely best!

Realistically if you put a round mirror in you can't put more round things because that would look like a weird boat so you have to put square things on walls next to round mirrors and I think it looks completely fine

alc3254 · 24/07/2018 23:38

I would be tempted to make it a feature and turn it into a frame. Embrace it.
