Front door colours

We last painted our front door about 14 years ago and it’s looking a bit tired and scruffy now. It’s currently sage green (along with half the other houses in the road ...) and I fancy a change. It’s a late Victorian semi in southwest London. The door has beautiful stained glass panels and there’s an original checkerboard tile path leading up to it. What colours would be good (especially as we’re hoping to move next summer)?

I’ve painted my Victorian semi’s front door farrow and ball downpipe. It’s a dark grey colour. Have painted the frame as well and am very pleased. Can post pic if you would like?

Red! If it goes with the brickwork and general outside look. I think it looks great on period properties.

I have this lovely first world dilemma at the moment as well. Edwardian property, can’t decide between F&B Calke green, a nice strong red or - wild card - some sort of pink...

Would pink work with red brick? Like a pomegranate pink.

We have a chalky blue, f and b but I can't remember the name. Looks lovely with our cream facade.

Spicylolly · 28/04/2018 11:46

I love blues and greys, which is what I wanted, DH didn't so we went with black, it's lovely and smart but shows up ALL the dirt grrrrrrr

MoonshineBabe · 28/04/2018 14:21

We went for black @spicylolly and have that problem too. Wish I'd gone with my gut and had red!

GetAwayFromHer · 28/04/2018 14:25

Mine is Dulux Mulberry Burst. An Aubergine Colour. It's cheerful, classy and a but more 'hello!!!" than all the tasteful greys and sages around.

Just make sure whatever you choose fits with the nextdoor neighbour's as it can spoil the look otherwise

@Spicylolly I've just bought black gloss for the front door but I'm too afraid to actually paint it. Is yours gloss or satin?

friskybivalves · 28/04/2018 14:29

We had scarlet and I really didn't like it. Went for F&B green smoke - dark mix between grey, green and black. Really smart. Well we think so!

TrueBlue22 · 28/04/2018 14:32

I would go for farrow and ball stiffkey blue or little greene mister David (yellow)

wonkylegs · 28/04/2018 14:45

Some lovely inspiration here www.grandvictorian.co.uk/the-grand-victorian - scroll down to bottom to see them

I've had black, dark grey and now have pillar box red - all have been fab.

joystir59 · 28/04/2018 14:47

You have to be careful that the red you choose isn't garish (scarlet) or it can look tacky rather than rich

MillStone · 28/04/2018 15:22

What colour is the checkerboard patch and stained glass window?

Spicylolly · 28/04/2018 18:09

Sluttybutty it's a composite door, I think it's more of a gloss as its very shiny, next door have a Matt black front door and out the corner of your eye it looks like theyve left the door open haha drives me potty

dontcallmelen · 28/04/2018 18:33

I have f&b Brinjal which is a marooney red, looks nice with the stained glass on the door, next time though I am going for yellow or purple.

SluttyButty · 28/04/2018 18:41

Thanks Spicy ,when this grim weather buggers off I might just get over my fear and paint it black then. My df suggested oxford blue as a more conventional colour. Most of my neighbours have shades of blue or grey (I love grey but not on doors and we've put grey slate outside the front so it might look too much) so I keep thinking I'm going to stick out like a sore thumb Confused

Katurah · 28/04/2018 18:50

We have just painted our front door F&B India Yellow - looks beautiful. We are selling the house and it sold in under 2 weeks. The 4 bidders all commented on how much they loved the door!

As a postie I see a lot of front doors and yellow is my favourite. It's impossible not to feel a little bit happier when you see a yellow front door. Sage green, muted blues and grey are everywhere.

dontcallmelen · 28/04/2018 19:21

@Katurah that’s lovely, I wish I had gone for the yellow when I painted my door I might do it in the summer my front door has been blue, black sage green, dark grey & maroony red😳

SwedishEdith · 28/04/2018 19:31

Red. I think I used this one Crown Flame Red. It was perfect. Then I sold the house and the new owner painted it dark blue. The red looked better. Grin

Thumbcat

That's interesting. I would have chosen yellow but nextdoor has green and the two looked horrible together. I wanted to choose something that makes people smile. Glad to hear it matters to people Smile

Hi - we've just built a large neo Georgian. Front door colour is Farrow Hague blue with a large copper knocker .....the contrast is great, the colour is awesome. Min 2 coats needed...

noitsnotteatimeyet · 29/04/2018 09:02

Thanks for the suggestions. I can see that yellow would be very cheerful but next door’s is bright red and I think it would look a bit Hmm. The path is black and white checkerboard and the stained glass is predominantly green/red (photo from inside as it’s so gloomy today you can’t really see the colours from outside). Dh wants black (meh) and I definitely don’t want another muted shade of green...

That door is beautiful! I think black or dark charcoal would really make it pop. It has to be a traditional shade whatever you go with as modern colours would compete with the stained glass.

NotAgainYoda · 30/04/2018 19:56

I agree. The windows are the star with that door, so a pretty sober colour would work best
