I'm liking the sound of all these punctual builders. Send them my way when you're done with them!

Asbestos survey. Anyone had one? I think we need to get one - house was built in 1955. I've emailed a few surveyors for quotes, but wondering if I should wait till I have a builder and see if they have a preferred surveyor.

Threesocks · 06/06/2018 12:46

@Hopefully we had an asbestos survey. The builder didn't care who did it!! Went with a firm recommended by our architect in the end.

Doesn't seem to be compulsory for us, but I'm going to go for it - saves the builders discovering some in week 1 and the build grinding to a complete halt I suppose!

Ilovechocolatetoomuch · 06/06/2018 19:38

Our builder are here 7:30-6 everyday. Including some Saturday it does get a bit draining but I am 38 weeks pregnant so I want it done fast lol.

Kimlek · 06/06/2018 19:49

Hello all! Something I didn’t ask my builders is what their hours would be. Had assumed 8am til 4pm but will now check not that it matters but would be good for them to arrive as I leave with kids and depart as kids return.
Looks like we could be starting in a couple of weeks! So through the school holidays which isn’t ideal! But I guess if it’s to be done by Xmas they need to start ASAP. If anyone knows of anyone wanting a house sitter over the school hols please send them my way!

Ilovechocolatetoomuch · 06/06/2018 21:04

I need advice on how to deal with this.
Came home today and builders have been into my makeshift kitchen/ study (which was door shut dust guard zipped up) taken the milk out my fridge, used it all and used my microwave to make a burger leaving rubbish on the side. Obviously I don't want to upset them or slow them down by pissing them off but seriously is this normal? Oh and been in my food cupboard in said room to get plate out for said burger.
I guess it's my fault for heating it up for him the other day when he asked me nicely.

parkingplonkas · 06/06/2018 21:07

Hello! Anyone had any planning issues? Any refusals? What did you do?

MrsBlondie · 06/06/2018 22:25

our builder's were usually 8.30-3 as had kids. TBH I hated them any later as want house back and to clear up. They worked every Saturday and the Bank holiday.

I ilovechoc we did leave them biscuits and kettle and mugs etc. They helped themselves to our milk but only as we said they could. They didn't leave a mess food wise. Tricky one.

MrsBlondie · 06/06/2018 22:26

ps are your neighbours not cross about noise if they start 7.30am?! Not sure what hours are allowed week days though so maybe that's the earliest it's ok Smile

Ilovechocolatetoomuch · 06/06/2018 22:50

I would prefer them at 8:30 I really would give me a lay in. However I am grateful for the break neck speed they are working at so I can't complain about 7:30.
I am praying the carpenter hurries up as he is the main noise culprit with his radio and drilling. I also suspect he is the one who broke into my mini kitchen!

Kimlek · 06/06/2018 23:54

Ah chocolate that is tricky. Previously I’ve got tea, coffee, tons of sugar, mugs etc out for them to use. But also had a renovation where they had their own brew up room on site (a container really). The latter was fab! Think I’d let it go if I were you. But if you can put a few bits together it’s worth it!

MrsBlondie · 07/06/2018 09:31

Yes never ending supply of biscuits always good. Tesco own work just fine etc! Mine ate a tonne a day lol!

MrsBlondie · 07/06/2018 09:31

We cant have our karndean laid in the new room yet Sad the cement is too wet still. coming back to check again in 2 weeks. So annoying but has to be done.

Final building inspection taking place next week.

Kimlek · 07/06/2018 09:43

Have you got any photos blondie? Also how long has it taken so far and I’m guessing you’ve been living in?

MrsBlondie · 07/06/2018 11:02

Yes we've lived in the whole time. Builders started mid-February and kitchen was fitted about 2 weeks ago. Took about 3 months in all for the build (extension, bricking up lounge and turning downstairs toilet into a toilet and shower room).

I can add pictures if people want to see.

DustandRubble · 07/06/2018 11:13

We always want pics!

My builders provide their own drinks & food. I have got them stuff occasionally but half of them have high blood pressure so they eat carefully.

I got round the back to see our extension properly today. It needs a roof but it looks like something now. I am so happy. And today the unfinished bits in the upstairs bathroom are being fixed. Including the wallpaper that they screwed up the first time.

Pic of shell attached.

Please do add pics :)

Great progress Dust

Kimlek · 07/06/2018 12:54

3 months is good isn’t it Blondie? Think we’re looking at 6. Yes! Everyone photos!

Whattodowithaminute · 07/06/2018 18:03

mrsblondie I think we started at the same time... we still haven’t made any significant progress apart from steels going in so you’ve all done a great job!

Threesocks · 07/06/2018 18:35

We are on week 4 ... new roof on main house very nearly done and approx 60% of the render on the main house stripped off. So the house looks a little sad, but with a great roof!!

Next stage will be the demo of the old extension and starting work on the new extension. Very happy so far. Only about another 5months to go 🙈

Roof look great socks
How long does the scaffold take to put up?

Hopefully · 08/06/2018 06:23

Socks well your roof looks great!

Dust that must be so pleasing to see - proper real progress!

MrsBlondie annoying that you have to wait for your floors, but you're getting there.

Loving the pics, keep 'em coming.

Nothing wildly exciting to report here, last few bits and bobs coming together for planning application. Need to chase local planners today regarding the wildlife survey - we are a mid terrace dormer bungalow in a town, and I just can't get a straight answer about how in depth the survey needs to be (or indeed whether it needs to exist, or if a statement on the application will do).

Threesocks · 08/06/2018 06:40

@Kimlek our scaffold took about a day to put up - it's on all 4 sides of the house and is pretty high!

Never heard of having to have a wide life survey for planing. We didn't need one and we are in the countryside with load of wildlife around!!

Hope everyone continues to make progress!
