Garage conversion window

Can I have honest thoughts on this window that just been put in our garage conversion. I’m concerned it looks out of place. We intend to swap all the glass out for plain non cross design in future.

It needs turning round 90 degrees at least! I don't think the style is right, it needs echo the windows in the rest of the house.

I wouldn’t be happy with it. It needs to match your other windows

Um, I actually think it is fine but then I really don't like the crosses on your other windows so maybe that is clouding my judgement.

The proportions look wrong to me. The other windows are all single/double/triple of the same width sections.

Yes I agree. I’m going to speak to the builder. The crosses on the widows will be going when we can afford it!

It doesn't Seem to be the same proportions, your other windows are 1/3 2/3 3/3 wide , but this looks like it's 5/6 iyswim. To blend in it needs to be 3/3 i.e. Same width as other downstairs window.

At the very least, the small section needs to match the sections on the other windows. It's the narrowness of the small section that looks most off.

The proportions are wrong. The other windows give the house character and reallly do not need changing. Just plain ones will make it a plain house. Two windows in the garage that match the front window to the left of the front door would be better and make the conversion seemless and in keeping with the rest of the house.

The builders'window is awful. Did you not agree with them what window was required? Matching is usually a criteria.

I like the cross windows.

I like your window style and hope to swap to that style in the future

Having said that, we’re in a very similar position of hating the existing windows and getting a garage conversion done. We opted for one more of the hated type to blend it perfectly with the rest of the property.

We plan to swap all the windows in one go in a few years but didn’t want on sticking out like a sore thumb in the meantime.

@bubblesbuddy so do you mean one window but split 50/50? I think I just have to make a choice about the split - I can’t change the style completely at this point. This is giving me the shakes! So stressful. The architect visited and just said he thinks it’s fine. He would just change the large upstairs one to 3 3rds at some point!

Your other windows go wth the style of the house and the porch in articular. I think the new window needs to match the old windows.

If you still want to change the windows in the future then change them all at the same time.

I too think the existing Windows are fine and suit the house. The garage conversion should have a window the same as the larger bedroom window (top left of picture.).

A lot of money to spend as I think your existing window give character to your house. It will look plain without the cross bits. I'd just get new window to match them. All matching and save money.

To my mind, there are 2 things wrong with the new window vs. the existing.

1. As pointed out by others, the proportions of the new window are wrong. All your existing's are split 50-50 or 33-33-33. The new should match.

1. The biggest issue for me is that the frame of your new window doesn't match. From the photo, it looks like your existing windows are high quality flush casements, whereas the new window is a cheap storm-proof style. You can tell from looking at the outside which is the 'opening' part - you can't on your existing windows.

If you really are going to the expense of changing the other windows in your house, think about the style you will end up and choose a new garage window to match.

I'm in the club of liking the cross design I'm afraid, but regardless the attached is the sort of thing I think you might look to achieve (excuse my poor photo editing)

@parkview094 thanks this is really helping. Can you tell me, have you widened the window to make room for the bigger 3 pane window? I'm just bracing my self for the builder talk!

When we had our double garage conversion done we had a 3/3/3 style window on the other side of the front door so we matched in the 2 new windows as 3/3/3s.

Your builder/architect should have either matched it in to the 2/2 or more likely the 3/3/3.

Plus you are missing the decorative top from over the new window which is why it sticks out like a sore thumb. We have stone lintels (modern like yours but without the different coloured brick) and we had that matched in too.

In the long run if you are removing the plastic beading from the rest of the house you need the garage conversion window to be the new this is what I want style and then match in to that.

But I would have stipulated the decorative top.

Yes I hadn't thought of the stone lintels. So I'm going to ask the builder to match the lintel at the top and make the window wider to accommodate the 3/3/3 as per the upstairs front left window.

@SnowBallsAreHere do you mean match as in make the window quite a bit smaller or do you just mean make it a 50/50 match?

Doesn't match the others. And if I'm being brutally honest - I prefer the other/original windows to the new one.

When you live in a "new" build house the windows are pretty much the same sizes.

ie on my house I now have 4 of the 3/3/3 windows, 3 of the 2/2 windows and then 3 singles (lounge, bathroom, en-suite, I have a french door bay window in the lounge too.)

Anything that varies from that does not blend in and screams garage conversion.

The 50/50 split wouldn't work because the new windows and the upstairs window are not the same size.

When you live on an estate like this and the houses are similar designs any new stuff stands out unless it is done well. For me I would want the 3/3/3 if that would fit.

I do agree with the decorative top not having enough room due to the original header bricks from when it was a garage door.

Your house is very similar to mine, in fact I could guess that the downstairs room is your lounge (mine is a dining room) but your upstairs is possibly the same, so master bedroom, en-suite and bedroom 4? The only difference is my dining room had the 3/3/3 as did the master.

Yes @PineConesAplenty exactly right. I would like the 3/3/3 but it's just if we've come too far for that to be an option now. I'll discuss tomorrow with the builder. The architect came today and said it looked fine! It's all very stressful, particularly as my husband thinks I'm being over the top and it doesn't matter
