Where do you live and what would you recommend about it?

I live in West Yorkshire, in a smallish village on the edge of the peak district and would recommend the beautiful views of the hills and moors, and the fact that there's a train station and a good range of shops including a small supermarket within walking distance. How about you?

We live in South Sutton (zone 5 in London). Moved here after a lot of research and were drawn by the following:
-a very leafy and safe area with large houses that are very cheap by London standards
-excellent transport links into central London as well as 20mins to the Surrey Hills and 1h to the beach + some open countryside within walking distance
-highest attaining state schools in the country
-a very unpretentious area

I live in the Ribble Valley in E Lancs, small market town close to the N Yorks border.

Pros: Beautiful countryside, nice friendly people, train station, good schools, 6 supermarkets & some excellent restaurants & independent shops

Cons: Rains a lot, train service relatively limited, buses not much better, takes bloody ages to get to a motorway (& now they're building hundreds of new houses but with no investment in infrastructure that will only get worse )

West Yorkshire here too
Halfway between Leeds and Manchester so lots going on
Cheap houses, good schools ( Private one not too expensive and State ones ok)
Close to lovely countryside with great walks
Multi cultural
Lovely friendly people

South-east Cornwall - great if you like an outdoors lifestyle. Beaches, coast path, all sorts of outdoorsy stuff going on. Good food to be had if you can afford it.

Downsides: no jobs. If you do have a job, the pay is well below the industry average. Public transport is poor outside of main hubs. Miles from anywhere (though this is partly why I like it). Housing is expensive especially in coastal areas so all the poor folk live in the grim middle. Schools and colleges are a mixed bag - some excellent, some crap. Big heroin problem in some towns.

Brighton. Beautiful, between sea and South Downs, fun loving and lively city with lots going on, easy to get to London. But housing almost London prices, no parking, and not easy to get local jobs - many people commute to London.

DidI whereabouts in Cambridgeshire are you?

We live just outside Cambridge.

Pros: Lovely village, good pub and village shop. Fantastic school. Cambridge is 20 minutes away and has theatres, cinemas, concerts, good shopping. I can also be in London within an hour of leaving my house.

Downside: 90 minutes minimum to the coast and crap traffic into Cambridge in the rush hour. But the positives far outweigh the negatives.

I recently moved to Rossendale which is a little town in East Lancashire.

Pros: stunning hilly views, good house prices, shops close by, loads of places to walk, quaint cobbled streets

Cons: rains a lot, traffic can build up at weekends, parking can be a bit of a nightmare during the week due to a service at the end of the street and on Saturdays due to the market nearby.

Emma I live just outside Cambridge.

It's flat. The wind comes from Siberia. And every day when I sit in my car in the car park that is the A14, able to see the curvature of the earth, I can't get a phone signal for love not money.

Still, when I retire I will really appreciate living somewhere with hills and moving water.

South West London.

Great tube and train links. Very central really, quick into London and everything in the middle. This particular area is very diverse and has a lot of shops, restaurants, bars, cafes, cinemas etc. and a lot of people who care about the area.

Cons - v expensive as most people really like it! Traffic noise, and pollution.

South Wales - fab city, 15 mins from the beach, 15 mins from the mountains, great shopping, good events and lovely people.

You couldn't drag me away if you tried and I commute some ungodly number of hours to stay here. Love it

The Wirral. It's just been Voted 3rd best place to live in the UK.

Pros. It's a peninsula so plenty of beaches, seaside towns. You can cycle round it easily. A good proportion of it is country park. It's easy commutable distance from Liverpool, Chester & Manchester. This is good for both jobs and leisure, though there is plenty you can do locally. Good schools, inc some of the best grammar schools in the country. You can still find reasonably priced houses here, and they tend to be big!
Good public transport as well served by buses, ferry's & also connected to the Merseyrail system. Close to North Wales and Cheshire for day trips.

Cons. Whilst some parts are staggeringly affluent, there are pockets of deep depravation. The contrast here seems more noticeable than in other places (I've found).

My town faces the Irish Sea. It can be very, very windy.

I love it!

Brighton. The sea and lots of gays.

AllTheWittyNamesAreGone Reading here too, It does have everything you need in the town centre though, and I like the fact there's plenty of restaurants in one place But that's about all.

OP, also W Yorks, sounds like not far from you! I was coming on to recommend this area.

Lake District

Pros: Breathtaking scenery everywhere, relaxed pace of life with outdoorsy feel, low crime rate, quite a lot of culture for a rural area, great restaurants not that I can afford them , not too remote - 30 mins frrom the M6 and West Coast Main Line

Cons: Lots of traffic during holiday periods, housing problems due to number of holiday homes, a bit wet , I spend a lot of time being a taxi to my kids

I grew up in the Wirral and still think how lovely it is when I go back to visit.

East coast.
Good- Beach and countryside very near, convenient shops, cheap property, flat so easy to cycle :-)
Bad- quite insular, completely geographically cut off from the rest of the country

North Essex. I'm mixed. It's okay but I quite like being outdoors and don't feel without driving there's much here. It's a naice area with nice schools etc though.

East coast
Cheap housing
Good beaches
Good quality restaurants at affordable prices
Decent transport links...but not brilliant
If you're in a queue of 6 cars...you're in a traffic jam
Friendly people
Some decent schools
Good sports facilities

We're in a village just West of Cambridge. I love the easy access to Cambridge and all it has to offer. I'd like prettier countryside though!

I live in York, about a mile from the city centre (Holgate)

Pros of my area: Very nice, safe, friendly area with lovely houses (lots of Victorian and Georgian houses) and a fantastic park.
I'm a mile from a small high street which has everything I need and a mile in the other direction from York city centre.
I'm about half a mile from the train station and there are regular trains all over the place.

Pros of the city: York is completely beautiful and has lots to see and do.
There's always something going on whether it's a public lecture at the university or a Viking festival.
There's a tonne of restaurants and pubs so it's easy to entertain friends and family when they visit.

Cons: Moving from down south, I have found some people in the north to be really quite rude about the north/south divide and southerners in general. I find this very odd but it's never stopped me settling down here.
York is over-run with tourists in the summer and around Christmas which makes it very hard to just nip into town. On the other hand, I recognise that it's because of the tourists we have so many lovely restaurants.
However, because York is such a lovely place with so many nice places to eat, friends/family always want to come and stay!
The stag/hen parties that take over York city centre from Saturday lunch time onwards really ruin the city, particularly certain areas where their pubs are. I think York could be a much more family-friendly city with a European drinking/eating vibe if it wasn't for these big groups.
The races is also another massive issue. For several weekends a year, the city centre is a no-go zone as it gets taken over by race goers who just seem to want to come, get pissed, vomit everywhere and have a fight. The Ebor festival in August is like a dystopian future.
