Would a matt kitchen date less than gloss?

We have a gloss kitchen on order from DIY kitchens but have until next week to change to a different style if we want.

After reading the other thread about what styles will date, I'm now getting cold feet.

Not keen on Shaker or in-frame and we like the fact that acrylic faced mdf (gloss) is easy to clean and hardwearing - but would a painted slab kitchen be less dated in a few years' time?

What's the verdict please?

I've just had a Matt kitchen installed and I think it does look more modern, it is also a bit easier to keep clean as you don't see the finger prints like you do on gloss. They wipe down just the same.

I am not keen on the colour of the second kitchen though, it might be my phone but it looks a bit yellowy. The colour of the first one was nicer in my opinion.

As you are going with a slab front a lot of how it will look/date I think will be down to the colour and choice of handles and worktops/tiles etc. (no metro tiles then apparently!) that you choose to go with it rather than the gloss/Matt aspect I think.

Matt shows fingerprints much more, just look in a kitchen showroom.

I think gloss already looks dated, but that might just be because I hate gloss. I'm not keen on the colour either - sorry!

Shiny always looks naff in my eyes, except for features such as tiles.

The first is greyish, so already dated.

The colour of the second is lovely, as is the design. It does not go with that grey paint, though. Cream shades are more adaptable to other colours hence the appeal of magnolia for so long, a good foil for a wide range of colours. Grey less so.

I prefer the second but it's impossible to know where fashions are going to go/what will look dated. So I'd just go with what you love.

I really dislike gloss as I feel that it has been done already so people are moving towards Matt again.

The second kitchen colour is a bit too cream though? Much prefer the colour of the first one.

I love the second kitchen. I think the worktops/handles etc keep a kitchen from looking dated- and they can be changed in 5-10 years if that's the case. I'm not a fan of gloss though personally.

I'm looking to get the second kitchen in white. Going to the showroom on Friday to have a good look. I'm not a fan of gloss though and hate that there are hardly any matt white kitchens out there.

I personally prefer a Matt kitchen but I think they are both pretty modern (hard to date) and if Gloss & Matt were to date then they would do equally really.

My kitchen is pretty much your second one, I didn't choose it (new build and it was already in) but I like it a lot. It's very neutral and you can add colour with paint or tiles. I have sage green metro tiles though so what do I know about style!

I hate the gloss ones, they just look cheap and a bit 'buy to let' to me. I like the colour of yours though.

I think it depends so much what other stuff you're putting with it. A high gloss white kitchen with uncompromising modernism is great. A high gloss white kitchen full of the detritus of everyday life, not so much.

I'm not keen on the off-white colours around at the moment - I suspect they will date faster than the finish, tbh.

Thanks for all your thoughts - keep them coming, especially as we are thinking about moving in about 5 years' time, so want to make it marketable.

Gloss is lovely and I prefer the first kitchen, if you see them in real life, we had a look at a kitchen show room. they aren't super shiny things they simply have a nice sheen to them and they clean easier. I'd go for the one you planned.

What dates a kitchen is when it looks old and knackered and gloss is easier to clean than Matt it should last longer. Gloss also reflects the light where as Matt absorbs. I think you made the right choice.

I'm not sure how many people responding have looked at gloss kitchens in real life, and the worktops complete the look depending on what you go for. I suspect it's the word "gloss" that puts people off. Because the reality is not in your face or anything from what we could see.

I really wouldn't pay too much attention to posters' views as to what will/won't date on here - skinny jeans were a massive no-no and consigned to the wilderness a few years ago! Gloss kitchens and grey colour schemes will remain hugely popular - and rightly so - for decades for the simple reason they look great, go with everything and are flattering in any home. I'd stick with your first choice; it's your kitchen and your taste :)

I think I would go for the painted finish - not keen on the cornflower its quite 'cold' I like lamp room (but a not fashionable) it can be quite greeny depending on light..as could the mussel - Vanilla looks quite yellow...
for a neutral think I would do Alabaster or cashmere if you don't want white...

Agree with Annie, I wouldn't really pay much attention, the reality is gloss kitchens are hugely popular outsith mumsnet and will likely stay that way for a long time, but either way no one can predict it. It's really personal taste. I think if arguing about what will or will not date it's arguable that Matt has already dated and gloss is the new preference.

Go with what you actually think will look good in your kitchen , gloss, in my case is not really glossy just shiny and it reflects light so well in what could be a dark room. I find it really easy to keep clean. BUT I would avoid matt work tops like the plague, they show every tiny mark, water spot etc and even when washed down you need to go over them really well to dry them off or you can see the wipe marks. - I have now learned my lesson but as I spent mega money on the kitchen being remodelled then I shall have to put up with the workstops for a long time yet.

We just fitted a new kitchen last month which we chose after seeing a cashmere kitchen in a showroom as I loved the colour. We went for gloss and so far haven't found it hard to keep clean, just a wipe with a microfibre cloth. I love my new kitchen.
