Anaglypta wallpaper - am I mad?

I have a Victorian house and I'm thinking of putting a dado rail and anaglypta under it in the hall, up the stairs and on the landing.

I would paint the paper in a darker shade of the wall above. Probably light grey or maybe a pale blue. I might put white on top. It's a dark space.

Is this madness? Are people still scraping this stuff off walls?

People are but I follow some very stylish people on Instagram who have put it up and it looks amazing! Will find a link.

As an example.

Ooh thank you that would be great. I found some stuff on Pinterest but there were very few hallways and most looked like museums rather than chic homes.

I like that a lot. I think it might be too bold for my space but I like the clean line. Maybe I should be bolder?

No I don't think you are mad. It's very cool in period houses I would definitely do it under the dado rail and paint it a dark smokey grey or dark green/blue.

Wow that's brilliant news. I was originally going to paper the whole thing but thought it would be a bit much. I am very good at papering.

I'm coming round to bright white on top and bold on the bottom.

Part of me is drawn to that very dark green that was traditionally used... but I'm not convinced.

Dh will think I'm mad but he also knows it's just best to let me get on with it Grin

I personally wouldn't, but only because I live in a Victorian terrace and we are still scraping the bastard stuff off (ours is probably from the 70s/80s though and nowhere near as 'tasteful' as the pic dyne posted).

It seems to have come back into fashion though. Like pp's I've seen it on IG, and the ones I've seen look lovely. Painted darkish colours is the way to go.

Anaglypta is great. The vintage house I lived in years ago had it in every room. It was brilliant, so versatile. The only thing I would say is, what happens when you hit the ceiling? I can't remember.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 19/03/2017 16:32

I'm only going up to the dado rail. Not least because I would need a scaffold to do the bit above the stairs.

Do it! Some other good examples here.

Sounds like my house. I have darkish co!our below dado and an off white above. I think it looks classy and the anaglypta has worn wonderfully... Been up twenty years and just gets reemulsioned.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 19/03/2017 23:07

I have ordered three samples: a traditional design with a rose motif; leaf shaped relief and a panel design.

I'm leaning towards something very traditional colour wise for the bottom (sludge green/dark blue/pale blue/golden yellow) or more contemporary (grey, apple green, grey blue, coral). Still thinking white on top. Dado same colour as anaglypta.

I'll need to retile the floor and change the stair carpet. When I get round to it!

I've done 2 walls in my living room with it and painted it dark. I'll take some photos tomorrow.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 19/03/2017 23:18

That would be great.

I told dh. He said "do you mean like the stuff we scraped off dd's bedroom that you described as Satan's glue?".

We have it in our Edwardian hallway under the dado rail. We've painted the hallway the same colour above and below the rail but the wallpaper really makes the bottom half stand out

Go for it

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 20/03/2017 22:01

I'm quite keen to have a look at the samples :)

My samples have arrived! I think I like the leaf one best.

Just need to make a decision about colours.

Please post pics when you have done it. Would love to see what you decide on.

Sorry I forgot about this thread, I think there's random photos on my phone of one of the walls, I'll look now.

Motherwithflaws · 28/03/2017 19:03

I have the cottage garden anaglypta painted F&B railings

Ignore random runner, I was comparing the colours next to each other.

Under the dado it looks a bit like traditional lincrusta, but without the £264 a roll price tag and not quite as beautiful I'm not keen on it up to the ceiling though.
