How often have you moved house?

halfdoneharris · 12/01/2017 17:15

I have been in my home for just over 3 years and have started contacting estate agents to value it for sale. Our reasons to move are that we would prefer a livelier area, and we plan to move to a nearby market town - even though I absolutely love our house.

Before this house we lived in a house for 3 years, and before that a flat for 3 years before selling.
Do I sound like I'm moving too much and getting itchy feet?

I absolutely love our house

Are you sure you want to move?

halfdoneharris · 12/01/2017 18:33

Yes I think so. We have done loads of work to our house but we always have to get in the car for nights out and rob the shops etc. I fancy somewhere that is walkable to the shops, perhaps another doer upper to add value, my daughter wouldn't need to change schools but a house in the nearby area would definitely be a downsize to what we have now.

Go to - not rob the shops!

When. I was renting I lived in 14 places in 10 years.

Strokethefurrywall · 12/01/2017 18:37

If it makes you feel better, I moved 6 times in the first 4 years I was on this island (Caribbean) and then DH and I bought our first home when we got married, stayed for about 18 months and then rented it to move into another, larger property, had DS2 then put a deposit down on our dream home which we had to wait to be built and between February 2016 and November 2016 we moved a mentally and emotionally challenging 5 times until we finally got the keys to our new home.

So basically the longest time I've been in one place has been about 2 years.

I never want to move house again Grin

twofloorsup · 12/01/2017 21:22

19 times in 24 years.
That's quite a lot isn't it ! Shock

Palomb · 12/01/2017 22:00

As an proper adult, once - 3 bed semi to 3 bed detached. This is our forever home so hopefully we'll not move again. Moving is absolutely hateful. I'd be on a huge amount of medication if I had to do it 19 times in 24 years 😲

SternlyVoice · 12/01/2017 22:04

17 times in 30 years! Most of those times were the years I was at university, moving countries, and before I had a "proper" job. The last house but one was 3 years, the last house was 10 years and this one we've been in for 18 months and is a keeper!

redfairy · 12/01/2017 22:10

I'm amazed at the amount of times some of you have moved. I bought present home as a 21 yr old in 1987 and am only selling now. Stressed already.

lukasgrahamfan · 13/01/2017 20:12

12 times. I get itchy feet in 4-5 years and usually move every 6 - 6.5 years.

HowardMoonsJazzTrumpet · 13/01/2017 20:16

I moved a lot as a child/young adult and so this is my 36th house (I am early 40's). I have lived in this house for over a decade. We like it here, even though it is a work in progress.

LiefieLiefie · 13/01/2017 20:30

Up to 18yo - 1 house.
18 - 27yo - 11 houses.

I'm excited to stay in one place for a bit longer over the next few years Grin

SausageFarmer · 13/01/2017 20:42

1st home 18months
2nd home 16.5 years
3rd home 3 years
4th home 1 year
5th and current home 4 years to the day

SausageFarmer · 13/01/2017 20:44

(My post is from birth)

OrangeFluff · 13/01/2017 21:43

I lived in the same house as a child until I went to uni (my Mum still lives there).

First rented flat- stayed 6 months and then moved out as it had horrible damp.
Second rented flat- stayed about 5 years and saved up a deposit to buy a house.
Current owned house- been here 2 years, and hope to be here for about 10 years altogether and have a family. It's a good sized family house, but its just a starter, definitely not our forever home.

I hate moving so really don't want to do it too often!

Flambola · 14/01/2017 01:13

If I don't count under-18 then I've moved 7 times. Rented prior to buying this one and I never want to move again. I hate it. So much.

I'm 31.

Bloodybridget · 14/01/2017 03:42

I'm in my 60s and am in my fifth home. Hope no more than one more move.

Meffy · 14/01/2017 03:50

I've moved 11 times in my lifetime ( I'm 21+19)
We are now in forever home with 3 DC. Have only moved once with DC!

Pluto30 · 14/01/2017 03:56

Before I moved out on my own, I had moved 8 times.

Since being on my own, I have only moved twice. Moved into a rental while DH and I built our house, and then moved to said house. We have no plans of moving anytime soon, as our house was designed to fulfill all our foreseeable future needs.

The thought of moving with several children makes me clench.

CiderwithBuda · 14/01/2017 06:21

15 times including moving countries five times. Been in current house over five years which is longest I've been in any house other than the house I grew up in which my dad still lives in.

Letmesleepalready · 14/01/2017 06:39

This will be my 15th move since birth, 4th in 7/8 years. Doubt this will be our last move as we're renting.
You'd think by now we'd be pros at get rid of stuff before moves, but the amount of boxes we have packed is at an all time high!

bibbitybobbityyhat · 14/01/2017 06:43

Since leaving home at 18 and after spending first year of University in halls, I've lived at 11 different addresses. Lived in my current house for 12 years. Desperate to move again but stamp duty puts it more or less out of the question.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 14/01/2017 06:58

23 homes in 3 countries by the time I was 36.

This house is fab, its mine and DDs post a vile divorce, I am never moving again!

Groovee · 14/01/2017 07:14

Moved age 2 with the family. Then stayed there until I was 19 when she and I bought our own house. We lived there 3 years and have lived here 15 years.

My SIL and BIL moved every 3/4 years and have been in their current house 5 years.

sonlypuppyfat · 14/01/2017 07:20

My DH has only ever lived in two houses me I'm far more worldly I've lived in three!
