21 k for a new garden??

I didn't know where to put this here or gardening...?

Just got a quote for a new garden.. And I'm not sure if I'm just out of touch with what's normal.
I've been abroad for some time.

The quote includes, paving, pergola, new shed and raised planters. It also has a new path, bin store and some fancy Venetian fencing.
It's a new build relatively small but not tiny garden. We already have lots of established plants so none needed.

Is this outrageous? Please can you tell me what you paid or even better if you're a landscaper.

I'm in the south east.

I would get in a number of quotes then at least you have a better idea , it sounds quite a lot to me

Are you just paying for the items, or for design, installation and labour as well?

I've had a few people round but never got as far as a quote as they seem to just disappear

This firm is reputable, professional and very skilled. He came up with lots of great ideas and seemed really knowledgable. My deposit would kick in the designer and I would be provided with 3D images of their proposal.
The quote also includes Astro turf.

He got me really excited and I knew it would be expensive but is it overpriced expensive or a fair price for what I'd be getting???

Good astro turf is very expensive. I looked at cheap naff stuff and that was £30 per square meter.

The garden narrows at its widest it's approx 18 ft

There will be a path from the gate to a 5x8 luxury decking then a path to the bottom of the garden where there will be a patio & pergola.
Up the side will be made shed flat and a shed installed
The other side will be wooden planters and Scottish stone with a stepping path to the front door and a new path at the front.
They are proposing Woodburn set footpath-
Indian sandstone circle and slat fencing(8ft).

Sounds about what I'd expect really...see my post from yesterday 'Garden revamp but worried about neighbours' which really I should have called '25K for a garden?!'

I think when you get a garden designer you have to remember their fees, if they supervise the building work etc then you're also paying them as well as the labourers. And like BengalCatMum says, if you go for more high end things it will add up.

We're in London (which must make it more pricey) and we've had a quote of £10k to do a basic revamp with no real discussion about how we use or could improve the garden...just a bit of decking, new fencing, lawn, new path and garden lighting. But we also had another quote for same sort of thing at £20K!

If you go for a garden designer you'll be paying top price for their expertise, ideas, plans etc. But you may get a nicer, more considered garden that really works for you.

To give some perspective, last year we paid 6.5k for an L shaped patio, raised decking and planters, and drainage in our 7 x 10m garden. We live in the midlands. For the size of your garden and what you want i'd expect to pay around 15k here. Is there a lot of land clearing to be done, and could you save money by designing it yourself?

The gardener has shown me lots of examples of past work and offered to put me in touch with past clients.

Well weve had a large patio, decking walkway and railway sleeper retaining wall going round the walk way for 7k...I designed it...as in I had a plan and drew a sketch! A well known, round these parts, gardener. Was a lot of difficult out for that price...didn't include returning. Garden is about 40 foot by 30 foot

Sounds about right to me as we paid 10k for a huge patio 8 years ago and £900 for a fence 10 years ago.

As with most of these things it's usually labour you pay for.

Sheds can be a fortune so if you're having that and a pergola it starts to mount up.

Have you a got a quote from a handy man type person too rather than a gardening company?

Don't forget a lot of that will be VAT as well.

& 4 grand Astro turf -- when he said 17 I thought it was including vat and then he just casually "and with vat"..and I was lost.

We have so much to do - I'm trying to do as much myself as I can but we have a bit of money saved and I'm trying to figure out what is value added.
I've got a revolving door of trades people and trying to get lots of quotes is exhausting.
The whole package is tempting but I'm afraid to make a mistake with a lot of money that we won't have again any time soon.
