Not sure if this is through right place to ask advice and even though I'm laughing I'm very scared that scared infact I didn't sleep at home last night.

So here's what's happened the neighbour on another street (also does alot of work in his house) told his next door neighbour he seen a mouse in his kitchen. He lady he told then seen one in her back garden and in the grid infront of her house dead afew weeks ago.
No now yes know I have one in my house (I live across a road from them). We are getting our kitchens and bathrooms done by the council to. So everything is boxed up in the living room.

Anyway so my daughter is home alone watching TV Saturday morning and the front door is open. She said she noticed something move and seen it was a little mouse (well it was little with a long tail).
So I got her to shut the livING room door and I would sort something out.

I sent my sister round with traps and she left the living room door open. I then went back with my mum to look for it. (Iv had everyone in there looking)
We hoovered moved the boxes etc. I couldn't stay there so we stayed at my mums last night.

Iv returned to the house today and noticed the mouse had taken food from the trap but it didn't go off ( it wasn't placed correctly ). So now I'm even more scared coz I know it's still in there.

Anyway coz I have no holes In the walls etc does this mean there will more then likely just one mouse?

I was going to stay at a home tonight and get in the girls room (my room in down stairs ) but after reading up they can get up the stait's to? But I don't have carpet on my stairs thou so would it be harder for them to get up?.

I have more traps and sticky traps.

I hate those glue traps Borrow a friends cat for an evening instead.

No advice but sympathy. Just found two cowering in our empty outside bin. Waiting for dh to dispense with.

celeste83 how come? Do they work? There's no cats around here think all the kids have scared them off haha

We had a fairly indestructible mouse for a while. Don't look for big mouseholes like in Tom and Jerry. They can get in teeny holes smaller than a 10p! We got one of those sonic things you plug in and that did the trick in the end.

I have no holes what's so ever. It walked in through the front door, like a smug uninvited guest haha.

Glue traps are inhumane, sometimes the poor mice ends up cheering its feet off in an attempt to escape.

Ohh really I might not use them then don't fancy cleaning that up

Your conventional slam mousetrap is more humane.

Yeah definitely I really didn't think I just want it out of my house so I can go home haha. Iv got 8 traps so that's more then enough for tonight. Hopefully it will be caught tonight and I can go home tomorrow

I'm afraid to say if you see "a" mouse, it can often mean a family. You need to figure out where they are coming in and/or living and this can be tricky. We usually get them in the roof, but we hear them as scrabbling in the walls for example. Don't panic, you prob had them in your garden anyway - our cat is forever bringing them home and he doesn't venture far from our house these days.

I think you're doing the right thing to put traps out where you've seen the mouse. Put them along the edges of the rooms because mice like to stay at the edges. Use decent quality old fashioned traps, not glue traps. Much kinder and, unpleasant as it is to deal with a dead mouse, a half dead, terrified one is much worse.

Also look up on your council website how much it costs to get them to send pest control round. They may well offer a reasonable price which works out about the same as you'd spend on different traps etc, itcs less stressful and you will have an expert to deal with it. But be prepared that it might take a few weeks to sort so I'm not sure how practical it would be to move out for the duration. It's never crossed our minds to move out tbh.

Do you know it's mice and not rats? You can tell from the droppings.

We often have mice, two old fashioned traps set in the pantry at all times and one under the kitchen units.

Don't bother with "humane" varieties.

We had a mouse in our house about a year ago. We used a humane trap, caught it on the first night and released it completely unharmed into a local park about two miles away - far enough that it wouldn't find its way back. I suppose it might have been gobbled up that night but at least it had a fighting chance.

Everyone said there'd be more where that came from but we've had nothing more since.

PlotterOfPlots ok my daughter said the front door was open but now she's saying it wasn't. She said it was small brown and had a long tail.
So there won't be only one ever is that not possible at all?
Iv got workmen back in tomorrow and I'm going to go mad they are a day behide and maybe this could of been avoided if they fit the kitchens and bathrooms on time.
I'm going back when my mums back from work to set my traps.
How many in a family roughly?

If I catch one I catch a minimum of four the same week generally. Rural location.

MagicalMrsMistoffelees this is what I'm thinking I thought they had a sender? One that wold go for food and if some found then more come. I'm hoping it came in from the front door as I thought in the first place since its been fully open since the kids broke up from school.

Rural does that mean like out of public area? I live near a park but across a road there is a row of victorain houses that the park backs on to then a busy road then my house is on an estate

I haven't seen any droppings anywhere as Saturday is the first time it's been seen. When I cleared the kitchen out I didn't see anything so I'm assuming it's only just come?

It might be one. I hope it is, and if it did come in randomly through the front door you have some hope. But the point is not to make you feel icky about your house, but to suggest you keep laying the traps until you have a few catch-free nights. Otherwise it's like stopping nit combing after you've caught your first nit. You might just have one nit, but it's a much more effective strategy to assume there are more.

You don't know if you have a mouse size hole in the wall behind your kitchen cupboards or your washing machine, etc. Could come in somewhere like that.

I had one mouse the other week, cat brought it in. Was in our bedroom and I didn't sleep all night. It was climbing up the front of the chest of drawers, running about on top of my bedside table, got on the dressing table and was knocking makeup over. They're good at climbing ime. I got a trap the next day with peanut butter on it and it was game over within ten. Minutes.

Rentokill have redesigned the snap trap and theirs is by far the eat trap you will find. It's red and black in colour.

Fast, effective, easy to set, no chance of food getting eaten without trap going off, safer for your fingers when setting the trap.
