Painting woes, what am I doing wrong? please help (pic)

F&B paint applied with a new 3" brush. Wall has three coats very carefully applied. At time of application it looked perfect. This morning it looks streaky. No previous colour 'grins' through, it just looks like I've missed bits when I know I checked carefully last night & it looked perfect. Can anyone help?

Was it dark when you finished? It can be very hard to tell in artificial light.

One more coat should do it!

Room was very well lit, it was about 6pm when I did it & right next to 12" bay window.

I use a roller or paint pad, good light helps too. I do it in rows from top to bottom, maybe 8 rows per wall or in sections, depending on size of wall, so when going over the already painted part it hasn't had chance to dry too much.

If you look at the coverage face on there is no shading. It's not like it's light/dark, it's the way it catches the light. I want one smooth coverage. I suspect if I carry on as I have been the next layer will look exactly the same.

I've always had to do multiple coats of F&B, last time I used London Stone and had this same streaky look (although yours looks oddly shiny in places?).

Have you painted it all with the brush?

I find you never get the same coverage with a brush compared to a roller. I suspect one more coat with a roller would finish the job, or perhaps another couple with a brush.

You should rub paint down lightly between coats for a smooth finish.

When using a brush you're supposed to put the brush strokes all over the place (ie not just up/down or left/right) to avoid brush marks. A roller, pad or spray is much easier and gives a much smoother finish.

Maybe sand it lightly with fine sander, then use a roller, brushing is too much in a large area, you won't get a neat finish, matt paint is more forgiving in the finish too.

I also agree with penny. Even if you use a roller now you'll still have the brush marks. Sand the walls down lightly (fine grade sand paper) then use a roller for the last coat.

I agree, you need to sand it back to smooth surface and try again. Make sure there is no trace of any contaminants on the surface, such as traces of old wallpaper paste.
Use a brush only for cutting in the edges. For the remainder of the wall, use a roller.
I wonder also if the paint was applied too thickly. Three thin coats is much better than one thick coat.
If need be, thin the paint very slightly to make it flow better, but don't overdo it; a little water goes a long way.

Another thought, was the paint drying too quickly? Don't have the heating on while you're painting.

The heating was off although I did think the paint was going 'treacly' very quickly. I decided to use a brush as I thought the finish would be better than with a roller. If I paint again it will be my 4th coat!

I've read numerous threads where people say F&B isn't easy to work with and doesn't go on evenly unless you dilute the first coat. Unless you are covering a dark colour two coats should do it I think. I've only used F&B once and I used a roller, as I always do, only using a brush for cutting in.

It looks over-brushed? I only cut in with a brush and use a roller. I don't like F&B paint, B&Q's Valspar is infinitely better (and cheaper and they colour match to anything).

Is it on new plaster? I had the same when I painted onto new plaster that had had a clear sealing coat. I now mix white paint with uni bond to seal new plaster and no longer get steaks.

As others have suggested, a quick rub over with some very fine sandpaper and a final coat with a short nap roller (microfibre probably best) should sort that out. F&B needs a primer step then 2-3 coats IME.

Those of you that get a great result with rollers or pads, can you please recommend a good brand/type?

I'm using these to paint our whole house (in trade white though, not f&b) and they've been great so far.

Wooster rollers, especially their doo-z system are my go to. Also Picasso pro-form chisel brush for cutting in means I don't waste time taping. I can get a coat on a medium room in about an hour to 90 minutes with these two. If you do need tape, frog tape low tack is good. Kip masker for protecting the skirtings/floor makes the job quicker and easier.

What are you painting on to? If a previously painted wall, a short to medium nap microfibre roller best. Do a mist coat (25-33% water) with any contract white emulsion first.

extrahot I use Harris rollers, usually an extending one so I don't have to faff about getting up and down a step.
I also (after sugar soaping) do one coat of white paint before painting a colour - so kind of a primer I suppose.

I would say there may have been wallpaper paste on there - did you remove wallpaper & did you thoroughly sugar soap the wall before painting??
