Small, windowless downstairs loo - what colour should I paint it?

I'm torn between eye-wateringly bright yellow (F&B yellow cake) or F&B Stiffkey blue which is deep indigo.

I like the idea of yellow as a bright colour pop in a windowless room, but then I've also seen some stunning darker cloakrooms.

Floor is a geometric tile in dark blue, white and grey.

Yellow. I did that in my last house and it made a huge difference - it looked bigger and brighter.

Karcheer · 04/10/2015 21:43

I'd definitely go really dark. Would look stunning.

We have F&B Borrowed Light in our windowless loo and it looks great, as it opens the room up and makes it look bright.

Thanks for the replies everyone - Karcheer - do you have a dark painted bathroom? I love the pictures of them when I see them in magazines etc, but wonder how gloomy they'd be in real life...

It is gloomy - it has no window! Never mind. Go with an exciting wallpaper. Something loud that you would never have in any other part of the house. Exotic plants, flowers, something from Designers Guild. Add a chandelier for fun and light. When you go in there it should be "wow". Or do it like a rustic shed with the latest "sawn wood" wallpaper.

We painted ours with glitter effect painr.

I've seen 'em with quite dark lights and lots of mirrors. Takes a bit of planning but the effect was really stunning. Seen something with infinity mirrors in a lift in a modern museum recently. Looked great.

BellaMoo · 05/10/2015 07:27

We recently painted our gloomy magnolia downstairs loo in a deep, rich blue. We've got a big mirror on one wall and silver and white accessories. It looks gorgeous - everyone comments on how lovely it looks.

Littleyellowboo · 05/10/2015 07:39

We've done ours in yellow really pale yellow- also brought 2 battery operated motion lights to go on either wall as its quite a big room they've helped brightern it all up too.

I have just done ours in deep dark blue (hague blue) equivalent.. I took the gamble and very glad I did. Looks great against the white sanitary ware, woodwork etc also have a mirror in there and fair few small pictures on the walls, which the colour sets off.

I adore Dulux moonlight white in dull spaces, otherwise I agree with previous posters suggesting really dark blue with a moroccan style mirror and lighting

Yika · 06/10/2015 19:48

I would go dark. The blue would be nice with the floor tiles.

dynevoran · 06/10/2015 20:02

Definitely dark. This is my dream cloakroom:

I love black-walled bathroom-it provides a great background against which to hang art, for example. I used to live in a house with one and it was stunning. However, it had a window. I am not sure about a black bathroom without a window; but it would probably look fine.

Forestdreams · 06/10/2015 22:29

Ours was a deep royal-ish blue when we moved in. It used to scare small children. It's now much paler. If DH would let me I'd go mad with blue and white toile wallpaper.

swillows · 07/10/2015 08:36

Watching this with interest as we currently have the same issue! Newly installed cloakroom squeezed under stairs. Our initial thought was to have a 360 degrees mural wallpaper of New York e.g. like you're stepping into Times Square but I'm now thinking it won't actually work because you're not far back enough to get perspective on the 'view'. All I know is I want to do something unexpected with it....

Lambzig · 07/10/2015 09:10

I did ours in bronze. Bronze metallic tiles behind the toilet and different on the floor. Dark bronze paint. One wall mirrored to reflect the tiles and the light. It looks like a little jewel box (with a loo in it Grin).

NattyGolfJerkin · 07/10/2015 09:16

Mine is dimity. Pale and interesting dull and conformist

I fancy the wild wallpaper but there is also panelling in there (old house) and it would be too much, I think.

Devora · 07/10/2015 09:59

Yes, go dark! A friend has a windowless downstairs toilet in F&B Brinjal, which looks great. Or how about Little Greene Pearl Colour Dark?

ChinUpChestOut · 07/10/2015 10:05

A friend of mine has gold/bronzey glitter wall paper in her windowless loo. It is STUNNING. I have no idea how much it cost, but it's a small loo so it wouldn't have been too expensive. She has a very pretty light over the mirror and that's it. I want to do this badly in my loo but she visits my house and it would be very obvious that I copied her idea.

Ipanema01 · 07/10/2015 16:06

Love Stiffkey blue and think it could look amazing painted dark. I have a small downstairs bathroom that I'm currently trying to decide whether to paint a really deep, dark blue or go for something very similar to the below very busy wallpaper. The rest of my house is quite stark and I like the idea of a dramatic little room stuck in there somewhere!

I love Stiffkey blue, too - I'd definitely go for that over Yellow Cake.

Racundra · 07/10/2015 16:15

Another vote for really dark blue!

Hiahia · 07/10/2015 20:46

My brand new downstairs loo is Stiffkey Blue, so I would big that up.

pearlgirl · 07/10/2015 21:08

My small windowless downstairs loo is a dark sea-green and I love it.
