How often do you redecorate?

We moved here 12 years ago, did living room, have since done halfway up the stairs (!), sitting room, bedrooms at various stages as kids got older, kitchen had a wall taken out and was redone 7 years ago. I don't really get the thing about redecorating regularly unless its really neessary, though I would love to live in a pristine house, however that's not going to happen with kids and animals.

SO do you redecorate when room is falling apart,or do you have a regular schedule of house improvements?

Every couple of years BUT my dad owns a massive decorating company so we don't actually do it ourselves and it doesn't cost me much

OddBoots · 03/10/2015 21:30

Very rarely, I realise this goes against majority thinking but we got things reasonable when we moved in 14 years ago and will do it again in about 6 years when we want to sell. As long as it is clean, safe and functional I really don't care what it looks like.

IlPorcupinoNilSodomyEst · 03/10/2015 21:35

Oh Nancy you are very lucky! It's only when we start painting that we realise that high ceilings mean it takes an age to paint a room!

Boots we are the same, as long as it's clean and functional we're not really bothered - never upgrade TVs etc until they break, we have some ancient stuff here but it still works ...

Though I took a really cute video of DD dancing recently in her pyjamas, and realised I couldn't put it on FB for relatives abroad, as it really showed up our chipped door frames!

Rarely too! And it still looks good here. Jus about to do hall stairs and landing and it's been up for over 15 years and really don't have to do it, I just fancy a change.

Erm looks around at granny chic decor not very often Blush

We've lived here 2.5 years and haven't tackled a single room.

IlPorcupinoNilSodomyEst · 03/10/2015 22:01

It's just such a pain clearing a room, having stuff all over the house and dust sheets everywhere, I can't be bothered, tbh.

Granny chic rules!

Every couple of years?! Good god!

nancy75 · 03/10/2015 22:10

Roussette - it's mostly painting not wall paper, the whole house can be done in less than a week and because I know the people doing it I just go out and leave them to it

RaphaellaTheSpanishWaterDog · 03/10/2015 22:10

Last couple of houses we only lived in three years before selling, but they were in a pretty bad state (especially the most recent that was unmortgageable) when we purchased, so required full renovation & redecoration immediately but were sold before they needed doing again Grin

Before that we lived in a house for ten years and we redecorated some of the rooms more than once during that time, but as a rule we tend to choose decorating schemes we can live with for some time - in fact we have used the same curtains in the last three houses so opt to decorate around colours/objects we intend to keep long term!

RaphaellaTheSpanishWaterDog · 03/10/2015 22:13

Meant to add, current house has twelve rooms of woodchip on virtually every surface - walls, ceilings, some window recesses and inside cupboards - once that's removed I don't intend to decorate again for a very long time Grin

IlPorcupinoNilSodomyEst · 03/10/2015 22:15

Raphaella, we tend to have very neutral schemes too - somehow we always end up with a goldy colour on the walls and darker curtains. Our first house, we renovated and paint schemes etc, lasted the 9 years we were there! We don't tend to lean on the walls to make them grubby!

I don't really have an answer to this as only just owning again after renting for several years but my parents have just redecorated their living room. In exactly the same wallpaper they used when it was last done, 10 years previous!

lightgreenglass · 03/10/2015 23:16

Every 2 years approximately. I can't stand chipped floors or grubby walls.

Openup41 · 03/10/2015 23:45

Been living in house for over 8 years. Since then we have painted several times and changed flooring in two rooms. Same curtains.

gamerchick · 03/10/2015 23:50

Too much. I've had to stop before the husband started muttering divorce Grin

It's doing my head in though but I promised. I may paint all woodwork at regular intervals when he's at work so he doesn't notice.

bloodyteenagers · 04/10/2015 00:08

At least once a year.
When I moved in I removed every inch of wallpaper and replasteted anything that needed doing.
So now it's a case of opening a tin and painting.
Doesn't take long and I do a room when I get bored of the color.

I also change the layout of rooms constantly hence I never understand how people can wall mount tv's. And my kitchen depresses me because I cannot change the layout.

BackforGood · 04/10/2015 00:21

We've been in our house 12 yrs too, and have recently finished the last room to be decorated.
The thought of it all needing doing together horrifies me, so I try to get a room done each year, to keep on top of things.
Am about to start re-doing one of the first rooms we did.

Roussette · 04/10/2015 08:38

I'm taken aback by every year or two, really I am. My DCs are older and now not home though, could that be why mine looks just fine? Young DCs are probably heavy on walls so it needs doing more often clutching at straws that I'm not a complete slattern

We did our bedroom about 3 years ago, walls, new furnishings, blinds etc... I love it, there are no marks on it, I wouldn't even contemplate doing it again for a number of years..

Once a year or so I just paint over any marks. We have the paint in the garage. It blends in and all looks clean again. Don't have any small kids though.

I paint the outside retaining walls, sheds and fences every year (well the gardener does!)

gingerdad · 04/10/2015 12:19

We do outside every ten years or so.

Inside did the whole house about 7 years ago. Done kids rooms a couple of times. Re-did hall stairs and landing last year as part the loft conversion. Our room needs doing, paint in the shed. Any offers?
