How often do you redecorate?

We moved here 12 years ago, did living room, have since done halfway up the stairs (!), sitting room, bedrooms at various stages as kids got older, kitchen had a wall taken out and was redone 7 years ago. I don't really get the thing about redecorating regularly unless its really neessary, though I would love to live in a pristine house, however that's not going to happen with kids and animals.

SO do you redecorate when room is falling apart,or do you have a regular schedule of house improvements?

When we first moved in it had just been decorated throughout but we still did 4 rooms to our taste. The hallway is next on the list as its looking a bit grubby. Usually do each room every 2-4 years, depending on how much it is used.

I've never decorated. Just stuck with how it was when we moved in until we moved out. Depressing, but renting for you!

But that said, we're having to buy furniture and paint and stuff for the place we are moving to at the end of the year, and I can't imagine ever having enough money to do it regularly, it's costing an absolute bomb Shock So I suspect in future, redecoration will occur when it needs to rather than when I want to.

We haven't redecorated our living / dining area or kitchen since 1996, hall/stairs/landing got reprinted when we had a flood about 10 years ago. Bedrooms all painted and carpeted a few years later, but only DD has had her bedroom redecorated since. Downstairs loo was the most recent, about 8 years ago.

I can't imagine the upheaval of redecorating every few years, it would drive me mad!

Um, about once a decade? I thought that was normal; this thread has been quite the revelation!

We've painted our house white too. White accessorised by muddy paws and the splatterings of three children! Crazy idea that was!

We've lived in each house for 5 years. We have not yet managed to get round every room that needs freshening up since moving in. Re-decorating over our own decorating is further down the line again.

It depends vey much on here you are in life though. When we were newlyweds we did nearly the whole house in 18m, stripping out woodchip, anaglypta and polysytrene ceiling tiles in every room. Now we have kids and we struggle just to paint. It is definitely less of a priority these days, and we have so much more STUFF and so much less time.

When dc were young and destructive, I painted every year, replaced sofas etc. Now I do a full house overhaul with an interior designer friend every five years or so. It's just for a change though, we don't get as much wear and tear anymore.

This is the longest we have ever lived in one house (7 years so far!) and definitely done the most in this house!
I am currently decorating our bedroom as it's the only room that's not been touched.
We tend to decorate when we've had work done in a room- I've had oak floor put in living room so decorated that room then.
Kids rooms have been done every couple of years due to changing tastes- it's only paint!

I do tend to redecorate on a whim much to dh's annoyance!
The hall stairs and landing need doing again and to be honest most of the woodwork like skirting etc could do with a coat of paint!

We lived in old house 8 years and did very little, bit of new flooring and tiling. Very neutral walls so just the odd touch up.

Came into this house 12 months ago and the colours were very strong and not at all to my our taste although luckily the halls and landing were. Every other room has been painted, although only one needed a full wallpaper off and replaster job.

And that's that until it looks grubby or one of the dc want a room change when they get bigger.

suzyrut · 06/10/2015 10:49

All the time but I'd classify it as my hobby and so not really to do with whether it needs decorating. Moved a year and a bit ago, have decorated all rooms except the downstairs loo, done living room twice and now onto the major building work. It was a new build as well so can't even blame the state of it when we moved in Blush

Depends on the room. Hall stairs and landing every 2-3 years because they get grubby. Kitchen and bathrooms about 3-4 and other rooms 5 years or so. Bedrooms don't need doing any more often than this and I usually get someone in to do the sitting room, which is quite expensive if done more often.
