What colour walls with this stair carpet?

Just had the stairs done in grey striped carpet and it looks fab but the walls now look very cream! Need to redecorate anyway, so, other than white, which I'm not keen on, what colours would go? Carpet is 3 different shades of grey plus white.

I think it would need to be white or a variation thereof plus white satinwood on the skirting and bannister

JustBeingJuliet · 26/09/2015 08:43

I'm keeping the wood as it is for now, as it's the same as every bit of skirting board, doorframe, door etc in the house, so I'm not sure if it would look silly having just one bit white?

I guess I'm going to have to go with white walls then! I really underestimated how much the carpet would make the walls look so cream!

Some shade of grey - F&B ?

SurlyCue · 26/09/2015 11:54

Yes keep all the woodwork in the house the same! Mismatched wood looks awful. I think white or a really light grey for the walls.

SurlyCue · 26/09/2015 11:55

Although i have to say i think the cream looks good and you run the risk of creating a "cold" staircase with all greys and whites.

JustBeingJuliet · 26/09/2015 12:14

Yes that's what I'm worried about! Although it is quite a dark, enclosed staircase anyway, with a tiny entrance hall (hall floor is slate grey vinyl as I didn't think walking straight in onto new carpet was the best idea!).

I've been looking on Pinterest and wondering if I could get away with a bit of colour - a very pale blue or something on the walls, then the ceiling white? Or maybe a purple/white colour? I'm really not keen on a stark white, especially since we have a dog!

A pale lilac would be nuce

JustBeingJuliet · 26/09/2015 12:18

Something like one of these maybe?

Yes i think the lilac would be lovely! Blue is another cold colour so i would avoid that.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 26/09/2015 12:29

Cool colours will be fine. But how are you differentiating the stairs from the rest of the house?

I mean, where will the hall colour end? Will it be edging on to a warm colour or does that all run the full length of the house if that makes sense - ie your not just redecorating he staircase?

I'm just wondering what the wood etc will look like once the decorating is done. Normally, I think three colours max when decorating. So you would have lilac walls, warm coloured wood and all the colours on the carpet? For me that's a bit of a mishmash of tones and colours

JustBeingJuliet · 26/09/2015 12:36

The hall is literally just a small square area; stairs are directly opposite the front door, then door straight to the left into the living room. Landing at the top is bigger and has a small window.

Living room is currently red below the dado rail and like a linen-white at the top, but whole house needs decorating tbh. Not been here long so still trying to find my feet with regards to colours etc as there's a lot of work to be done!

Maybe you just need a cooler cream with less yellow in it? What's the linen white in the living room like? Have you got any left - could you do a test patch on the wall near the stairs?

JustBeingJuliet · 26/09/2015 14:16

I've got none of the paint as it was all done by the previous owners. I might nip into b&q this afternoon and grab some testers to try out :)

I'd be wary of anything that isn't white/off white because of the orangey tone of the wood. You have a cool coloured carpet, and cool slate grey flooring, with warm toned wood. Anything blue toned will look extra blue against the orange wood. So then you have a blue and orange colour scheme with a grey scheme on the ground. Not good.

How about F&B Slipper Satin? It's a pale sand colour, the same sort of colour as the lightest stripe in your carpet.

JustBeingJuliet · 26/09/2015 16:04

Hmm I hadn't thought about having to coordinate with the wood as well! If I end up with a white of some variation, I think I'll go for a washable paint as the hall walls tend to get very grubby.

I'd go with a very very pale grey. It won't be dark enough to affect the lighting, but will match the carpet.

floppyjogger · 26/09/2015 17:02

We've got this carpet if its the humbug one and had to change the walls from cream to a very dull rose pink to warm up the hallway. It looked far too cold with blank walls unfortunately but our hallway is 19ft long so that might have made a difference.

I loved it and thought it looked great but Dh has spent the last 5 years moaning about the stripes so we have recently changed the paint back to cream and are getting our new beige and very boring carpet fitted in a couple of weeks!

I love stripes Smile

poocatcherchampion · 26/09/2015 17:05

How are you going to paint the skirting boards without getting any on the new carpet?

I'm worried for you!

JustBeingJuliet · 26/09/2015 20:18

I'm not painting the skirting boards, just the walls! All the skirting boards, door frames etc in the house are the same colour so I'm leaving it be for now :)

landrover · 26/09/2015 21:43

I would go for a grey. Pick a warmish grey and that will be fine!

JustBeingJuliet · 26/09/2015 22:37

I'm just worried that grey walls, grey and white carpet, white ceiling will look like you've just walked into a black and white movie! Grin

Wondering if grey walls but with a feature wall opposite the top of the stairs would work? Maybe something with greys and purples in or something? Just to break up the sea of grey!

Try dulux fragrant cloud 4. It's a lilacish grey?

JustBeingJuliet · 26/09/2015 23:10

I can't seem to find that?

This colour is a nice lilacy-grey shade. Not sure if it'll look a little dark though?

It's really hard to tell on phone screens it I think that's a little dark although if you have windows it might be ok.

RJnomaaaaaargh · 26/09/2015 23:19

Does this link work? Again I'm looking on phone so it might be off
