Knock separate toilet into bathroom or not?

We are renovating our bathroom soon and are undecided whether to leave the next door toilet separate or to incorporate it into the bathroom. We have one other toilet in the house if that is relevant. Has anyone done this and prefer it to being separate? There is room to fit a small basin to save having to walk to bathroom to wash hands. Really can't decide. Any advice appreciated. Obviously it will cost more to knock through/block up a doorway etc so this is a consideration. Thanks!

Keep the toilet separate and add a small basin in there.

We did this, it's brilliant! Bathroom now feels nice and spacious, made such a difference! We don't even have another loo but never regretted doing it.

I always think it looks better to have them all in one room, although I think in practical terms it is better to have the loo separate as then no one will walk in to use it when you are having a long bath!

As you have a separate loo elsewhere this shouldn't be an issue, but given as you say costs would be higher I'd be tempted to leave it as it is with the addition of a wash basin, and prepare for long uninterrupted soaks in the bath!

Add a small basin. Two useable toilets, and a bathroom without interruption. Perfect.

Keep the toilet seperate. The bathroom is where you go to get clean. The toilet is not.

Can you add a basin to the toilet and add a toilet to the bathroom without knocking through?

We have rejected houses due to dp's phobia of separate loos with no wash basin. Definitely stick in a tiny basin or knock through. If the bathroom is fairly small I'd say knock through to make it more spacious.

I had this and added a small sink to the toilet, leaving the two rooms separate. One can now use the loo while someone else is in the shower.

I defo would keep toilet separate and add a handbasin to wash hands.

Much more useful for loo queues and shower queues when you have guests stay for weekends etc.

I knocked through and never regretted it. The toilet was a dingy horrible dark hole. Knocked through I had a big bright bathroom with plenty of space, and 2 windows in it Smile

Well I much prefer the luxury of a toilet free bathroom for bathing without any bad smells!!!

We kept it separate. Worth it for uninterrupted baths!

Having a separate toilet is so useful - no hopping around needing the loo while someone's in the shower.

If you can add a basin to the toilet then that also means that dinner guests (for example) only need to go in there and not into your bathroom.

When my house was first built it had a separate loo and a previous owner had them knocked through, much to my disappointment!

Have done both. When children were babies / toddlers, had a huge bathroom that we'd created by knocking through toilet and bathroom. Great to have lots of space for drying little ones although it could get cold (if you do knock together, make sure you heat combined room well).

Now in a house with separate toilet and bathroom, plan was always to knock through but we've been here 5 years and still separate. Have grown to love it, especially as children are older and spending more time in the bathroom preening

I would actually prefer the larger bathroom. We have friends with a house which has a separate loo and no basin and it is a pita! You would probably be able to only have a weeny basin and they are difficult to use too. Plus lots more pipes for water supply and waste to retro fit a basin. Bigger bathrooms are lovely! Go for it.

For those who haven't bothered to read the initial post - the OP stated that there is another loo in the house.

I would knock the two together and make a larger bathroom. Don't most people use the loo just before showering or bathing?

Erm yeah we had 2 loos the dc still seemed to manage to do a horrid smelly poo just before I had to go for a shower...

Is it really such a big deal to go to the loo and then into the bathroom Confused

DD often hops out of the bath for a wee, so having a loo in the same room is beneficial.

We knocked through and now have a good sized bathroom, which is great for bathing the DC. I'm so glad we didn't keep it separate.

Is there any way to fit a loo in the bathroom without knocking through? A house we viewed had converted the former toilet into a shower/wetroom and put a loo in the main bathroom. I really liked that layout.

If you have young children (or may have in the future) I would definitely knock it through - so much easier for clearing up/preventing accidents at bath time!

Thanks all. I think we may knock through and use space where toilet was for a shower. Still mulling over layouts but will almost definitely knock through. Bathroom is so tiny it's ridiculous!

We're buying at the moment and sorry but a separate toilet to the main bathroom is one of my pet hates! Especially the ones that have no basin in the toilet Confused so unhygienic! Your idea of a shower room is a good one OP!
