Knock separate toilet into bathroom or not?

We are renovating our bathroom soon and are undecided whether to leave the next door toilet separate or to incorporate it into the bathroom. We have one other toilet in the house if that is relevant. Has anyone done this and prefer it to being separate? There is room to fit a small basin to save having to walk to bathroom to wash hands. Really can't decide. Any advice appreciated. Obviously it will cost more to knock through/block up a doorway etc so this is a consideration. Thanks!

Interesting the different views on this - esp the idea that it's unhygienic, but having a loo in the same room as your toothbrush, towels etc isn't.

This house has two separate loos. It's brilliant - no smells when getting ready in the morning, no queues for bathroom use. We're about to do a second bathroom which will have a loo in it. Much the worse option in my view, I can see myself going downstairs to the kids' bathroom if DH has stunk out ours in the morning.

I had this in my first home. I knocked through as there was artex on loo wall and it was soooo narrow you were in danger of serous injury! It was also cold as no radiator in there. I also nicked some unusable space from hallway and created great storage space that I planned when I had the money to have as a separate shower area when I had more money but I quite liked the storage so kept the shower over bath. I also turned the window that was behind the loo into a cabinet as I didn't need a double plus a single window. Never regretted it.

"but having a loo in the same room as your toothbrush, towels etc isn't."

You put the seat down when you flush - simple! And get your husband to use the downstairs loo in the morning.

Yes, getting other people to remember to put the lid down is, er, a piece of piss. Grin

And don't get me started on boys and their dodgy aim. I'm glad to have that contained and well away from textiles!

I like having downstairs loo for visitors and 'light' use, upstairs loo for more heavy duty stuff. Will see how we adjust to being a 3-loo family...

If bathroom is small knock through. However someone did this in our house (years ago) and the resulting bathroom is enormous, meaning we couldn't afford to re-tile the lot.

We knocked through and made it all into one room, so much better.
