£3500 for removals??

MsSampson · 25/02/2015 09:31

Just had a quote for removals and packing for £3500. 3 bed house to 3 bed house. We're not crazy hoarders, and there's nothing non- standard about the houses or our stuff. Moving about 60 miles out of london.
Quote was from pickfords and I expected it to be expensive but that has surprised me. Am getting two more local guys to quote but won't hear back until early next week. Should I prepare myself for the other quotes being similar? I had expected maybe closer to £2k tbh.

Way too much

DelGirl · 25/02/2015 13:29

Having said that, whereabouts are you as getting through central London will be a pita.

Azquilith · 25/02/2015 13:29

I just paid 1k inc VAT for 2 bed flat moving 200 miles. London prices.

LizzieMint · 25/02/2015 13:33

We just paid around £1100 for packing and removals, 4 bed house to 4 bed house about an hours drive away. I got several quotes and none were over £2k, we're in SW. Only got quotes from local removers though.

christinarossetti · 25/02/2015 13:35

We moved within London, similar sized properties, and it was half that with a local firm, including packing.

Pickfords are notoriously expensive - I wouldn't expect the local quotes to be over 2K.

Jackiebrambles · 25/02/2015 13:37

Christ on a bike!
We moved last year (3 bed flat to 4 bed house), full packing and moving (and they reassembled beds/big furniture) and we paid about £1300 I think?

That was with Harradines in SE London. I'd recommend them.

Jackiebrambles · 25/02/2015 13:37

We didn't move far, 3 miles ish so I would expect a bit of a cost for that but £1600 maybe?

Kerberos · 25/02/2015 14:48

We moved with Pickford's. £1700 from 3 to 4 bed incl packing. They were awesome.

However some friends had a quote that was significantly higher. Only reason we could see was new property was quite posh so Pickford's hiked price.

RaphaellaTheSpanishWaterDog · 25/02/2015 15:08

We paid £3600 iirc in December to move 150 miles from a four/five bed 2500 sq ft house. Not Pickfords, but a smallish local company in Wilts, although we had quotes between £3400 - £4200 from a range of removers.

That didn't include packing, but we are collectors with a lot of large furniture and a fair bit had to be export wrapped for protection.

Have previously (eight years back) paid well in excess of £4000 to Bishop's Move for a similar distance move, but from a significantly larger property.

Your quote does seem steep IMHO.

truelymadlysleepy · 25/02/2015 15:18

£1k in Wiltshire in the autumn from 4 to 5 bed house 6 miles away. Fully packed.
I'd definitely shop around

babymouse · 25/02/2015 15:38

Way to much. At first glance I thought that was a quote for moving your stuff abroad.

Poosnu · 25/02/2015 15:45

We got several quotes to move from a 4 bed house in central London to Buckinghamshire. Pickfords were the most expensive by a significant amount - about 1k more.

In the end we paid just under £2k with Diamond and they did a good job.

MsSampson · 25/02/2015 16:02

Phew! Thanks all. I did that weird high pitched nervous laugh when I opened the quote. We're in south London, zone 3, and not far from the major road that will take us to our new home. Takes us an hour and a half in a car. So the van will be longer but not that much.
I got recommendations off old threads for the other two so hopefully the power of mumsnet will get me some more reasonable quotes!

We were in SE London and did a reasonably local move - 4 bed to 5 bed last summer and paid £1800 for full packing and removal. Did have a quote from Pickfords who we originally planned to go with and they suddenly hiked their quote from £1700 to £2300 a month before our move (had that long between exchange and completion) when I was going to book them. No reason given other than the quote was done a while back (5 months previously). Hmm

Incidentally the company we went with had also quoted 5 months before but when I asked they said their price was good as nothing had changed re house contents (James Removals, they were brilliant).

Boofy27 · 25/02/2015 18:43

The inventory that Pickfords will have sent you to check, will be very handy when you're getting other quotes, do its not all bad news.

We moved from SE London to Kent a couple of years ago 3 bed to 3 bed(around 50 miles - all on main roads) and paid around £1,100, would have been another £350 for packing.

We also used James and were really really happy, so much so we used them again when we moved again 6 months later

MsSampson · 26/02/2015 14:37

Just got a quote from one of the local firms (very promptly) and it's 1750. Huge relief!

I have moved a few times within central London (with less stuff, but not by much) for about £700 using NorthStarr removals. I like them and find them very well priced.

Luckystar82 · 26/02/2015 17:15

woah!!

We are in an expensive area (not London. But some of the highest house prices in the country) We are due to move in 3 weeks time and have been quoted £300 for a large 2 bed apartment moving to a 3 bed house 1 mile away. We are packing ourselves but the company provide the boxes.

Ok, so it is not comparable to your quote but still it just helps you benchmark.

Luckystar82 · 26/02/2015 17:17

I still think £1750 is a lot of money. Friends of mine paid £1000 for moving 20 miles in said expensive part of country from 3 bed house to 4 bed mansion! This included the packing service.

Shop around.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 26/02/2015 18:13

Pickfords are very expensive. They quoted £1000 to move us (2 bed to 2 bed) in the SW, about 12 miles.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 26/02/2015 18:13

That was just moving, no packing!

PiratePanda · 26/02/2015 19:19

Pickfords just quoted us £1K for a local move from storage and a 2bed into a 3bed (less than a mile). Southeast, though not London. 3.5K is seriously expensive.

CurlsLDN · 26/02/2015 19:26

We're moving from se London to Cornwall soon, 2bed flat. I've been getting quotes this week, three separate well known firms have quoted £1400, which reading this thread I now think is v good considering it will be a two day job with the van driving 5-6 hours each way!
