An Ebola house in the Highlands or Wales ...

or possibly the north of England.

I want to buy a remote house for my family. Somewhere we could go and sit things out if Ebola takes hold in the UK.

I plan to basically furnish it and then stock the cupboards and freezer with pasta, jam. tinned food, packet foods, flour, rice, sugar, dried egg and meat in the freezer. I would also buy seeds: parsley, lettuce, rocket, spinach greens, so it would need to have at least a small amount of garden and a greenhouse would be good so we aren't

I have £100,000 to spend. I won't be using the infrastructure, so you needn't worry about schools, access to jobs and leisure facilities.

Seriously, or hypothetically?

ThatBloodyWoman · 19/10/2014 18:52

Wouldn't you need water (well/stream) ?

ShatnersBassoon · 19/10/2014 18:53

A well or fresh flowing water should be your priority.

Mumraathenoisylion · 19/10/2014 18:54

you can freeze herbs?

Smartiepants79 · 19/10/2014 18:54

Somewhere that has a solar panel or windmill thingy that makes electricity.
Definitely a well or similar.

StoorieHoose · 19/10/2014 18:55

Electric for powering your freezer?

ShatnersBassoon · 19/10/2014 18:55

ThatBloodyWoman beat me to it Smile

chibi · 19/10/2014 18:55

electricity is part of the infrastructure

your freezer may be uncooperative if it all goes up the swannee. you should make other contingency plans.hth

i can't begin to guess at your motivations for starting this thread, but you might spare a thought and some change for medecins sans frontieres who are actually doing something useful

google it.

misstiredbuthappy · 19/10/2014 18:56

Im in wales am I extra safe then :)

StoorieHoose · 19/10/2014 18:56

Think in the highlands you would need to set traps for the Ebola carrying Haggis though

Mumraathenoisylion · 19/10/2014 18:56

If you just want a little place here would be a good starting point?

Trapper · 19/10/2014 18:57

You would need to stock up on Pom bears and balsamic beads too. And get a pig so you can make your own Naice ham.

FourWallsClosing · 19/10/2014 18:57

Why would you need an Ebola house though? One just in a field or farmland would do, Ebola is rubbish at transmission if you're isolated and very unlikely to become airborne. Just get a caravan in a field with very good fencing and stock up on bottled water, tinned veg etc.

Honsandrevels · 19/10/2014 18:58

In Z for Zachariah it was a farm in Wales which escaped nuclear armageddon so that sounds like a good bet.

ShatnersBassoon · 19/10/2014 18:58

It might be easier simply to shut yourself away in your existing home, and put your zombie apocalypse plan into action.

Methe · 19/10/2014 18:59

If I won the lottery I'm do the same tbh. At the moment we are looking for a house with more storage and a decent sized garden so we can stockpile enough for a few months and grow fresh stuff for when it kicks off.. Either to get away from the war mongers or something infectious.

Scotland is probably your best bet.

AlphaBravoHenryFoxtons · 19/10/2014 18:59

An off mains water supply would be nice. As would access to fly or even coarse, fishing.

But we aren't bothered about solar panels: we are competent fire-setters and intend to supply the house with at least one winter's worth of smokeless coal, logs and kindling.

And we'll be calling in at Ikea to buy a few boxes of tea lights and candles.

What else haven't I thought of?

You'd need a wood burner or open fire. If Ebola took hold you could just sit in any old house with a pile of tins - not sure you'd need to drive to Scotland for that.

Quite fancy the idea as a back to basics retreat though.

ShatnersBassoon · 19/10/2014 19:00

Medical supplies.

Mumraathenoisylion · 19/10/2014 19:01

My house above here again for reference gives you access to your own lake for salmon and trout fishing?

BoreOfWhabylon · 19/10/2014 19:02

Weapons and ammunition to fend off the ravening hordes of looters heading out from the cities

Mumraathenoisylion · 19/10/2014 19:03

not to mention 10 further houses for your closest friends who you don't want to be too close.

AlphaBravoHenryFoxtons · 19/10/2014 19:03

What Farrow & Ball colour do you think I should paint the front door of Ebola Cottage?

AlphaBravoHenryFoxtons · 19/10/2014 19:04

I quite like the look of the Ardnamurchan Peninsula.

What was the mark they painted on the door in the Old Testamant to stop the plague coming to their house? Y'know, the one with Moses.
