my house is humming!

Really driving me insane..at night there is a constant hum, as if the heating pump is on, i have been all over the house turning things off at the mains but it makes no difference, its really irritating! Any ideas? The only thing i can think of is the built in fridge but the noise doesn't seem any louder in the kitchen. Really annoying!

A light bulb? Or a plug. One of my plug sockets "hums". It's very annoying.

The light at the top of the stairs has a high pitched hum.

Tis very annoying. Seeing as though you specifically mention at night that would be a sensible possibility.

turn off the power at the main switch on the consumer unit. Does it stop?

Next turn off the water supply to the house at the external stopcock where the front gate used to be, or in the pavement.

UPVC windows? Mine hum. I googled and found loads of other people with the same problem. I need to get out more.

our church has a sound like the low pitched hum of an organ near the side door but only when the central heating is on.

old timers with a rotating dial have a motor in them.

Have you turned the electricity off yet?

Hi all well thanks for your messages, yes I turned the electrics off at the mains and could still hear it! It's like a deep low hum, it almost feels as if it's in the walls, maybe as if a freezer is running, or a car is idling outside. I haven't tried turning the water off yet. I haven't been very well this week and someone suggested it might be my sinuses but it definitely feels more like the house and not me! I don't notice it in the day because of all the other daytime noises, only at night and early in the morning when it's super quiet. I live in a village and there is very little traffic. No UPVC windows either!

can anyone else in your house hear it?

we had noise in our house and turned out to be the sensors for the alarm system.

Sorry to suggest this, but it could be tinnitus. What you are saying is exactly what one of my friends describes - a hum or a sound like a car idling in the distance. She only notices it in the evening when things are quiet around her. Can other people hear the hum?

When were in bed we can hear our fridge freezer terribly loudly. Yet when were down stairs and in kitchen it doesn't seem so bad.

My ex had this once. He lived in a downstairs flat and it turns out the flat above was full of bees and they had gotten into the floorboards, the electric conduits and even in some walls. But he never saw one inside the flat until he opened up the conduit stuff as he thought it was an electrical buzzing.

I was going to suggest next door? Ours sets their washing machine to run during the night and we can also hear their fridge freezer humming.

Mind you, I am one of the 2% who can hear the Bristol hum.

watching the thread as I hear a strage hum AND vibration in the building in the middle of the night which wakes me up at times, it doesn't go on for long. I'm not on the ground floor so it seems like it's coming all the way from the ground. I know there was an old electric station nearby but was supposed to be closed - could it be that? and maybe Op has an active station nearby?

I mean it's strong ebough to go through the floor below and still be heard. It's definitely not to do with the flat below btw.

I had this - it turned out to be my electric toothbrush charger plugged in at the mains. It is so noisy!

Another time it turned out to be a hex bug. That was annoying.

Its nothing electrical in my house as i hear it even with the power turned off. No substation nearby. On a quiet road surrounded by trees. Doesn't sound like water running or insects, its a really deep thrumming sound. I put a meditation app on last night to help me sleep, it worked but i could still hear the hum!

Do you have a busy road near you, we have the M74 about 3 miles away and still hear the low rumbling/humming noise from it, especially during the night when all else is quiet!!
