Really driving me insane..at night there is a constant hum, as if the heating pump is on, i have been all over the house turning things off at the mains but it makes no difference, its really irritating! Any ideas? The only thing i can think of is the built in fridge but the noise doesn't seem any louder in the kitchen. Really annoying!

Sorry beaglesaresweet only just got on tonight Smile

Bristol is one of the places that are well known for having a "hum" - it's certainly something I seemed to hear all the time when I lived close to the centre of the city. Apparently 2% of the population are meant to be able to hear it - I thought everyone could. It was meant to be something to do with either covered waterways, traffic vibrating through the tunnels/wine cellars in the city, the fact the city is in a valley or all of the above added together.

I didn't read the Huff Post explanation - just something I'd always known about.

teenyweeny is this only in bed? Sometimes if you lie a certain way you can actually hear blood flowing ie lying on your side. Now, this may be one of those things that parents tell you that isn't true...

Do you live near a farm?

Or near high tension power cables?

oldsilver, there is no explanation there, juts an annouying LOUD hum Grin
Maybe in city centre many cities have a hum from all sorts of sources but mainly traffic. But if you were on a hill in cities like Bath and Bristol, I bet yo ucouldn't hear.

In my case I still suspect it's something to do with old electric station nearby (?).

Hi all thanks, i can still hear it, think i may just have to learn to live with it. In a detatched house so not that, no main road nearby, no power lines, no train lines, and i can still hear it if i walk around. I can hear it in daytime but it only bothers me at night when there is no other noise. The closest thing i can think of is that its like being on a ferry, that deep vibration of the engines.
