Pull down wall bed

Would really like to have an extra guest bed in the Playroom of my new house but still have floor space the majority of the time.

Does anyone have an integrated pull down wall bed thingy? I think I would much prefer this to a sofa bed as my understanding is they take a proper mattress and are standard sizes.

I've found a couple of Internet companies that sell them but none of the websites provide much detail or prices.

Has anyone got one? What do you think of it?

In the US, a pull-down wall bed is called a "Murphy bed", and this link is to an article about someone who combined a Murphy bed with Ikea cabinets.

I'm in Canada, and therefore not much use for UK suppliers. Try googling for wall beds, pull-down beds, Murphy beds, etc.

Thanks canadianjohn I didn't realise they were called Murphy beds in North America.

I was hoping to find a UK company someone could recommend as I have seem some google hits. I don't think they are very popular in the UK as I've never seen one and only got the idea from seeing it on Sarah Beeny's 'Double Your Home' show!

My DS2 wanted one of these, so I did some research. I soon discovered those sites don't give prices because these beds are hugely expensive - at least twice the price of a decent sofa bed and about 4 times the price of a normal one! If anyone finds a wall bed around the £400-500 mark, please let me know!

We have fitted wardrobes by Spacemaker (very pleased with them) & 2 different types of pull down bed are options with bedrooms or home offices. Something I'm going to look at when we get our study/spare bedroom done.

swing away was the other type, think this was the cheaper option.

This is what I feared flow4. I don't mind paying more than a decent sofa bed costs but 4 x the price is steep.

chewbecca the space savers look good. I don't want anything cheap and nasty looking or too bedroomy for a playroom. I'll check them out when I'm next in SE.

I think CanadianJohn's link to Ikeahackers might be the way to go. It seems easy enough to buy the bed mechanism but hard to get nice looking integrated affair.

We are both good at DIY but could also look at what a carpenter would charge I guess.

I'd ask a local joiner to make it.

Do be warned though - You need to be careful that you fully air the bed before you put it away after use.

You can get them in Germany - we used to sell them when I worked over there, but presume they are as expensive as the US ones.

I have one of these wall beds, mine is a "horizontal" one that folds out from the side as opposed to from the headboard end. There wasn't enough room to fit the vertically folding out one so we settled on the horizontal one. We bought from www.wallbedking.co.uk as they are by far the cheapest and got it installed by them.

I would definately go for a wall bed instead of a sofa bed as wall beds have a proper mattress rather than those thin mattresses that sofa beds have.

In my case I already had a spare tempur mattress so these guys fixed the frame to my wall, built the cabinet and put my mattress on it. Another tip if you order from this site use the discount "shippingfree" to get free delivery!

Lamco in Poole Dorset have supplied these for clients before - if you are anywhere near the south coast ?! Really useful as frees up so much space for dual purpose rooms !!!

I had plans to get one of these but the rest of my plans changed so dramatically there's no longer the opportunity - but I did a lot of thinking.

Firstly - not all sofa beds have a thin uncomfortable mattress. Sofa beds by Willow and Hall for example are designed with much more space for a mattress so it can be properly sprung not just an inch of foam, and you can choose whether to have 12cm thick memory foam or 14cm open sprung or pockets sprung mattress.

If you stick with the wall bed plan the thing that was bugging me was the huge amount of wasted wall space so I was keen on one of these available in single for £1680 or double for £1920 plus another £390 for a shelving unit on top.

P.s. I also found this option to hang the bed from the ceiling instead - website is french though.

My pils have one of these in the dining room and it's great - means the whole family can sleep in proper beds when we all go for the weekend. They bought the mechanism online and a local carpenter fitted it for them. They've put it in the middle of the wall, flanked by real bookshelves and cupboards.

It's a proper king size mattress so much more comfy than most sofa beds and mean they can have a nice dainty sofa in the living room. I think is only worth doing if you know you want it there for as long as you live in your property - wouldn't want to rip it out in a few years for a room reshuffle!

I have one :) in the computer room in case guests visit. i'm currently in Canada and picked it up on the Costco website. I did have to have reinforcement put in the wall to handle the weight. it's a queen size. it's been used half a dozen times and everyone loves it!!! definitely more comfortable than a sofa bed.

PastaBeeandCheese - hi, just found this thread & realize it's an old one, but wonderfing if you are still after a pull down wall bed. I have a lovely one in my flat in London (Battersea) which I would like to sell. It came from the London Wall Bed Company a number of years ago, however, it is still working fine and is very comfortable. I had it in a room which at times was a dining room, an office or a spare bedroom. There is plenty of storage - glass cabinet (with light), drawers, corner wardrobe, double pull down bed with lights above & sideboard with pull out tray, it cost me several thousand pounds but was worth every penny. Now I need to clear it due to letting the flat and needing it to be a full time bedroom. Happy to accept something in region of £300-500 if purchaser dismantles and collects. I would think that OP has either bought one in the past 5 years or no longer needs one.

Perhaps try eBay or Gumtree for selling.

Yes I expect she has already sorted one but since this thread came up when I was searching for ‘wallbed’ I thought it worth checking. Yes will prob put on Gumtree. Thx for the suggestion.
